    History:

Nearly smack dab in the middle of a warm April day, Dexter Pratt and his wife Dora got the first look at their firstborn, and only, child. Madeline Etana Pratt arrived in this world much like she would be for the rest of her life, angry, loud and the apple of her fathers eye. The moment Dexter held the red faced bundle of joy in his arms and her tiny fist punched him in the nose, he was smitten. No one, not even his dear wife, was as important to him then his baby girl. Coincidentally, this may have been the reason for happened shortly after.

Five years may seem like a long time in theory, but when you have a curious and bright little girl running around, causing havoc at all possible, it tends to fly by. In those first five years, the small family seemed perfect, almost too much so. Dexter's job had them in a nice home and his daughter drowned in all the toys she would ever want. Unfortunately, Maddie's beloved father was often gone, studying dragons, leaving Maddie alone with her mother. At the time, Maddie did love her mother, but she never had any fun with her. Her mother was too critical, too cold... too distant. Sometimes Maddie wondered if she loved her at all, or if she was just pretending to keep up appearances.

It would not become apparent to Madeline for several years that this was exactly what her mother was doing. Dora was becoming increasingly dissatisfied with her marriage to Dexter, who was always away and saddling her with the rather obnoxiously rambunctious toddler. When he was home, he spent most of his time playing with Maddie. Dora almost resented the child for stealing her husband and tried to steal him back again. When this didn't work, she found a new outlet for her affections: Her husbands best friend. Leonard paid her attention. Leonard treated her like a queen. Leonard loved her more then the little brat.

Maddie was only five and didn't understand what was happening to her family. One minute she was enjoying her life with both a loving mother and father, and her uncle Leo who visited her when her daddy was gone. The next minute, her mother and uncle Leo were gone and her father was in the pits of dispair. And then a train of woman started coming into her life, acting like they were her mother. She would learn a couple years later that they were nannies her father hired to care for her. Unfortunately, by the time she learned of their reason for being there, she had already successfully disbatched several. Not willing to admit defeat, she continued her unruly behavior until she was of the age to attend Hogwarts, freeing her from their tyranny once and for all.

Maddie wasn't a bad child, simply a very deeply hurt one. Her mother betrayal left several holes in her life, as well as her and her fathers heart. Maybe it was then that her love affair with 'the truth' started. She hated appearances and facades that people hid behind, and it was her goal in life to uncover every truth behind every lie. The first lie she uncovered was her mothers infidelity, and when she realized what had happened all those years ago, she denounced her mother and claimed she was motherless to anyone who would listen. Her loyalty to her father, which was already strong, increased tenfold. Perhaps it was this deep loyalty and dedication to the truth that incited the Sorting Hat to place her in Hufflepuff.

Despite her many faults, many of which had to do with her big mouth, Maddie loved Hogwarts. There was such a lush variety of people to interact with, clubs to join and causes to support that she was always busy doing something. Encouraged by her father, who was a strong supporter of animal rights, Maddie threw herself into their cause, from fundraising to picketing to becoming a junior member of every magical animal rights group in the wizarding world. She also went on to become very politically and socially aware, reading the newspapers with more vigor then normal for a preteen girl. It was through both of these activities that she found her two idols: Hermoine Granger for her work with Elvish Rights and Niobe Thursby for her no nonsense articles and strong love for the "truth". At age 13, Maddie already knew that she would one day grow up to be an investigative reporter, and that most of her investigating would be on the treatment of beings and beasts.

Aside from her 'causes', Maddie lived the normal life of a teenage witch. At 15, she has finally hit that age where she is very aware of boys, something she finds quite perplexing since she has always been close to them as friends. When her best friend returned to school looking quite a bit more attractive, Maddie has found herself lost for words for the first time in her life. Between this and fighting for the rights of a close friend, and werewolf, who has been unjustly banished from the school, Maddie has a lot on her hands.

How Do You Fit Into Your House?:
Though she can be quite sharp tongued and brutal with her criticism, Maddie harbors all the best qualities of Hufflepuffs: She is loyal to her loved ones, Honest about her intentions and she throws herself into her work with a 110%.

    Writing Sample:
Show your character in a scene that illustrates the
best and worst aspects of their personality. Include action, dialog and thought.

"How does this skirt make me look? Do you think Kevin will like it?"

Maddie glanced up from her newspaper to see her dorm mate twirling around in what amounted to an abomination of paleblue silk. The other girls tittered and complimented her look, but Maddie grunted in distaste. Casting her a cold look, her roomate put her hands on her hips and demanded in anger "Oh and what do YOU think, Pratt?"

"Well lets see..." Maddie snapped her newspaper shut and looked the girl over. Her look wasn't meant to be mean or critical, but the mere twitch of her eyes made the girls hackles rise "... The fabric is wrong for this weather, it will get wrinkled and stick to you in minutes... which yes, will make you look bigger then you are. And forgive me, but isn't that awefully short? It makes you look...well...easy."

"So?" The girl snapped back, obviously hurt.

"Well... If that is the kind of girl this Kevin likes then he isn't worth your time." Maddie said pointedly. Despite the girls aggression towards her, Maddie liked her and hated to see her hurt. Her dormmate didn't share this affection, for her response was a sneer and the pun Maddie hated most in the world "Merlin Maddie, you are such a... a prat."

"Whatever. Don't come crying to me when he calls you a fat whore..." Maddie muttered, going back to her paper.

Not a few hours later did the inevitable happen. The door to the dorm room slammed open, and the maligned classmate came barrelling in, throwing herself on her bed while she sobbed. Maddie was quiet for a moment, trying to not console her. She had warned her after all, it wasn't her fault that she was to stupid to listen. But after listening to her sobs for a couple minutes, Maddie couldn't hold back any longer.

Standing, she made her way to the other bed and sat on the edge, her hand resting on the crying girls shoulder "What happened..." She said softly. After a few sputters and a whimper or two, the girl managed to choke out "He... He tried to.. to get me to let... to let him get to second base... and and... when I wouldn't.. he called me fat and ugly and a tease!" she then buried her head back in her already damp pillow and sobbed again. Maddie sighed and rubbed her back. "Why do you care about idiots like that... Jerks like that aren't worth your time. He probably has a really small..." She continued to console her friend and in moments there was a bark of laughter replacing the sobs. Her work was done.

Sum up your character in one paragraph:
If there ever was a Fighter for the Cause, that fighter was Maddie Pratt. She believes in telling the truth, and making everyone else own up as well. From writing articles to protests to debates, Maddie is part of every club, group and affiliation that supports the underdog and downtrodden.
