[Aug 27] Are They Giving Us the Whole Truth? on October 20, 2009, 11:18:20 AM August 27, 2008Are They Giving Us the Whole Truth?Random Act of Muggleborn-hatred or Something More Sinister?by Evan IrallisDear Readers,You may remember back a week ago when we offered a brief, initial report about the recovery of Akiva Katz, a muggleborn Ministry librarian that was, allegedly, missing for almost two weeks. Despite the diligent efforts of your tireless reporter, the Department of Magical Law Enforcement had kept careful control of any and all information regarding the case. As my loyal readers might now, I'm far from easily discouraged and after a week of thorough questioning, it appears this kidnapping might not have been a simple random act of violence as the Ministry has previously stated. The victim, Akiva Katz, was reported to have gone missing on the 8th of August. At the time, representatives of the Ministry of Magic assured us that there was nothing to suggest this was anything more than a simple missing person's case. They pointed to a lack of evidence of foul play as an indication that this was likely just a case of a woman who had slipped away for a week and simply forgot to notify anyone of her expected return date. Despite these reassurances from officials, those close to Katz have repeatedly claimed that such irresponsibility was not typical for the woman. "She wouldn't have just left without notifying anyone. She's in trouble," a friend of Katz reported to the Daily Prophet. During the early night hours of August 17th, in the midst of Hogsmeade's Woodcroft Day celebrations, Katz was found near the Shrieking Shack. Access to the victim has been, repeatedly thwarted by both Auror and St. Mungo's officials. All were reluctant to give any details about the woman's discovery though the rumors and hypotheses have been numerous. As always, Tamis Raynor, Head of the Auror office (who, my readers might remember turned down an offer for the Head of the Department of Law Enforcement) has been, as always, turning a deaf ear to the press.Luckily, a generous, anonymous contributer has provided the Daily Prophet with a first-hand description of the victim's discovery. Katz was, allegedly, first discovered by a Hogwarts student by the name of Fauna Blake. I admit, my suspicions about this case first started to build when I found interviewing this young woman near impossible. This Daily Prophet reporter can attest that the young woman was so unnerved and frazzled that she could produce no comprehensible responses to my inquiries. However, thanks once again to our anonymous contributer, the Daily Prophet was able to learn that "... [Katz] was simply discarded - left there like a simple worthless sack of potatoes - or a Woodcroft decoration. And she looked horrible. Like a living skeleton - a barely living skeleton," the anonymous contact explained to me. "It was clear, whoever had taken her had ruthlessly and, with no regards to civility, tortured her." The Ministry of Magic's official spokesperson continues to claim that this incident was just some random crime of opportunity. "It's important to remain calm and ensure our readers that there's nothing to suggest the crime has an organized or premeditated nature to it." Despite the Ministry's insistence, I'm not convinced. The Ministry of Magic certainly has an unfortunate history of downplaying and ignoring the indications of organized crime. As I've suggested before, it sometimes seems the Ministry has never learned what those signs might be. Especially considering what might be the most shocking bit of withheld information regarding this case. It is not my intentions to shock our readers, however, I believe we have a right to know to the truth. I recently learned that the perpetrator carved - or perhaps burnt - some sort of symbol into Katz' flesh. Neither the victim nor the Auror's office has been forthcoming with any information to substantiate this rumor but, as always, I will continue to relentlessly pursue this matter. Skip to next post
