The man had the hardest time keeping still when it came to excitement. Even now after doing the job for a couple years, Dex was very much amused by the tales of the former Care of Magical Creatures Professors students had to endure over time. It seemed some were so classic that he hardly found it fair to try and top them. This was the first class of the year so he didn't want to frighten them, yet. Though he had to admit talk of if he might bring a book that bites back caused a tickle in the back of his throat. There were five levels of creatures according to the Ministry, they ranged from 'Boring' to 'Known Wizard Killer' it was Dexter's goal to never get too close to either extreme. If he wanted to keep the young minds interested in the subject matter he would have to bring them something to captivate and decapitate. What he had planned for the first class was no less spectacular than any other time he trained and tamed Dragons in Romania and Wales. If the students wished to know more along that subject matter he would have no problem going into details. Though Dragons were for the later years to learn from. In his head he hoped to gather a response by bringing out two creatures which he had held under two separate sheets clearly covering cages. Grinning ear to ear at his own genius, Dexter sat as he watched the fifth years file into the classroom. It was another chance to teach all the things he has learned over the years to bright young eager sponge like minds. “Welcome leave your preconceived notions of animals at the door,” he chuckled to students who looked eager to peer under the clothe into the cages. She’d been thinking about it all day. Care of Magical Creatures was a class she always looked forward to. Well, perhaps not the class itself, but the teacher. She probably wouldn’t admit it, but she’s had a little schoolgirl crush on Professor Dexter Pratt since she started taking the class. It was also a little weird, since he had a daughter Mysti’s age. It was right after lunch, and Mysti had made sure to allow enough time to get to the classroom on time. And perhaps a little early. She would have brought him something like an apple, but to be honest, Mysti wasn’t that kind of student. She’d work on impressing Professor Pratt by having already read some of the book. Though if she remembered it, that would be a different story.Walking up to the fifth floor, Mysti navigated her way to the Care of Magical Creatures room. Upon entering, she saw Professor Pratt and two big cages with sheets over them. Her mind started to wander through some of the stuff she had gone over in her book. Doxies? Pixies? Maybe a Knarl or a Chizpurfle. Wait, Chizpurfle’s are small. No, it was a Clabbert she was thinking of. I should just ask! Mysti though with an inside chuckle.“Good afternoon, Professor Pratt! What’s in the cages? Nothing too dangerous, I hope. But I know you’ll keep us safe if it is!” Mysti said with a smile, going up and taking a seat in the front row. She wouldn’t normally sit in the front row, but this class was probably the only exception. Mysti then took out her book, notebook and quill and was ready for class to start. Well, as soon as everyone else got there! He liked classes - he liked learning. There were very few classes he didn't look forward to, though Divination was most likely to be one of them. But, there were still a few classes that Sasha really, truly looked forward to with a real edge of excitement. And, Care of Magical Creatures was one of them. His first few years at Hogwarts, even before he'd started taking the class, he'd steal down to the paddocks and just watch the animal - letting his curiosity (and when he thought no one was looking - his camera) just soak up the images. There was no question - Sasha had always exceeded in this class. If there were marks taken off of his work, it was usually because the essays he turned in were twice as long as they needed to be and had - subsequently - been slightly annoying to the one reading them. If he could do more extra credit work or - oh - just volunteer to spend more time around the hippogriffs and thestrals and, especially, (even though they were so rudely prejudiced against him) unicorns - he would immediately. And, this year, Sasha was eager to see how much his summer internship with the magizoology clinic in Hogsmeade would help him, as well. He'd gotten to spend so much more time with the animals, though often usually just doing grunt work. But, he'd drunk in every last moment of it. Whether that was something he wanted to do when he finished Hogwarts, he didn't know but he'd probably always have animals around at the least. Sasha cast the cages a curious glance as he stepped into the classroom but, thankfully, could leave the verbal snooping to Mystique. Listening for the Professor's response, Sasha slipped into another front row seat and leaned forward, slightly, to consider the cages. Instead he was engulfed in some pages about the newest broom being developed by the Pennyapple family. The aerodynamics were on point and he couldn't pull his eyes away from the pages almost as if they were pasted to his pupils. So engrossed was he that he ran into a table on his way up the eye. Stumbling he caught himself with is left hand keeping the magazine safe from being ripped or