The Tawse family is a pureblood sept (family group) of the Clan Farquharson - a Highland Clan originating in Aberdeenshire.  The Tawse family, proper, originates from Montrose, along the coast in North Eastern Scotland.  The name Tawse is derived from the plural form of the Scottish word taw and means a whip made of thick strands of leather that was used as a means of corporal punishment in Scottish schools.

While Clan Farquharson is reputed to have been magical in the early days of the clans history, not all septs of the clan have maintained purebloodlines.  Some septs are highly mixed while some septs appear to be completely muggle.  The Tawses always taken equal pride in their pureblood status as their Scottish heritage.  Remaining pureblood is still holds priority over marrying Scottish.
