Physical Description: Fergie (as he prefers to be called) is an inch or two shorter than the other boys his age. Not having any desire to be a bean pole like his older brother, this suits him. Being an extremely picky eater as well as being image obsessed means that his figure is kept nice and trim. His fair skin holds a light dusting of freckles and has a tendency to get a bit splotchy when he is in the grip of strong, negative emotions. When he blushes, it comes up in bright pink patches on his cheeks.
He has medium brown hair with just a hint of red in it, when it's caught by the sun. It's kept short enough to stay out of his eyes, and parted to one side. He only uses expensive, top-of-the-line shampoo and conditioner, so that it is kept silky smooth and tangle free.
Fergie's face is oval shaped, with a weak chin and a very slight dimple in his right cheek. He has a very pleasant, charming smile when he feels inclined to share it with the world, but generally her wears a rather smug smirk instead. He has a somewhat wide pug nose, which he hates and hopes to someday have magically altered. So far, however, he has not been able to talk his parents into this and has given up hope of having anything done about it until he is a fabulously successful adult. His eyes are a light, blue-grey, and he sometimes wears just a hint of clear mascara, to make them really
pop.
Personality Description: First impressions are extremely important. People can say otherwise all they want, but Fergie knows that it's just a fact. Everyone makes
some kind of snap judgment upon their first meeting of you. Personally, Fergie wants
his first impression to be a good one. So he is very particular of his outward appearance, and very critical of that of others. He believes in dressing well and looking good - and likes to think that he pulls this off with minimal effort. It's a gift. Everyone has one. His is having impeccable taste.
Fergie is definitely not a dunce. He is an intelligent young man, and while he doesn't have a
whole lot of interest in school work, he knows a good education will come in handy later in life. He doesn't shirk where homework is concerned. He prefers classes that involve wand work, as he is quite adept at that. His favorite classes are Charms and Divination, both of which subjects he seems to do best at. Herbology and Potions are his least favorite. He once accidentally blew his eyebrows off in potions class, due to a mixture gone awry, and ever since has abhorred the class.
Although he will avoid a physical fight if at all possible (he knows he lacks athletic prowess of any kind, and would be sure to get creamed), he has no objection to engaging in a battle of wits. He has quite the sharp tongue when he wants to, and a tendency to be catty to those he is not particularly fond of. He has a sarcastic, snarky sense of humor that does not agree with everyone, but which amuses him
greatly.
Fergie is a goal oriented person. When he wants something, he puts in whatever work necessary to achieve it. And if he has to shove a few people out of the way on his quest? He has no problem doing so. Finders keepers, losers weepers, as the saying goes.
The young man is extremely picky about pretty much everything in life. He only eats certain foods, and would rather skip a meal than eat even a bite of something he doesn't like. He always uses the same brand of shampoo, conditioner, and various other hygiene products. He only wears one kind of cologne. He only sits in one chair in the common room (it's the most comfortable, he says, and has just the right lighting for whatever activity he is pursuing at the moment). If he runs out of something and has to use a different brand in its place, it throws off his entire day and makes him squirm.
Fergie is a bit of a suck up. He acts extremely charming towards professors and others in positions of authority, whether he actually likes them or not. The boy always acts with perfect manners around adults and pretends to be as sweet and innocent as can be. In private, however, amongst his friends, he has no problem bad mouthing the very people he'd been brown nosing earlier in the day.
History: Ferguson Everard Amherst was born one early afternoon in October to proud parents Elizabeth and Algernon Amherst. He came into the world with an eager older brother who couldn't wait until he was old enough so that they could play together. That, however, never happened. Fergie and Marmaduke never got along. Marmaduke was interested in sports and rough housing. Fergie, however, was far more delicate. He didn't enjoy wrestling with his brother, especially since he had no chance of winning, and when the chance came he chose to forgo little league quidditch in favor of dance lessons. This sealed the deal and made him pretty much despised by his older brother. Fortunately, Fergie got along much better with his little sister, Anastasia, who joined the family when Fergie was two years old. He had a lot more in common with little Stasia than he did with his brother, and the two have always been fast friends.
Elizabeth and Algernon wished to ensure that their children received the best possible education, so Fergie and his siblings were taught by private tutors as children. Although he hated the tutors, particularly the one who taught him math (a drippy little man with a ridiculous mustache), Ferguson enjoyed learning and proved to be quite clever.
