Wand: Reed, 10 1/3“, with Phoenix Feather core. Extremely thin, the wand is also springy, leading Freddie to often push the two ends gently together absentmindedly when concentrating so that the center arches.
Physical Description: Standing just shy of 6 feet, Freddie is your typical late teenager; his light blue eyes, while still a little bright, are beginning to become dull and cloud over, and his hair has been cut short to allow him to work better. Though he leaves it flat while at work to allow for a more formal appearance, outside he spikes the top into a more youthful style. When the mood takes him, he also adds some black highlights.
His skin tone is somewhat pale, and he lacks muscles, giving him the look of a man who rarely ventures outside for exercise, yet still tries to remain healthy. When feeling playful, Freddie refers to his complexion as ‘his Netherland tan’. In order to play to this appearance, Freddie typically dresses in a casual, short-sleeved shirt and dark navy jeans. He usually wears more fashionable shoes, rather than more practical trainers or pumps.
Personality Description: Frederick is a friendly young man, who tries to be fair to everyone. However, he dislikes arrogance, and is unlikely to try get along with those he has a bad first impression of. Naturally, with some of his relatives, this does mean his family ties can often become strained.
Though well-mannered, Freddie’s polite front only slips away once he becomes extremely annoyed by others, and at this point his temper can become short and his tone far more sarcastic and, in a way, vicious. Fortunately, however, he has an amazing ability for keeping his head in a crisis, and so this only becomes a problem in the most extreme of cases. This talent also comes in handy in his job, where he needs to be quick thinking and alert when the people he is dealing with are often at their most panicked.
History: Freddie’s past is one of two halves, and in a way, Frederick Henry Turpin was born on August 24th 1998, when Gerda Turpin adopted a young Dorian Tate from the Ministry, removing any past memories and replacing them with those of a different childhood.
Beforehand, the boy was the son of the Death Eater Delphineas Tate and his wife, Gizela Tate (nee Osterdike), who were living in Haarlem at the time. When he was 5, his mother was convinced by Delphineas to join him, and together they began using their families home to store dark artefacts. Nearly four years later, however, due to a tip-off by one Analiza Snark, their home was raided by ministry officials. His parents were taken to Azkaban, alongside his grandmother Greta, and Dorian became a ward of the ministry. The Osterdike fortune, meanwhile, was divided between four members of the family, Dorian included.
All of Dorian’s memories were changed once Gerda adopted him, and his new siblings, under force, took the Unbreakable Vow. Freddie Turpin came into existence, fully formed at age 9, with a strangely perfect childhood. Freddie never questioned it, of course. To him, there was nothing to question: It was his childhood, it was real. The next two years passed uneventfully, and Freddie, given the choose between Hogwarts and Beauxbaton, chose to start at Hogwarts at age 11. There he was sorted into Hufflepuff - something that must have come as a surprise to these who knew his real upbringing.
As the seven years at Hogwarts past, Freddie quickly began to gain a good grasp of magic, learning at the same rate as his other classmates; not falling behind but not excelling in any areas. He did, however, develop a love of potions and various charms that could be useful to healing, and at age 16, in a meeting with his head of house about a possible future carrier, it was suggested he studied to become a healer. Following on this advice, Freddie took the appropriate N.E.W.T.s, passing his O.W.L.s with high enough grades to earn himself a place on the advanced courses needed.
It was at this point, however, that the flashbacks began. Midway through his sixth year, he began to remember snippets of a darkened house, as well as a trio of shadowy faces concealed behind strangely shaped objects. After each one, he would awaken in a cold sweat, shaking, unsure if what he had seen was really a dream. All he could make out was that there were two women and one man, and that the female faces were far more forward than that of the male. Though he asked a few select teachers, in particular his Defence against the Dark Arts and Potions professors, none of them could figure out what it might be, and that it was probably nothing to worry about. He even went as far at to ask the Divination professor, though as soon as she recommended drawing up a year-long dream calendar, he prompted made his excuses and left, reminding himself to remove that classroom from his list of places to ever visit again.
Instead, he tried to push the dreams to the back of his mind with revision. It seemed to pay off, however, as his marks steadily increased and his dreams became far less frequent. He graduated with flying colours, in particular in Potions and Charms, and the dreams seemed to subside, appearing perhaps once or twice a month (though they still had the same effect on him). Upon graduating from Hogwarts, he began training at St. Mungos, throwing himself behind his work. Now nearing the end of his training, he hopes to join the hospital as a fully-trained healer soon.
What is your occupation? How do you go about it? How did you get your current occupation? How does your past and abilities justify your current skills?: Freddie is a Healer-in-Training, joining one of St. Mungos introduction courses. Freddie’s skills with Potions and a few of the basic healing charms makes his suited to this job, and his cool-headedness, make him suited to work in a hospital environment.
Writing Sample:
Setting down the crate of potions, Freddie picked up the nearest vial and turned it in his hand, holding it by the neck and running a finger along the label, just under the words, muttering under his breath the writing. ”SkeleGrow,” he nodded to himself, not needing the read the rest. Only an idiot would be training for a healer position and not know what SkeleGrow did. There should be another 11 bottle in this particular crate, alongside 12 potions of Anti-Boil Juice. He would have to double-check in a moment though, just to be safe.
Closing his eyes, he began to tick off the ingredients to the SkeleGrow in his head before opening his eyes and turning the bottle over in his hand to check how many he had gotten right. Smiling to himself as he progressed along the list, he was happy to see that he had all of them right. Granted, it was one of the very first potions he had learnt in class, but it still gave him that rush. Putting it down and counting the lids off, he checked them off on the list next to him, followed by the Anti-Boil Juice. All present and correct, he began to stack the bottles in their correct place in the ward’s storeroom. All routine, but all important.
”Turpin! Turpin, are you there?”
No sooner had he finished that a voice began to carry through the open door behind him. He knew it instantly - healer Peter Scholl, the person he was shadowing this week. Not his favourite of the healers at St. Mungos, the man was, at least, professional. And certainly Freddie didn’t hate him. It was just the fact that the man didn’t seem to clock off, even calling him by his last name when they were both off duty. He could cope with it…
”Ah, Turpin, very good. Yes, I need you to go see Mrs. Vel in Ward C. She seems to be complaining about some sort of back problem that she says might be a malignant body-bind spell.”
A malignant what? Freddie turned his head, seeing that Scholl had reached the doorway and was not looking in on the healer-in-training. Raising an eyebrow, he could see that Scholl knew as well as he did there was no such problem, but that they had to be polite all the same. They were on duty, after all. Sighing slightly, Freddie moved the crate onto the floor and nodded, heading out the door, doing his best to put on a charming face. In truth, Mrs. Vel annoyed the hell out of Freddie, seeing as she had been in every other day to complain about something-or-other for the past two and a half months. Somebody would have to have words; Freddie didn’t know how long he could put up with her! But, he had to. All part of the job.
Sum up your character in one paragraph: Freddie is a healer-in-training with St. Mungos hospital. An ex-Hogwarts student, Freddie has a calm head in a crisis and a polite manner, though this is often tested by the most extreme of those around him. Apt with potions and a number of different charms, Freddie over achieves as much as he under achieves, but does his best to do so with a pinch of salt. After all, you can’t have everything! With a past he doesn’t know exists except in shadowy flashbacks, he is just your average, late teenage, magically-gifted boy.