thrown onto the floor. Thankfully he was quick enough to keep himself from falling completely towards the floor, "Merlin's Beard!" Chuckling at himself Ferris straightened his arm lifting him back into an upright position. With a bit of embarrassment and flushing flooding to his tanned cheeks, Ferris attempted to play it off to a group of cute girls, "Ruddy tables come out of no where, you know how it is." Hopefully his skills on a broom could counteract the apparent lack of swiftness of foot. With a slight bow he took a seat at the very desk he had slammed into and spread his magazine out over the cool black workspace going back to the article before class was scheduled to start. If he had any luck he could read the whole piece and start another before Professor Pratt started with his presentation. The first class of the year, though, would probably be a bit more mundane. Not that there was anything particularly wrong with monotony, but sometimes a bored Callum Knight was an annoying Callum Knight. Still, he could hold out hope that maybe things would be different this time. It was definitely possible, wasn't it? He certainly hoped so.On his way through the halls, he quickly adjusted his uniform and ran a hand over his short hair. As much fun as dangerous classes could be, they were often messy. Herbology and potions were both often messy as well. Callum was not very fond of getting into a mess. He took great pains to keep his appearance looking in tip top shape, and was agitated when classes got in the way of that. Especially if he didn't have time to clean himself up in between.Stepping into the classroom he arched a brow at the cages and then looked at everyone who had gathered. Two Puffs and a bird, but not the tolerable kind of bird, of course not, it never was. He sneered at them all before choosing a seat distinctly separated from those gathered. Callum had no desire to sit around with incompetent fools, especially in a class like this one. Besides, if he sat off by himself, perhaps if more desirable company came in, he could find a better person to sit beside. Maybe even the sort of person who would snicker with him at the idiots in the room. There was major interest in the items on the desk, even if everyone knew the first class was generally a warm up. Getting back in the groove of classes and being around tons of other students ranging in ages, Students could feel overwhelmed if they were thrown right into large projects off the bat. At least that was how Dexter felt when he chose his topic for the first class carefully. Class would start as soon as everyone was settled. It seemed that even though it was their second day of the term people were still getting lost or trickling in at a slugs pace to their courses. What happened to the sense of urgency he knew growing up in Hogwarts? Maybe it was a generation thing, he could never be sure.“Good afternoon, Professor Pratt! What’s in the cages? Nothing too dangerous, I hope. But I know you’ll keep us safe if it is!”Chuckling Dexter gave Mysti a nod, "Nothing too dangerous yet you mean." Mysti was a bright student who continued to keep his classroom entertaining for the most part. Students like her were rare, which was a shame. Why the thirst for knowledge wasn't as it was back in the day. Dexter caught himself in silent reverie of his past years and suddenly felt far too old for his own good. "Though I think you all will enjoy the topic." Giving a nod to Sasha as he entered he looked about to observe the rest of his class as it entered.Grabbing up the parchments on his desk he headed towards the students he saw were in their seats. The papers had a few spaces for notes. Handing the papers to Mysti he looked about, "Would you be so kind as to pass these out Miss Ketteridge?" Observing his daughters friend Ferris with a Quidditch magazine he rolled his eyes. Things never seemed to change. "You will be working in groups today," he said with a smug smile, "Need to get the blood flowing and be ready for the rest of term so don't get too comfortable in those seats there folks..." There was a look shot over to Callum who seemed to try and avoid contact with anyone in the classroom, it seemed the lines that were drawn in the sand long ago and stood true to this day.Creature:Habits:Characteristics:Observations:Small Sketch:Once the papers were handed out he could begin, those who came in after would just miss the unveiling. Why did she even wear this outfit today? It was RED. She was most certainly a Ravenclaw, not a Gryffindor. But Beatrix wanted to impress Professor Bombay, and she believes she will once she gets out of Care for Magical Creatures... The thing is, she was late for that class. Beatrix took another giant leap before opening the door and seeing her fellow classmates in front of some cages. Oh my..."Sorry I'm a bit late, Professor Pratt!" Beatrix immediately began to apologize and took a seat next to Mystique. "I had to- Um..." She paused, pulling her notebook out of her bag, "I had to fight off a dragon! Who was... Um... They deflected magic! So I had to wrestle it!" She smiled, brightly, at her excuse. "And then I pulled out a sword! And it was all... BOOM! POW! NYYYOOOWWW!