Full Character Name: Évariste Léandre Beaumont ((his English relatives call him Reese, derived from the pronunciation of his name which is ay-vah-Reest))
Character Birthday & Age: January 31, 1977 | 31
City & Country of Birth: Nantes, France
Pureblood, Halfblood or Muggleborn?: Half-Blood
Alma Mater: Beauxbatons
Job: Chocolatier / Owner of Divinité en Chocolat
Wand: Reese’s wand is made of Zebrawood, and is only eight inches long. It is very springy and has a decorated shaft. Évariste is not in the habit of carrying it, as he very rarely uses it.
Physical Description: Many would consider Évariste to be a handsome person, although he certainly does not think of himself as being anywhere near it. Évariste would consider himself average looking, and it comes across in his body language.
Reese is rather tall, standing at 6’3”. He is in decent shape, due to the face he prepares all of his meals and pays close attention to his diet. Although he is young, Évariste is starting to go gray. His hair is salt and peppered, most noticeably so at the temples. He has a kind, endearing face and a very charming, easy going smile. It is obvious to tell by looking at him that Reese is a kind soul and easy to get along with!
Évariste tends to dress for both style and comfort, though he is not obsessed with name brand fashions. He wears both muggle and wizards clothes, having grown up being exposed to both worlds. Often times whatever he is wearing has splashes of flower or other baking ingredients over it. Most of the time Reese smells of chocolate. Since he works with it, and lives in the small flat above his shop, the smell seems to have permanently permeated his wardrobe.
Personality Description: Évariste is first and foremost a people pleaser. He concerns himself with the thoughts and feelings of others above his own. The reason he is in London is to take care of an ailing grandmother so that his mother won’t have to take time out of her schedule to do it. It makes him happy to make other people happy, which is part of the reason he enjoys his job so much. Making sweets for other people is a way for him to make the world smile.
He is very laid back and easy going, most people who have known Reese his entire life have rarely seen him angry. He doesn’t see the point in it. Évariste likes to tell others that every moment wasted being angry, is a moment of happiness that you have lost forever. He does his best to walk the walk of the talk that he talks.
Reese has the tendency to come off as being a bit aloof due to his somewhat shy nature and his tendency to be a bit socially awkward. He is a good conversationalist if the topic interests him, but if it is something he knows little about he can be a bit taciturn. Évariste enjoys listening to people when they talk, though, and can be a great person to use if you need to vent. He tries to avoid giving direct advice, though, as he does not want to be the cause of a downfall should his advice go awry.
Évariste dreams of one day getting married and having a family of his own. He wants to give his kids the kind of life his parents gave him. The only problem is that Évariste tends to make a fool of himself around girls he finds attractive, and has no clue how to respond when they flirt with him. His own attempts at flirting are so disastrous it’s best not to mention them.
History:
Gilbert Beaumont owned a five star restaurant in Nantes, and was enjoying life. The only thing missing, it seemed, was a woman. And then, one night, in walked Georgiana Lester. Georgiana was the most beautiful woman he had ever seen, and she ordered without hesitation (even though he could hear the foreign accent wrapping around her words) and seemed to have an excellent taste in wine. He decided to take the plunge, and approached her table. The rest, as they say, is history.
Georgiana was an art dealer, one who specialized in the trade of rare, magical paintings. She enjoyed the finer things in life, and came from a wizarding family in London. The family were wary at first of her moving to France to be with Gilbert, but upon meeting him quickly grew to trust and love him.
The couple were married only six months after meeting in Gilbert’s restaurant, and a child was born ten months later. This child was Évariste Beaumont.
Reese grew up in a home that valued individuality and self expression. He was very rarely disciplined, and it was believed that the best way for him to learn was through experience. As such, Évariste never really understood what it meant to respect authority, which would become very evident when it was time for him to begin school.
Prior to his time at Beauxbatons, Évariste’s mother was responsible for his education. She homeschooled him, and often took him on trips around the world to procure and sell different pieces of art. Reese looks back on these trips with an intense fondness, and he became extremely close to his mother during this time.
His father, although not absent, seemed to work a great deal more than his mother did. Gilbert was always very busy with his restaurant, and generally when he was home he was too tired to be very much fun. He did his best to show his son that he cared about him, but Évariste seemed to miss the memo the majority of the time, and grew up thinking his father disappointed or indifferent.
Reese was thrilled to be starting school. He missed his mother severely in his first year, but it was nice to be among other children his age and learning magic. He had lots of trouble in his first year having to learn to obey the rules that were set down. Évariste never had rules before in his life, and it was a drastic change. He found himself in trouble quite a lot, and was soon mislabeled a problem child because of this.
The rest of his school years went much more smoothly. He discovered early on that he had a natural talent in potions and Herbology classes. Évariste was not particularly skilled with his wand, and found he had difficulty passing any class that required him to use it the majority of the time.
