[October 12] High Society (Zoey, Open)

on January 29, 2010, 09:50:48 AM

Maeve Whitman sat curled up in one of the arm chairs in the Slytherin common room, her eyes passing over the contents of some text, although unlike some of her more studious classmates, the text did not belong to a book for any class at Hogwart's. No, Maeve Whitman was doing some studying of a different nature on this particular Sunday afternoon and it included the entertainment section of the Daily Prophet. It tended to be a source of information about all that was going on in society and Maeve used it to keep tabs on some of her family members. Whether it was the Whitmans or the Grummans, it was one thing that they knew how to do well was stay in the news.

Today, Maeve was staring at a photo of her cousin, Melanthe, who had been spotted out on the town canoodling with some of her other socialite friends. There was an accompanying long, boring article about how she was planning to host a charity event in the near future. Maeve didn't get very far in reading it because she felt her gag reflex start to kick in.

Even if Melanthe did host said charity event, Maeve was certain that it would serve the cause less and her cousin's purposes more. There were always hidden motives in what her cousin did.

I should know all about that, Maeve inwardly scoffed with an annoyed flip of her blonde hair. Chances were high that Melanthe would only be inviting the creme de la creme to this event and while they were likely going to be sharing their considerable wealth, chances were high that the event would be a perfect opportunity for members of powerful pureblood families to look like they were doing something beneficial for the wizarding community whilst actually getting the chance to plot against those who didn't share their views of the world (such as mudbloods and half breeds).

Maeve sighed heavily as she let the paper fall into her lap as her thoughts seemed to wander from her cousin's future social event to the one that was to be held at the school not too far off. It seemed a given that she and Zoey would be attending together, but there was always his blood purity that was the proverbial elephant in the room.

Zoey was a prefect. He was destined to be a great wizard who would have oodles of acclaim once he left Hogwart's. So why was it hard for her to accept that he was less than pure? Times they were a-changin' so why couldn't she?

Her eyes cut to the article in the paper again and she instantly was reminded of why. Part of it was to prove that she belonged in that group. She was a purist. But it was harder for Maeve to completely dismiss them all, especially Zoey. And yet, to not do so left her open for hypocrisy.

She realized that it would just be easier to give in. But she was stubborn. Pursing her lips, she picked up the paper again and resumed reading another article until she heard someone else enter the common room.

Speak of the devil, she mused with a smirk.

She smiled at Zoey as he approached and said, "Hey hon. What are you up to today?"

Early morning on a Sunday, it was generally when Zoey was in the library, still in his pajamas, studying something. And, of course, he was doing just that. It happened to be old wizarding politicians this morning, and even though he was not taking History of Magic, or even needed the information, he always felt the need to be studying something, and it was the first book he grabbed, so it worked.

Around noon, he got bored with it and by that time he knew politics were not the career choice for him. As he got up, he placed the book back in it's spot, and passed maybe two people on his way out, though they were fully dressed compared to his lime green flannel and frog-faced slippers. He was used to getting odd looks, so he just let it slide as he went back to the dungeons.

Walking in to the common room, he saw a buxom blonde reading on the sofa. He thought to himself, Well there's something you don't see everyday. Before he could see who it was, she turned around and he saw his favorite Slytherin girl staring at him. Maeve Whitman, his long time friend, who he was going to ask to the Halloween ball. He wasn't sure what her response would be, but it never hurt to ask. If she said no, he'd take a mannequin instead.

"Hey hon. What are you up to today?"

A good sign. He smiled at her, and hoped she'd think his pajamas were cute. "Oh, just the usual. Studying something in the library that has no meaning in my life whatsoever. How has your morning been, beautiful?" He said, as he hopped onto the sofa with her.

Maeve couldn't help but chuckle at Zoey's pajama choice. But it was very fitting of him and she didn't know why she was so surprised. If it had been anyone else, Maeve likely would've made fun of the person and would have had no scrupals about being mean about it either. But seeing as it wasn't just anyone and also seeing as there were no other students in the common room just as yet, she could keep any biting comments to herself.

When he mentioned that he had been studying but that it had no meaning, she scoffed lightly, "Oh really? Since when has Zoey McAdams studied anything that has no meaning? You're going to be world famous some day, isn't that right?"

Everyone seemed to have a plan for what they wanted to do except for Maeve, something her father lamentably nagged her about all the time. He even had the nerve to use Melanthe as a barometer of success at times. Her cousin may have had everyone else fooled with her sweet, socialite act, but it didn't fly with Maeve.

With a sigh, she tossed the Daily Prophet to the end table and pouted a bit. "Nothing except for my family, as always. If it isn't one side trying to ruin the name by who they marry it's the other being spotted all over the place for social purposes."

In the silence that followed, Maeve realized that the former part of her statement may have been grossly insensative where Zoey was concerned, given his blood purity and their connection. She sheepishly smiled at him and murmured, "Sorry."