~ Intense. It was intense." Bea nodded, quickly, "Mysti was there, too. In spirit. She even had a go with it." She was finally done and set up with her belongings. It wasn't common for Bea to be late to class, but she had a couple of tricks up her sleeves. If Pratt didn't believe that excuse, she'd probably tell him the truth, that she was yelling at some kid for knocking into her and touching her prefect badge."What's in the cages, anyways?" Bea added after a brief pause of staring at nothing, "I'm guessing it's the bits and pieces of the dragon that I fought off." Skip to next post Re: [Sept 2] Animals and children tell the truth, they never lie [Fifth Years] Reply #7 on November 01, 2009, 01:15:52 AM OutfitMaddie couldn't believe that she was actually late to a class, let alone one taught by her own father. Not that he had much to teach her that hadn't been pounded into her head growing up, but Maddie knew that it would look horribly disrespectful for her to be late like that. The other students might accuse her father of playing favorites, or they might assume that they too could be late. She didn't want either to happen because of her. So she ran like hell. She made it to class just in time to see her father handing papers to Mystique. She spied Ferris and quickly made her way to his side. She knew better then to think that her father wouldn't see her sneak it, but at least she didn't want to make a big deal out of it. Sidling up to Ferris, she took a seat. "What did I miss?" She whispered to him, setting up her stuff quickly. "About bloody time you show up! To think late to your own father's class" he snickered low knowing full well that Dex...err Professor Pratt wouldn't hesitate to scold his daughter or her friends if they disrupted his class. There had been plenty of times he should have been scolded in other classes, and got away with it that Professor Pratt would drag him aside after class to have a discussion about. The class was fun, it didn't mean he couldn't mind his 'Ps' and 'Qs'. "Didn't miss much... apparently we can't get too comfortable." Ferris looked around the classroom curious who he was going to have to work with. Eyes falling on Callum he shuddered disliking the bloke from the word go. Slytherin's seemed to think that the school owed the something, if it wasn't for the ruddy pin on his chest Ferris would gladly owe some of them a bloody lip. Skip to next post Re: [Sept 2] Animals and children tell the truth, they never lie [Fifth Years] Reply #10 on November 08, 2009, 06:02:16 PM Adrienna was not typically late for classes, as she very much enjoyed going to most of them, but today, she had been moving slightly slower than was normal for her. In fact, she barely made it out of bed this morning. Still, she managed to eat breakfast rather rapidly and put on makeup just as she normally did. So, a bit out of breath, she shot into the classroom, where several other fifth years had already gathered. Luckily, Professor Pratt was not looking as she slipped into the room and took a seat in the nearest desk. Frazzled, she placed her things beneath her desk and looked around the room for the first time. First of all, she had managed to sit by possibly the most judgmental Slytherin in the entire school, Callum Knight, who looked rather irritated at her sudden burst into his personal space.::Crap:: she thought as she glanced at him behind her lashes.Trying to ignore her off-balanced seating intuition, she looked at the other people in the room. She saw Sasha Schlagenweit, Madeline Pratt (daughter of the professor), Mysti Ketteridge, Beatrix Dark, Ferris Quinn-Nightwing, and then sitting directly behind her was Josh Harcroft.Suddenly, she really wanted to move and sit with him (as he was the only one with a vacant seat), but she was afraid Callum would drag her back and force her to sit with him, just for the enjoyment of making her suffer. Before she realized it, her legs were turned into the isle, and she was sitting on the edge of her seat, debating on what to do. Skip to next post Re: [Sept 2] Animals and children tell the truth, they never lie [Fifth Years] Reply #11 on November 08, 2009, 11:29:06 PM Though his attention was elsewhere, Dexter was keenly aware that his daughter was late to his course. It wasn't like Madeline was purposely doing it, knowing her she was caught up with something before class. This of course did not excuse the tardiness and he would be having a conversation with her afterward."While Mysti passes out the opening activity I suppose it's time to unveil the topic of your first class." Striding back to the two cages covered in the clothe he lifted them simultaneously revealing under one side several fairies and in the other cage a group of imps. The two were there for entertainment of the masses, something not too hard to focus on. Granted he was playing up on the fact that girls loved fairies and he knew imps would interest most boys, it was playing to the strengths.Looking at the groups he took in a deep breathe, "Now I want you folks to pair off with folks of a separate house and work on a paper together. Pick one of the creatures before you and fill out the descriptions. After that I will chose a couple groups to present their findings before releasing you back to your own devices," Dexter chuckled as he watched the fairy folk fluttering about the cage looking at the many mirrors he had attached to the