    Physical Description:

Sam’s most notable feature is her hair. Naturally wavy, long and a light brown colour with hints of copper in it, it seems to be very easy to manage. It takes no styling, and yet it looks like it has been styled rather well. She tends not to bother even combing it on a morning, preferring to simply run her fingers through it, giving it a more tousled look.

Moving down, her eyes are a chocolate brown. They are averagely sized – not enormous, but not small and squinty either. She has quite long eyelashes, something that seems to be a St.James trait. Her face is oval shaped and her chin is slightly pointed. She has freckles which stand out more when she is in the sun. Her skin tans quite well, giving her a golden glow. She has plump lips that have a tendency to dry up if she doesn’t keep them moisturised, hence lip balms are something she always carries round in her bag. Her ears are pierced, twice in each ear. She tends to wear two pairs of studs, unless she’s going out somewhere in which case she wears more dressy earrings.

She has an average shaped body and is around 5’5” tall – well, small. She is small but adequately proportioned. She likes to think that she is able to fit into small spaces easily this way, which would come in handy if she ever had to do a runner for blowing up the alchemists she works at. She could just slip inside someone’s suitcase and she’d be off – nobody would be any the wiser.

Sam has a tattoo of a small feather on her hip, with blue tints to the art. This tattoo is symbolic of her son, Lewis. The tattoo is magical, and every so often it moves as though it’s been caught in a breeze.

    Personality Description:

Samia is fairly outgoing, and considering what she’s been throughfor the last couple of years, quite a happy person. She’s good at hiding what she really feels – putting on a positive front is important to her, as she doesn’t think it’s fair to bring other people down with her own problems.

She is a loving mother and a caring friend. She likes to do right by people, but sometimes what she thinks is right is not necessarily right for another person. Since her husband left her, she has had to deal with insecurity issues, and she now struggles to allow herself or her son form any sort of bond with anyone. She thinks that any man she speaks to will be just like her ex, and is only after her for her name, money or something else a little more insulting.

Like most of the St.James girls, she has quite a large jealous streak. She has a better time keeping it under check now, as she doesn’t allow herself to come close enough to anyone to feel protective over them, or feel jealousy for the person trying to catch their attention.

She has a dry sense of humour and is quick-witted. She is easy to get along with for the most part, and tries not to take life too seriously. She doesn’t like failure, which is one of the reasons she struggled so much when her husband left her. The failure of her marriage was a big insult, as that was one area of her life she was sure she could cope well with.

    History:

Samia St.James was born as a middle child but the first daughter. Edward and Evan, her two older brothers were born three years apart, and she another three after Evan. Eleanor was born when Sam was 9 years old. Their parents had high hopes for all of their children. From their birth, their parents were plotting who they would marry. Samia was basically betrothed to her husband-to-be from the age of seven. Obviously, her parents didn’t even introduce the pair until Hogwarts, hoping that they would learn to love each other in their own time. At Hogwarts, Samia was sorted into Ravenclaw. Her apt mind and thirst for knowledge made her a great candidate for that house, though her parents had hoped she would follow her brothers through Slytherin. Ravenclaw would have been their second choice, and they took solace in knowing at least she wasn’t a complete dunce.

On being introduced to Thomas Grosvenor at the tender age of eleven, Samia didn’t think much of him. He was arrogant, bossy and quite rude. But then how else did eleven year old boys act? The pair didn’t have much interaction through school, except when their parents had parties in the holidays, where they would be thrown together to keep each other company. As they grew older, Samia began to realise that actually Thomas wasn’t that bad. In fact, by the time they were ready to leave Hogwarts, she had come to like him quite a lot.

He didn’t seem to show her the same attention, so she told her parents that clearly it wasn’t going to work. They were quite pushy and tried to convince her that this was definitely going to work, if only she would give it another go. This raised her suspicions, and it was at this point that things started to click into place – her family would benefit greatly from having such a match. However, at the time she liked Thomas too much to actually care the reasons her parents had for wanting them together.

Eventually, the pair got together. At eighteen years old, they had their whole lives ahead of them. Samia was training to be an alchemist and Thomas wasn’t really doing anything productive. He was spending his parents’ money and having a good time. They were together for six years before they finally got married – it seemed the next logical step in their relationship. Samia was absolutely smitten by this point, and it never once occurred to her that her husband-to-be may have been having an affair behind her back.

When she fell pregnant she was ecstatic. She wanted nothing more than to have a family and she was excited about being a mother. She was looking forward to showering their child with more attention and love than she had ever known in her whole life. Thomas, however, seemed quite apprehensive about it. Sam put it down to the fact that he was twenty-six and becoming a father for the first time.

