Zora Hestia Roh
Character Birthday & Age: 41; February 1, 1966
City & Country of Birth: Leeds, England
Pureblood, Halfblood or Muggleborn?: Halfblood
Alma Mater: Slytherin, Hogwarts
Job: Auror
Wand: 9 inches, dragon heartstring, birch, very pointy
Physical Description: Zora is punchy and seasoned. She's not the youngest Auror on the team, but she's got some of the highest energy. Even standing still she seems to be coiled and ready to act. Her face is very expressive and vibrant. Her Korean-ancestry features accentuate her scowls, smiles and battle shouts. Her long black hair is a wild mane.
She's flat-chested and hippy. Sinewy and not soft. She rarely adorns herself with make-up or even basic charms, although she wears dark glasses often. She's 5'7'' and 140. Dark brown eyes and nearly black hair. Rough hands and rough elbows.
Personality Description:Roh's got endless energy, and nearly limitless patience. And that's the real challenge of the Auror Corp - knowing when to hold back. When to follow the rules. And when to slide past. Zora would prefer to be independent in her job, and occasionally riots at being over-supervised or second guessed. She prefers to leave the politics and running of the department to the brass, only recently aspiring to more than control of her own investigations.
She takes her assignments and pursues them aggressively. She prefers to work with other Aurors when at all possible, loving the camaraderie with both the witches and wizards in the Corps.
She's got quite a few commendations on her records, compared to far fewer written warnings and reprimands, all of which are related to not waiting for back up, or escalating a situation too quickly. She's better at 'by the book' now than she was, but that temper is still there, that drive to act.
Roh's politics are complex. Before her wife was attacked and turned into a werewolf, Zora was the sort to be annoyed by sympathy towards some of the magically downtrodden. She tried to ignore the hard truth that marginalized groups are unfairly afflicted by common magical law, and just relied on the Wizengamot to mete out justice. But things change.
Zora keeps work and life separate when she can, both for safety but also she's just used to holding her own close. She works too many hours, but tries to save all of her best fun when she's home, keeping shop talk to a minimum.
History:Zora was born in 1966 in Leeds to a wizard and a muggleborn witch, both community Healers. The Rohs, that is, Zora her older brother Oliver and their parents, weren't a flashy family and just enjoyed a rather boring life in the north until all that garbage with Lord Voldemort started to get very bad when Zora was about 8. The family moved out of the city and into the country with a small group of magical families. And as soon as Zora was old enough, she attended Hogwarts with her brother - as it was the safest place in Britain.
Zora was in Slytherin and was highly influenced by the heroics of her older classmates. She was in awe of their bravery and self-sacrifice. And although she didn't learn the whole story until it was all made public years and years later, the first Order of the Phoenix inspired her and shaped her.
It was also in those last few years at Hogwarts in the eighties that she realized she was gay. She stayed closeted from her family for many years, until she was much older and in a permanent relationship with Iona Ballentyne.
After Hogwarts, Zora moved back in with her parents who were very busy with their Healing practice. She loved her parents, but she felt bored and unfulfilled. The only direction she'd had in Hogwarts was forged with the pressures of those dangerous times, that when it all ended she found herself wondering ... now what? So when she was 21, she moved to London and took odd jobs. Things were not much better in London than in Leeds, but at least she was able to freely pursue relationships with other witches. And when she did, she found Iona Ballentyne, a witch with fantastic eyes and a biting wit. They fell in love and committed to each other in 1990.
Iona and Zora were good for each other. It was Iona who convinced Zora that it wasn't too late to become an Auror. Zora's marks were good enough, so she entered the training program in 1992. For better or for worse, that was when things were starting to heat up. By the time her training had ended, the rumors of Voldemort's return were confirmed and all hell broke loose. Zora felt alive and she was hardened by the crucible of confusion and danger. It must speak to the nature of these two witches that they'd choose the year 1995 to adopt an infant daughter, but they did, little Waverley.
Zora's seen action during those last days of the War (although she was not at the Battle of Hogwarts), and she fought at the Azkaban Prison Break of 2004. Since then she's seen a great deal. Most recently the Remembering Day Murders and the strange murder of Gawain Robards. She's risen through the ranks and is now considered one of the more capable lead investigators and known to be an accomplished duelist.
What is your job description? How do you go about your job? How did you get your current job? How does your past and abilities justify your current position?:Roh sees her job as almost a kind of knight, a soldier for good. She believes in the order the Ministry of Magic creates, and that her role of bringing about peace is the use of magical force. She thrives in the chain of command, except when it asks her to be still. A large part of her job is investigation, but she's also responsible for arrests, searches and questioning. She responds to emergencies and patrols the streets regularly, both in teams and alone.
She's been with the Aurors since 1995, but has not achieve a rank yet of Senior Auror. She's only recently aspired to it, having been worried a promotion would chafe with all the extra paperwork. But her experience has shown her a bigger picture and her place in it.
Sum up your character in one paragraph:Zora loves her job. She's punchy, aggressive and a true believer. She's physically and mentally tough and a great wand to have at your back. She can get caught up in the heat of the moment and sometimes forgets that things are always more complex than they appear.
