    Alma Mater: Hogwarts, Hufflepuff
    Job: Auror

    Wand:
Alder wood, 15 inches, and phoenix feather core.  The varnish is worn and the wood is heavily scarred.  Archer is a very physical auror and, as a result, manages to put knicks, dings, and cuts into the wand all the time.  It would appear he is not very good at keeping up with it either, as it could use a refurbishing.  His first wand was similar, but made of holly and a bit shorter.  It was, however, destroyed during the battle of Hogwarts in 1998.

    Physical Description:
Archer is a pretty big guy, by all accounts.  At six feet and three inches tall, he could be considered one of the taller guys around and at times, it actually gets in the way.  Being so big makes movements slower and much more labored, but he seems to deal with it just fine.  He is a healthy weight for his height, though recently he feels like he’s been losing some of that youthful fitness that marked him in his younger years, and he has to work harder for it, much to his chagrin.  To go along with his almost forty (he needn’t be reminded of such terrible news), he has the crows feet to prove it and a little bit of age written across his face.

His hair is still dark as it ever was and he’s got brown eyes that tend to squint more than a little when he smiles.  Said smile is rather lopsided and cheeky, as his big smile is really reserved for when he is trying to make someone crazy.  Otherwise, he’s got more of a subdued look about him and a smile that rarely shows his teeth.  His whole appearance, on a regular day, can be very relaxed.  He walks with a steady swagger, keeps his head high and though he can be slouchy, generally has good posture.

He dresses simply, no need for frills or anything of the like, and doesn’t like anything that can get in the way.  His body is already his biggest challenge (literally and figuratively) and doesn’t think he needs excessive anything getting in the way.  Boots are standard for him, the sturdier the better, with good grip, of course.  He tends to keep a protective rune in his pocket, as it was a gift from his mother and now more of a habit than anything, and has a good watch with a dragon leather band that he wears every day.

    Personality Description:
Never one to mince words or waste time, Archer is probably a prime example of Hufflepuff grit and determination.  Though one shouldn’t be genuinely classified by where they’re from, it’s hard to imagine having placed Archer anywhere else, or by any other code.  The first point would be his hard work.  Radley has never been one to slack off and tackles every problem with every resource he can find.  Problems are usually intense for him and he tries his best to solve them quickly and efficiently, of course, most of it has to be done by foot.

Archer really has trouble with doing things out in his head, he has to see them and feel them, grounded in a very visual and physical understanding of everything that is going on. That approach to the world always made him a great athlete (he could still fly with the best of them… his age, anyway), and even better at physical magic, like defense and herbology, things to use one’s hands for.  Naturally, he chose defensive magic over herbology and magical creatures because it was cooler, but those were his three main courses at Hogwarts.  Concentrating so much on physical cues, his social skills have always suffered as a result, and he tends to forget to think about things before saying them, or just not saying it at all.  He tends to know when something will go wrong though, and can keep his mouth shut at the appropriate times in the right environment.

There’s an ingrained sense of loyalty and right versus wrong in Archer as well.  He knows what he believes in and adheres to the moral code he thinks it is right.  This is very much in line with the job he has chosen to dedicate himself to, and as an auror, he’s not going to disobey orders or make problems.  He’d rather work within the constraints than outside of them, making for a cleaner solution – and less paperwork.  He’s never been very good with papers, particularly letters and numbers.  Memorization is one thing, but writing is another entirely.  He tolerates it and can do it, but prefers the more physical aspects of the job, glad that he hasn’t been approached for advancement as that would only increase the need to deal with that aspect of the job.

Surprisingly, Archer is the kind of auror who, though he likes the physical work, would probably prefer to talk it out than resort to action.  Those that rush too fast into anything usually end up hurting people, and that’s the last thing that Archer wants out of his job.  He joined the aurors to stop criminals, not create a reason for violence in the name of law.  Outside of work, he’s pretty much a laid back guy and enjoys spending his time as casually as he can.  Work is intense, so his personal life isn’t going to echo that.  He is too devoted to his work and puts off everything else when work calls.  Thus, not only does he still live alone, but his sink hasn’t stopped leaking since 2003.

To relax, he likes to listen to quidditch games and is a fierce Puddlemere United supporter and play wizarding poker while enjoying a fire whiskey or two.  Archer is very typical in that respect and is also very messy.  He doesn’t keep his flat organized at all, partially because he seldom thinks about it, and when he’s at home, he’d rather relax than worry about cleaning.   He also tends to make light of situations that aren’t related to work.  His coworkers, however, are not free from his quips, jeers, and snarky comments that he feels are necessary to make when they aren’t doing anything of import.  Even his superiors, at times, are the targets, though there is no malice intended, quite the opposite, actually, true respect means that he’s not afraid to say what he wants around them, even if it’s not the most convenient thing to say… Getting back to those diminished people skills.

    History:
There is nothing very spectacular about being born in the early seventies, except perhaps the connection to many a love-loving, plant connoisseur; however, not even that was attached to young Archer Radley.  Both of his parents were normal, as far as witches and wizards go, and did not have too much going on outside of having a fairly successful business, the Green Goblin, a pub in their sleepy little town.  Neither of them were particularly ambitious as students and in their sixth years, decided they did not need to complete school for what they wanted.

They got married young and decided to move back to Justin’s town, Piddlehinton, a relatively small muggle community with a larger wizard base away from the center of the town.  In the sleepy little village, they were able to set up a little operation, renovating a pub and putting it back to business.  It was lucky for them that they were able to push through the beginning phases, as it wasn’t, initially, a lucrative business investment, but they managed.  In fact, they actually made quite a bit of money off the pub once it got off its feet and became a favorite for Puddlemere fans to come and listen to the games on the radio.