Still, he was eager to reach his eleventh birthday, knowing that with it would come his acceptance to Hogwarts. Then he would escape not only his tutors, but parental supervision. Of course, this meant that he would instead be under the supervision of several professors,
and he would once more have to see his older brother every day, but it would be worth it. He hoped.
The time for him to attend Hogwarts eventually came, and the eager little boy packed up his school supplies, brand new pet owl, and personal items and boarded the Hogwarts Express. He was sorted into Slytherin, a fact of which he was quite proud, even if it
did mean sharing a common room with Marmaduke. The Amhersts had been Slytherins for as far back as could be remembered.
He had always been a bit spoiled, and was used to having his every whim catered to. For this reason, he found it a bit difficult to make friends at first. He was a bit too self-important and big for his britches. Once he learned to get along with others a little better, however, he settled in quite nicely. Like at home, he found himself with far more girl friends than boys, but this didn't bother him in the slightest.
When he reached third year, he and Marmaduke were joined at Hogwarts by their younger sister. Anastasia was also sorted into Slytherin, which made Fergie quite happy. Now he had a sidekick for his schemes and adventures, and a protégé to groom into the perfect little fashionista. He was also now able to choose his electives, and eagerly selected Divination and Ancient Runes.
There was one draw back to entering his third year, however. It was around this time that his voice changed. Fergie had always had a pleasant singing voice, and had been involved in children's choirs growing up. Now, however, he felt that he sounded completely ridiculous, and his voice had the terrible habit of
squeaking! (Eventually, of course, that ironed itself out, and although his voice is not particularly deep, it is decidedly more mature than it once was.)
His fourth year passed without anything particularly interesting happening, save his brother's graduation at the end of it. This was cause for true celebration. Finally, he would be free of his brother's presence! And, more to the point, free of his mocking. Now entering his fifth year, he looks forward to getting his OWLs over and done with, and enjoying the school year without Marmaduke's oppressive presence.
How Do You Fit Into Your House?: Fergie, like most Slytherins, believes that the end justifies the means. Who cares if he has to step on a few toes in pursuit of his goals? The main thing is achieving them. He's primarily concerned with his own feelings and desires, rather than the good of others. He knows whose side it is expedient to be on, and whatever his private thoughts on the person in question will treat them with sugary sweetness.
Writing Sample:Show your character in a scene that illustrates the
best and worst aspects of their personality. Include action, dialog and thought. Looking in the mirror, Fergie carefully combed his hair so it would have just the right flick to the side. It was his practice to stop at the little boy's room between classes a few times a day,
just to make sure his appearance was as impeccable then as it had been when he'd descended from his dorm that morning. This, however, was an emergency stop. Some
idiot girl child he'd been conversing with had had the audacity to rumple his hair, purposefully mussing it up!
Why she had felt the need to do so when they had been having a perfectly pleasant conversation prior to this action was completely beyond him. It was, very likely, meant to be a sign of affection of some sort, but still. Was she unaware of how hard he worked to keep it that neat? Hair didn't just grow that perfect. Oh no, honey - that wasn't how mother nature made it. It had to be coached.
Finally, he felt he could once more be satisfied with his appearance. Winking at his reflection, he turned away from the mirror and shouldered his school bag, smoothing down his grey sweater.
All right, he thought to himself,
time to go. Self-assured smirk in place, he existed the restroom and joined the rows of students walking towards the Charms classroom.
Scanning the crowd, Fergie soon spotted one of his very good friends and hurried to catch up with her, hooking his arm through hers once he did so. "Oh. My. Godric." he told her, with a long suffering sigh and exasperated eye roll. "You would not
believe what that awful Anna Jacobs just did to me. She
ruined my hair. I know!" He continued, not bothering to wait for her response. She was a smart girl, she would obviously sympathize with his plight. "I couldn't believe it either. What a witch. And
not in the magical sense. Besides, did you see the shoes she was wearing? That girl is just asking for a run in with the fashion police."
Sum up your character in one paragraph: Fergie is a catty, fashionable young man who is very concerned with outward appearances. Fashion is his main interest in life, and he often judges people based on the style of clothes they wear. He is very particular and likes things to be a certain way, and is a bit two-faced.
