Occupation The Arts
- Lothario is co-owner of the London Gallery of Magical Arts. He is director of the Contemporary Art wing. His business partner specializes in classic magical arts. Lothario organizes art showings of up and coming artists. Lothario also organizes fashion shows, readings, and other various events in the live performance area of the gallery. The gallery is privately owned, and as such is a commercial organization. He and his business partner both make money off of the endeavor.
Type of Criminal: Dark Artist / Black Market
Allegiances / Loyalties / Political Faction: First and foremost, his loyalties and allegiances lie with himself and his family. After that are "business" partners of a nefarious nature, and then business partners of an innocent nature. He is also a purist.
Previous Convictions or Crimes?:
Convictions: Before relocating to London, Lothario was convicted of having possession of stolen goods. He was just getting started in the criminal world at the time. Afterward, he had a hard time finding any dishonest work in either Italy or France. As such, he is likely on the radar of the British authorities.
Crimes: Lothario is often in possession of illegal or stolen items- mostly artifacts, paintings, etc. He buys them from others, or occasionally hires people to steal them for him. Lothario also sells dark/illegal/stolen items. He considers his specialty to be in rare or dark pieces of art. Mostly he is a middle man. People who are far more important and embedded in the world of crime use him, and he in turn uses petty criminals to get the jobs done. (Mostly he has money and he knows where to find things. He also has no problems in funding various midnight capers if he thinks it will benefit him in the end.)
What crimes might you commit in the future? Discuss all possible: More than likely, Lothario will continue his current dealings. Embezzling money from his business, and being involved in the illegal trade of dark, cursed, stolen, or otherwise illegal items. Naturally he will also be in the possession of them. Lothario will also probably fund organizations that are illegal or thought to be unsavory if he agrees with their platform, or if they make him do it. Aiding other criminals will also likely happen.
Are you currently under pursuit by the Ministry of Magic?: He is not a fugitive, but they probably keep an eye on him. Although he was convicted a very long time ago and has had a squeaky clean record ever since.
Wand Description: His wand is 13 7/8 inches long, made of yew with a runespoor fang core. It is brittle and has an elaborately decorated shaft.
Physical Description:
Build/Body type: Lothario has a very thick build. He is tall, and wide. He tries to give off the impression of having lots of muscle, but mostly he is a man who was once in great shape who has begun to neglect his body. He is squishy in places where he used to be firm, and as he continues to age this will likely only increase.
Estimated Height/Weight: 6'0" / 230lbs
Hair color: Lothario has very dark brown, almost black hair. It comes down to his shoulders, and is worn in a pony tail on most occasions. In the privacy of his own home is generally the only time a person will see him with his hair flowing.
Eye color: His eyes are a very flat shade of dark blue. Most often they are described as cold and distant.
Skin color: Lothario has a somewhat light skin tone. He does not generally spend prolonged periods out in the sun, although he does frequent beaches for other reasons. He tans easily if he spends too much time out, and he doesn't like the look of being too tan.
First Impression: Depending upon the circumstances of meeting Lothario, he is one of two people. Publicly, among clients and those he socializes with he seems to be a very charming, very wealthy man with nothing questionable about him- apart from his overwhelming interest in the arts. If a person meets Lothario via nefarious activities, he is very no nonsense and tries to seem like the sort of person one would never want to cross.
Any odd/outstanding features?: His nose is very large. Other than that he looks fairly normal by most standards.
Personality Description: Lothario is like most pureblooded wizards that come from wealth and a spotty family history. He is arrogant, puts emphasis on blood and on wealth, and can be very two faced. When dealing with the people related to his job, he comes off as being a charming, witty man. When he is dealing with his criminal associates, he tries to show that he is powerful and dangerous. (Though most seem to know that he is all smoke and mirrors.) He enjoys being the center of attention and socializing. Lothario rarely spends a night at home, and is constantly on the look out for people it would be beneficial to network with. He tends to have his fingers in a lot of different lucrative pies, both legal and illegal ones. The kickbacks from them are worth it, along with the notoriety it brings to his name.
Money and things that money can buy are important to Lothario d'Aubigne. He loves having the chance to show off his wealth, and is always attending parties and charities events and hosting events of his own to impress others. Lothario enjoys spending his money on himself, and on others. If he is dating someone, he showers them with presents. Whenever he goes anywhere with colleagues, business partners, or his friends he always picks up the tab. Lothario loves it when others compliment the things that he has, or when they seem jealous at his ability to spend money like it will never run out.
Lothario tends to be a very close minded and prejudiced man. He believes that everyone has their place in the world (namely, beneath him) and is often accused of being sexist. He is a purist, but not to the degree of some. He realizes in order to maintain a proper social reputation that he cannot refuse to do business with or be seen with those of lesser birth. Naturally he tolerates halfbloods better than muggleborns, but does his best to keep his disdain for both under wraps unless he is in the proper company. Lothario seems to be very intolerant of anyone different from himself, or of any lifestyle he does not understand or agree with.
He is extremely self conscious about his lack of proper magical skill. As he has gotten older he has realized that not only is it a great inconvenience to be incapable of simple charms work and transfiguration, but it is very difficult to hide this fact. Lothario can get very angry and belligerent when people point out this weakness or tease him for it. Often times if a circumstance arises where it might be found out that he is underqualified as far as most wizards go, he excuses himself in order to prevent being found out.