Upon graduating Beauxbatons, Reese enrolled in culinary school at the urging of his father. Shortly after beginning classes he discovered he enjoyed doing desserts, with a special interest in confections and even more so in working with chocolate. He decided at this point that he would one day be a chocolatier, and intended to use his skills in magic to help him develop a successful business in the wizarding world. (Once he had enough money to begin his own business, of course.)
After finishing culinary school he took on a position in his father’s restaurant preparing desserts. Many of his dishes soon became talked about by local papers and magazines. He enjoyed the praise, and enjoyed his job. Évariste worked with his father for nine years before he found himself packing up to move to London, England.
Reese’s maternal grandmother was very ill. Georgiana did not have the time to take care of her mother full time, and did not wish to hire someone to do so. Évariste eventually agreed to do it for her after hearing her lament over it for a few months. Anything to please his mother, really. After moving to London, he soon bonded with his grandmother. Reese discovered she was a very intelligent, very kind hearted woman.
His grandmother is the one who pushed him to start his own business. She gave him the funding to get a building in Diagon Alley and to buy all of the equipment needed. She simply told him it would come out of his inheritance and winked when he complained and swore to repay her some day.
Évariste named his new chocolate shop Divinité en Chocolat. He decorated it in a simple way, and set to work with further experimentation and production of specialty chocolates- magical and non magical alike. His shop has now been open for three months and is slowly growing in popularity. Évariste believes that it will be very successful eventually.
What is your occupation? How do you go about it?
How did you get your current occupation?
How does your past and abilities justify your current skills?: Upon graduating from Beauxbatons, Évariste enrolled in culinary school. He had always loved cooking and showed a spectacular flair for potions, and decided to seek enough of an education to combine the two. Eventually, Reese would find a deep love for confectionary classes, in particular working with chocolate. He decided to become a chocolatier while still in school.
After graduating he took up a job in his father’s restaurant as a dessert chef. In his free time he experimented mixing magic with chocolate. Évariste soon learned that he was particularly good at creating magical effects with his chocolate. He even began to sell chocolates spiked with love potions to girls he had graduated from Beauxbatons with.
After moving to London to care for his sick grandmother, Reese decided to open up his own shop in Diagon Alley. He has been in business just a few months, but has had promising results thus far. He is working on getting together a catalog for people to place mail orders, and intends to hire a staff once business picks up enough.
Writing Sample:
Évariste leaned against the counter inside Divinité en Chocolat. He had just opened for the day, and had propped the door open with the large chalkboard sign he used to advertise the day’s specials. Often times a few stragglers came in on their way to work, not wanting to wait in the long lines that formed at the better known eateries in Diagon. To some, chocolate wasn’t much of a breakfast, but to others it was better than nothing.
He had taken to baking a few pastries and things of that nature for the morning customers. Reese was skilled in the kitchen in other areas apart from chocolate, he just didn’t use it as much since he had been living with his grandmother instead of working in his father’s restaurant.
Évariste stood straight as a young woman entered, and he watched with interest as she inhaled deeply and then began to peer through the glass at the treats inside. She was an attractive woman, petite and plain looking. Évariste had always found women who were plainer to be more attractive, it was like they exuded a quiet confidence. He fidgeted awkwardly when she came to a halt in front of him.
“Good morning,” she greeted with a bright smile. “I was wondering what kind of chocolate you’d suggest.”
“Yes. If you could just…” he trailed off, wandering into the back room momentarily before reappearing with a small dish that had multiple squares on it. “I have samples,” he told her, tripping over his own feet as he made his way back to the counter. The platter clattered onto the surface and he blushed furiously. “Sorry about that. Is it, uhm, a romantic gift or…?”
She laughed, a tinkling laugh that warmed his insides. “No, of course not. A friend of mine, it’s her birthday, I wanted to bring her a treat since she works today. And as I’m sure you know, chocolate is the best way to a woman’s heart.” The woman winked at him, and Reese grinned stupidly.
He pushed the platter in her direction, incapable of explaining anything more at the moment. She sampled a few, then made a loud noise of pleasure after sampling a certain square. “Oooh, this would be perfect!”
“You have exquisite taste,” he told her, before rattling off all of the technicalities involved in the chocolate, slipping in and out of French as he did so. It was an accident, naturally, but if Évariste was particularly excited or nervous he tended to slip back into French.
After she made the purchase, he took special care to wrap it in the nicest paper and to make it as neat as possible. She gave him a finger wave as she left, and he waved back stupidly. He went to lean back on the counter after she left, sighing as he did so, not even realizing he was elbow deep in chocolate samples.
Sum up your character in one paragraph: Évariste is a kind hearted individual, who tends to put the wants and needs of others above his own. Reese can be a bit socially awkward, and tends to clam up in huge crowds, but he is, over all, a very friendly fellow. He is free thinking, artistic, and skilled at what he does. His work ethic is unmatched, and he has a very positive attitude with all of his endeavors.
