SAWS letters to the Daily Prophet

on January 26, 2010, 09:36:54 PM

A large tawny owl carries a thick bundle of scrolls into the Daily Prophet offices one early morning in the beginning of October. The owl drops off the bundle on the nearest reporter's desk, and then pecks at the reporter's fingers in hopes of getting a treat for his efforts.

This particular letter is written on standard Hogwarts parchment, in black ink, with a neat though somewhat unsteady hand.

  • To whom it may concern:

I’m writing to let you know that I (and other students) disagree with Headmistress Snark’s decision to expel Olivia Foley for being a werewolf.

I’ve known Ollie for years. She’s my best friend, and she’s always kept up a cheerful face in spite of anything bad that has happened to her. In a way, her history and being a werewolf has made her a very strong, admirable person. She would never do anything to hurt anyone. See, I know her as a person, and that’s the thing that Tulojow Nagde explained so well in her September 25 editorial. She is a human being with a disease, and she deserves to be treated like any other witch or wizard. She deserves an education- a public one, at Hogwarts. She is not dangerous, as long as precautions are taken while she’s at school. We know when the full moon is each month, so we can prepare for it. It takes planning, but that planning is worth it if she gets to attend Hogwarts like everyone else.

Some might criticize former Headmaster Greyfriar for keeping her condition private, but I don’t believe it was irresponsible at all. I think it was to protect her identity, so she could live like a normal student, without worrying about the prejudices she’s facing now that her name is out there. Mr. Greyfriar had a system in place to keep Ollie and the students safe, with staff who knew about her condition so there was a chain of command of people who knew how to help. She had regular check-ups at St. Mungo’s. She had the potions master, Nicodemus Gunnar, who knows how to make wolfsbane. She went home every full moon on the train. There was a safe system in place, and it worked. So why not continue it, or modify it to make it even more secure, and allow her to continue going to Hogwarts?

With Headmistress Snark's attention to detail and concern for her students, I think she is more than capable of putting a system into place, like Headmaster Greyfriar did, so that Ollie could safely stay at Hogwarts like she did all those years before.

I know that she can still get an education, and be taught at home, or perhaps be taught at another, more accepting, school. But it's not the same thing. Hogwarts is where all her friends are. Hogwarts should be a second home to any witch of wizard. There are programs for students who can't pay for their education, but there aren’t the same types of options for students with diseases like lycanthropy. Werewolf students should be able to get the same schooling that other students do, just like adult werewolves should be able to get the same jobs that other adults do. Steps are being made in the wizarding world with Ms. Gertrudis' programs, but what about the schools?

If werewolves aren’t accepted and taught at school, how can they expect to be accepted in the ‘real’ world? And how can others learn from them and understand them if they can't even be in the same classroom with them?

It’s not too late to make changes and allow Ollie to have a place at Hogwarts. If the school administration has a safe system for these students, there’s no reason besides prejudice to expel her for being a werewolf.

    Sincerely,

This letter is written on coffee stained parchment with very disturbing and scratchy handwriting. There's many words scratched out violently, but it still remains legible.

To whomever may be reading this:

My name is Trent Travis and I am a seventh year Slytherin student at Hogwarts. Now I'm not the type of guy to really write this type of bullocks trash stuff, so I'll try to make this quick.

In all my years of school (Well, since my third year) basically the only girl to make me happy is Olivia Foley. So imagine my complete shock when I came to school this year, my very last year, and learn that she has been expelled by Analiza Snark for being a werewolf. Now, I knew about her being a werewolf, of course. I ain't completely stupid, though my grades would probably tell you otherwise. But being expelled for being a Werewolf... Is disgustingly wrong.

Now I don't know all those fancy shmancy facts and figures and all that bullocks buttocks dung ridiculous nonsense that the others may be writing. This is all from my own personal being, and not anyone else's. No one knows how I feel and how much I can't trust Snark. And don't call me overdramatic, I might just stalk you down and hex you if you do.

Ollie Foley was the most... Spirited girl I knew. A bit promiscuous at some points, but why the hell would I mind? She had such a bright future ahead of her and that was all ruined. She wasn't dangerous, she wasn't going to go on a rampage and kill us all. Though that's another thing I wouldn't mind. Ollie deserved better than to just be thrown out of the school. All of our respectable Headmasters in the past (Emphasize respectable) would allow werewolves in the school. It's really not a big deal. Well, it shouldn't be at least.

Imagine if us Wizards were opened up to the Muggle public. We all know they wouldn't be so sweet to us, right? They'd probably reject us from society, kick us out of where they live, they'd be afraid... They'd be shocked and disgusted and they'll call us devils and monsters. There'd be these groups forming around the world, saying "Wizards are people too!" and there'll be muggles marrying Wizards left and right because it's just not right to segregate. And people like Snark will say "No" to those people. They'll say "Wizards don't deserve the same lives we do, we are power-hungry bastards leeches who cannot share a world with someone different. Or more strong. Or anything we fear". Are you catching what I'm saying here? In what way is Werewolf segregation different from that example? It's not. It's exactly the same.

I understand that no matter where we are there'll be hate, and there'll be segregation. But there's nothing wrong with being a controlled werewolf. And there's nothing wrong with being a Wizard. And more importantly, to myself, there's nothing wrong with not being an incest freak and coming from muggle parents.

I've been hated and teased all my life. And it's not fair to these poor people that they have to be, also. I know how it feels. Does Snark? Does any of those rich, snobby, disgusting, idiotic, lousy, dream-killing, soul-crushing purebloods know what it's like to be different? Have they ever been excluded from their precious, luxurious lives? Have they ever been hated by their family for being different, for being unplanned and unwanted?

The answer would be 'No'. Because they aren't different. They may be complainy and think their life is so hard for not having a new pair of shoes or getting a new goddamn pony, but it's not. And sure, they may have messed up and pissed off a few members of their family, got kicked out and scorned. But that wasn't because they were different. They've never been kicked out of society. They've never been publicly despised.

In my opinion, segregation should simply be outlawed. Because it starts too much shit nonsense and distracts people from bigger problems.

This is all ridiculous.

I'm done now,

To The Dailey Prophet and its readers:

I'm not the most studious, outspoken, or motivated individual on the planet.  I know this all too well, but when it comes time to make a stand when it matters: I'm there.  That's why I'm writing this letter today, because I've found a reason worth writing about.

I must confess that I barely knew Ms.Ollie Foley, but facts are facts.  This is an individual who has been talked about as controlled, peaceful, and kind.  She had undertaken extensive measures to ensure the safety of Hogwarts' students and staff members.  There must be a certain amount of self denial and self restraint upon anyone with a similar affliction such as lycanthropy.  Ms.Foley displayed such commited values.

The question must be centered on one word: why?  Why should someone with a problem not be allowed to seek help?  Hogwarts can and should be helping any young witch or wizard who wishes to be helped and yearns for a peaceful life.  If we are to say that lycanthropy poses a threat of danger, then we must expel any and all wizards and witches from Hogwarts as well, because each and every one of us have powers that are quite definitely potential hazards.  We all know what happens when someone abuses dangerous power, but in this case where is the abuse of power coming from?  Is it the werewolf girl striving to do what's right and keep everyone around her safe and healthy?  Or is it the Headmistress seeking to block a student from learning, because of her particular affliction?

Proper precautions should and must be taken when dealing with any potential hazards, but that does not mean that we avoid anyone who might pose a problem.  Hogwarts must help those who seek its help.  The risk is worth the reward.  That's what Hogwarts has always been about after all, right?

With sincere concern,

Chance Ryker