History: Lothario was born to Gérard d’Aubigne and Rosalia Mattioni. The d'Aubigne family is a very prestigious French pureblood family, with connections to a vast majority of other equally influential and prominent names in pureblood societies all over Europe. When Gérard took a wife, he extended this influence into one of the most prominent Italian pureblood families. After marrying Rosalia, he relocated to Italy so that she could be with her family.
Lothario was the third born in the family, following two sisters. His father was overjoyed when his wife finally produced a male heir, and he was immediately treated like a little prince. Rosalia allowed her husband to be in control of her son's education and his upbringing, as she had her hands full with two little girls. Lothario and his father were inseparable, and Gérard surprised his entire family by falling into the role of being a very good and very attentive father to the little boy. (He had been mostly indifferent to his daughters.) Lothario's sisters were extremely jealous, and because of this the three never seemed to get along while they were growing up.
The d'Aubigne family was one that specialized in antiques. Lothario, for the most part, found it all very boring when he was being forced to learn about it growing up. He never seemed to find any interest in any of it until his father began trying to teach him about art. Lothario had an eye for art, and after being allowed to take lessons, it was discovered that he had a talent for it as well. Gérard was pleased by this, and began hiring various artistic tutors for his son, almost completely neglecting any other educations before his son would be sent to Beauxbatons to learn magic.
In school, Lothario was not very attentive. Having been pampered his entire life and led to believe that he was the best and deserved everything handed to him on a silver platter really affected his view of the world. Many classes he barely passed, and for the most part he did not care. His mother and father would often chide him for it, but no punishment was ever given to him. Lothario was, after all, their perfect little angel and would always remain as such.
After his fourth year of schooling, Lothario's father grew tired of all the correspondence with the school in reference to his son. Lothario was constantly accused of getting into trouble, of cheating, and of not performing well. His father decided that obviously they were not doing their jobs correctly and pulled Lothario out of Beauxbatons to further his own education at home. This would prove to have a very interesting effect on his magical education. Gérard and Rosalia both came from families with less than innocent histories and extreme interests in the dark arts. Gérard had a particular interest in it, as he often encountered cursed items in his line of work with magical antiques. (And often times he was cursing them and giving them as gifts to those he didn't like.)
Because of this, when Gérard took his son's education into his own hands, it seemed that Lothario never would learn any practical applications of magic. He would learn all about art and antiques, and then his father taught him branches of magic that were rather dark in their origins. By the time his father ceased tutoring him, Lothario could theoretically kill, hurt, curse, or hex a person a multitude of different ways, but had not yet mastered simple transfiguration. Lothario would not realize until much later in his life how inconvenient his lack of normal magical knowledge could be.
Gérard began to immerse Lothario in the world through which he did business. Most of Gérard's transactions were rather illegal ones. Lothario, who was not particularly good in business, never would really catch on. After moving into his own home (one owned by the family near the Italian coast) he would start trying to get his own endeavors going in the shady world he had been exposed to. Having not learned enough to really cover his tracks, and always being treated as though he could do no wrong, it wasn't long before he made some serious mistakes in his dealings. Lothario, at the age of twenty-two, became the victim of an intense investigation surrounding a set of invaluable French paintings which had gone missing.
Eventually the paintings would be discovered in his possession. There was no proof that Lothario had stolen them, or that he had any intent to distribute them. He would be convicted for possession of stolen goods and afterward no one wanted to do business with him anymore. Lothario grew incredibly bored without anything to do, and his father soon discovered that having his son around also affected his own ability to do business with even long time clients.
When he was twenty-four, Gérard shipped Lothario off to live in London. He had acquired partial ownership of an art gallery in Diagon Alley for his son, hoping that the project would be enough to distract and sustain him while he got his own affairs with the criminal underworlds of Italy and France back in order. Gérard was more than correct. Lothario took to the job, and was rather good at it. He began scouting out talent for the contemporary art wing, and putting on great art shows that were extremely successful. He and his business partner began turning a rather large profit through Lothario's ability to spot good talent and book good talents in the performance space of the art gallery.
For first few years, Lothario was content with this. Then some old friends from Italy got in contact with him in London, and Lothario rather quickly found himself back in touch with the black market. He found it very difficult at first, even now he was in another country, to gain the trust of anyone. He had learned his lesson, though. Lothario discovered he worked best as a middle man. Middle men, he thought, had it easy. He did not have the big problems as any large name in the world, or the petty problems of the people enlisted to actually do the dirty work. Lothario took cuts from the money, and the cuts were enough to make him happy.
Over the next ten years, Lothario would come to be known by both sides of the magical world. He became well known in the art community for his ability to find talent, and for his generous funding of various charities and shows. In the crime world, he soon knew what was going on (more or less) in most areas of his expertise and a few others that intersected with it. He found himself increasing his personal wealth in both areas. Lothario had connections with the important people, and he thrived off of it. (Even though, in reality, those important connections could care less about him if he wasn't of use to them in some way or another.) He felt as though he finally truly belonged. (He did, however, have a hard time of a lot of it due to lack of normal magical skills.)
Sum up your character in one paragraph: Lothario is a firm believer in the ideas that money makes the world go round. He has the very best of everything and shows it off. He is not a low-key person in any way. Lothario is always attending grand parties, invited to special events, and is always spending too much money on things he finds aesthetically pleasing. He is a very two faced person. Those he likes and enjoys see his calm, well mannered side. Those he dislikes or deems unworthy get to see the nasty of side of Lothario d'Aubigne. Lothario has no feelings of guilt or remorse about the illegal activities in his life.