She found out the truth when their son Lewis was two weeks old. She took him out to the park one day in the autumn, wrapped up warm with a scarf and gloves. When she arrived back at the house Thomas wasn’t there. Things were different, too – the house was more barren than it had been before. There was a note on the kitchen table, saying he couldn’t live a lie anymore. He’d been in love with another woman for some years now, and he shouldn’t have to hide his relationship with her anymore.

He stated in his letter that she would never hear from him or see him again, and he wouldn’t interfere with ‘her son’. She knew exactly what this meant – he didn’t want to have to provide for the child he didn’t want, and was attempting to make himself untraceable. Enraged, she got straight to work. It took the best part of two years to find him and get him to sign papers of annulment, but he had no choice. Their marriage had been null and void from the beginning, as he had been having another relationship behind her back all through their marriage.

She thought that being free of him would make things easier, but she now finds that she is scared of letting her guard down. According to her parents, Samia has tainted everything the St.James name stands for by letting her marriage fail and her husband wander. In her parents’ opinion, she deserved what she got – she obviously wasn’t treating him right, as why else would a man stray from a St.James girl? Regardless of their opinion of their estranged daughter, they refuse to leave her alone as she would prefer, instead bombarding her constantly with questions about what she is doing, who she is seeing and how their precious grandson is. Sam doesn’t want them to get too close to her son, as she knows he is just another pawn in their destructive game of wizard’s chess.

    What is your occupation?

Sam is an alchemist. She works for a company that provides potions to St.Mungo’s, though she tries her hardest to never actually venture to the hospital itself. She excelled at potions and herbology in school, and knew that something in the potions industry was her calling. Who said that a St.James girl couldn’t earn an honest living? She is patient and a perfectionist, meaning she is the ideal person to be working on such things as antidotes and other medical potions needed at the hospital.

    Writing Sample:

Sam looked down at her son playing with a children’s toy wand on the floor. She smiled sadly. If only he didn’t remind her so much of his dad. Poor kid was never going to know who his dad was, and how was she going to explain to him that his dad didn’t want to get to know him? How could she ever face telling him that his dad didn’t love his mum enough, and that he preferred another woman?

The little boy held the wand out at his mum and pretended to cast a spell on her. She grinned at him. Soon he would be running around, wanting to play quidditch and talk about girls. She scrunched her face up slightly. She did not want to be the one to have that conversation with him. Maybe she’d rope her dad in for that…well, there were a few years left before anything like that came about.

A rap came at the window. Sam looked up and saw an unfamiliar owl poised with its leg out. She went to the window and opened it, allowing the bird in. Popping a knut in the pouch attached to its leg, her eyes widened slightly when she saw who the letter was from – the lawyer dealing with her annulment. Her heart began to pound against her chest as she ripped the envelope open. She hadn’t heard anything for so long, so surely this was a good sign.

Her eyes scanned the letter, and then closed. She put her hand out to the window to steady herself. “It’s over…” She whispered to herself. In the eyes of the Ministry, her marriage had never taken place. She was now legally Miss Samia St.James once more.

Sum up your character in one paragraph:

The polar opposite of what her parents want her to be, Sam doesn’t care for pure-blood or money. All she ever wanted out of life was a loving husband and children. She got a child, but her ‘loving husband’ turned out to be not-so-loving. She is conscientious, generous and caring but has a jealous streak. She has closed off her emotions and is scared to let anyone in because of what happened to her in the past.

    Structural Analogues

    Lewis St.James

Lewis is the light of Sam's life. She lives for her son and would equally die for him. Everything she strives to achieve in life is for his benefit and his only. Though he reminds her so much of her estranged ex-husband, she couldn't imagine a life without her little bundle of joy. She never feels like she does enough for him, always assuming that she can do better and that the life she has to offer him is less than what he deserves.

    Charlotte St.James

Charlotte is Sam's cousin and one of her best friends. Charlotte and Sam connect well on a personal level in a way that Charlotte doesn't connect with her other cousins. Sam has a very easy going nature which compliments Charlotte's flighty, exciting thirst for life.

    Thomas Grosvenor

Thomas Grosvenor was Sam's husband. They were pushed together by their families who were only interested in a pureblood match. Though it all seemed to be working, and though Sam was totally happy with their relationship clearly things weren't as they seemed. Thomas left her when Lewis was only two weeks old and never returned. He left a note on the kitchen table stating that he didn't want to be involved in the upbringing of his son.