bars. Fairies loved to look at themselves. Vain creatures were easy to deal with it was the mischievous imps he had to keep a close eye on. "Alright now off your duffs, get about and mingle this will not be a class you remain seated in so don't start now" he decreed looking for a place to make checks on his own piece of parchment. Skip to next post Re: [Sept 2] Animals and children tell the truth, they never lie [Fifth Years] Reply #12 on November 09, 2009, 07:15:55 PM Just as Adrienna was getting comfortable, Professor Pratt stood up, ”While Mysti passes out the opening activity, I suppose it’s time to unveil the topic of your first class.”Adrienna spun back around in her seat, though perhaps not quite as far as she could have considering Callum was sitting less than a foot away. She watched as Professor Pratt walked over to the large cages that sat as the front of the room. As the sheets fluttered to the floor, Adrienna could see tiny creatures whizzing about inside. The one on the left contained little flying things that, at first glance, resembled large bumblebess, but looking at them a bit harder, she realized that the “bees” had miniscule limbs and shiny dust fell gently from their wings. She quickly deduced that these creatures must be fairies, and the magical animals in the other cage, slightly larger, were imps.”Now I want you folks to pair off with folks of a separate house and work on a paper together. Pick one of the creatures before you and fill out the descriptions. After that I will chose a couple groups to present their findings before releasing you back to your own devices… Alright now off your duffs, get about and mingle this will not be a class you remain seated in so don't start now.” Well Adrienna didn’t know exactly how many people they were supposed to pair off into, but she definitely knew she didn’t want to remain in her seat. Thus, she quickly scampered to the desk behind her, next to Josh.“Wanna be my partner?” she whispered, making a face and jabbed a finger in Callum’s direction. He didn't know her all that well, though he was fairly sure they could be friends if they got to know each other." sure Adrienna, I'll work with you." Josh replied, then bent over the sheet him and Adrienna would be filling in.OOC: this is befroe the Josh/Adrienna open thread, that's why he says they don't know each other too well. They don't. Watch the fairies and imps for a moment, then jot things down about them. She could do this without a problem, though she reminded herself to include Josh in the worksheet also. “I know that the ones on the left are fairies and the ones on the right are imps,” Adrienna said quietly. “But beyond that, I’m not totally positive of anything else.”OOC: Josh – Ah, I see. Re: [Sept 2] Animals and children tell the truth, they never lie [Fifth Years] Reply #6 on October 29, 2009, 03:19:59 PM [Outfit]Tripping every other step in her heels, Beatrix Dark was late, yet again, for her class. If Pratt didn't believe that excuse, she'd probably tell him the truth, that she was yelling at some kid for knocking into her and touching her prefect badge."What's in the cages, anyways?" Bea added after a brief pause of staring at nothing, "I'm guessing it's the bits and pieces of the dragon that I fought off." Skip to next post
Re: [Sept 2] Animals and children tell the truth, they never lie [Fifth Years] Reply #7 on November 01, 2009, 01:15:52 AM OutfitMaddie couldn't believe that she was actually late to a class, let alone one taught by her own father. Skip to next post
Re: [Sept 2] Animals and children tell the truth, they never lie [Fifth Years] Reply #8 on November 05, 2009, 02:48:56 PM When Maddie popped in he perked up. Skip to next post

Re: [Sept 2] Animals and children tell the truth, they never lie [Fifth Years] Reply #10 on November 08, 2009, 06:02:16 PM Adrienna was not typically late for classes, as she very much enjoyed going to most of them, but today, she had been moving slightly slower than was normal for her. Skip to next post
Re: [Sept 2] Animals and children tell the truth, they never lie [Fifth Years] Reply #11 on November 08, 2009, 11:29:06 PM Though his attention was elsewhere, Dexter was keenly aware that his daughter was late to his course. Re: [Sept 2] Animals and children tell the truth, they never lie [Fifth Years] Reply #12 on November 09, 2009, 07:15:55 PM Just as Adrienna was getting comfortable, Professor Pratt stood up, ”While Mysti passes out the opening activity, I suppose it’s time to unveil the topic of your first class.”Adrienna spun back around in her seat, though perhaps not quite as far as she could have considering Callum was sitting less than a foot away. Skip to next post
Re: [Sept 2] Animals and children tell the truth, they never lie [Fifth Years] Reply #13 on November 09, 2009, 07:24:46 PM Josh watched as the Imps were unveiled. Then Adrienna climbed into the seat next to him.he was slightly surprsied, but didn't show it. They don't. Re: [Sept 2] Animals and children tell the truth, they never lie [Fifth Years] Reply #14 on November 09, 2009, 08:18:11 PM “So… we just fill this paper out?” Adrienna asked, though it was mostly to herself. Oh, she was never good with first impressions…She looked at it.Creature:Habits:Characteristics:Observations:Small Sketch:It was simple enough.