It was in this largely social, but small community that Archer Radley was born.  The first of three children, Archer was a typical first born. Joel and Hunter, the two younger brothers, adored their older brother, but were six and seven years younger than him, respectively.  So, Archer grew up very alone for most of his young childhood.  However, just because he didn’t have siblings didn’t mean he didn’t have others around.  The wizarding community was small and he was given his first ride-on broom when he was three and a half years old.  During that summer, Benjamin Colburn was home from Hogwarts and thought that he could spend his time teaching Archer some quidditch.

Granted, it was for money (babysitting wasn’t exactly what Benjamin wanted to call it), and Archer was thrilled to get some quidditch knowledge.  He would claim he was born with navy and gold blood, of course, so this was the ultimate.  Despite the fact he could barely hold any of the balls (except the snitch, which if he let go, became an issue entirely in and of itself), he got his flying lessons and Ben actually proved to be an outstanding teacher for the young boy, and a great role model.  These lessons continued on every break, and as Archer got bigger, the lessons got more involved and finally, the student was fairly proficient, even giving Ben a run for his money sometimes.  Of course, when Ben graduated, he went to work for the Quidditch association, and Joel was born the same year.

Unfortunately, Archer could not start giving Joel lessons when he was an infant – a perplexing idea for the young man.  He wanted so much to have a sibling to play with now that his older friend was gone, but his baby brother could burp and spittle, not very exciting.  Archer continued to practice and hone his skills alone while waiting for his baby brother to grow up.  Then, the next year, Hunter was born to the pair and the three brothers were a finished trio, naturally, the younger two couldn’t do anything yet, but Archer was looking forward to a time when they could.

Unfortunately, he didn’t get much time with his brothers before he left for Hogwarts, at least not fun time.  Archer went right into the environment and was an avid quidditch fan from the start.  He was disappointed he couldn’t try out, but he knew that from Ben.  Flying lessons were exceptionally easy and he was more than talented for a first year and when he couldn’t play, he went to every game, regardless of the house playing and watched, obsessively.  He had to know everything and he kept up with the national and international quidditch circles too.  While he was doing his homework, he would listen to the wireless, scribbling away whilst listening to the announcers describe every dive and hit.

When he would come home, he spent a lot of time with his brothers.  He liked to let them know things, he liked to display the knowledge he had, particularly about magical creatures and plants, considering he couldn’t show them wand magic, as it was illegal. They begged their parents for puffskeins, which they got one of, and, much to their parents’ pleasure, it actually drastically reduced the amount of tissues bought over the year.  Archer didn’t have a passion for those pursuits though.  He was good at them, but he liked dueling, he liked learning how to use his wand and he especially liked quidditch.

As soon as he could, he tried out for the Hufflepuff team as a beater.  He was growing into quite a big boy, it was obvious from even when he was young and he had a lot of power in his limbs that could be used for a punch in the team.  He definitely delivered, and while he was doing this, he was still working on his school work, of course.  Unlike his parents, Archer always felt like there was more to do than run a wizarding pub hub.  He didn’t want that, and for a long time, he thought he could earn himself a place on Puddlemere, with his heroes, the team he had been following since infancy.

His years at Hogwarts progressed like they should, without much incidence and when he went home, he started teaching his brothers quidditch, when they were old enough to get their own brooms.  Of course, their older brother dwarfed them and they all have many war stories from these times, but around his sixth year, those quidditch dreams were fading.  Sure, he was a good player, he was someone who could do what he had to do, but he didn’t really know if he was skilled enough, especially when he got wholloped upside the head with a bludger.  It shook him and his confidence, as well as broke his arm when he fell from the sky.

He needed a back-up plan.  He decided he wanted to pursue a career that would be worth doing something, worth making his life.  It had always been a problem, perhaps inherited from his parents, but he wanted to know that what he was doing in school was going to amount to something greater than being a quidditch star.  His brothers looked up to him after all, and professional quidditch didn’t have a long career span as far as careers went, and he’d have to become a big shot to actually live off of it.  He didn’t think he had the technical skills to do that, he was too big, and though he worked with it, he had to figure out something else.  Doing some research (a rare uninterrupted and quiet evening without a wireless), he came upon the idea of auror.

A lot of students buzzed about the idea, but not anyone could become an auror, it was obvious that the training program only accepted the best or at least those with the potential to be the best.  Archer always tried and put his best into his work, especially the work that was physical and hands on.  He could memorize by doing and understand how a team works together and what a situation calls for, even in a tense circumstance.  He had a lot to offer and when he finally expressed serious interest, it took a little to catch up, but he was a hard worker.

His game suffered a little as a result, but that didn’t stop a minor team from enquiring about him.  He turned them down though, probably one of the hardest decisions he ever made and was only too glad to hear that he had been accepted into the Auror training program.  It was the beginning of an amazing career experience and when he told his parents, they were nervous but happy for him.  They had never thought their son would want to go into law enforcement and with two younger sons who adored their oldest brother, they weren’t sure how many would actually try and go into that work.  His younger brothers were absolutely enamored with the idea though, and they were excited.

Archer went about the beginning of his training right away.  He was respectful and quiet, doing what he was told and studying more than he had ever studied in his life.  He was glad that most of the work turned physical and he was doing some of the best work he’d ever done.  The young man completed training and found a place to live more centrally located than his family home, really severing the ties between them.  Though he visited, he needed his own place to study and unwind, to be able to get away from the noise.  A home above a noisy pub was never the ideal place for him to pursue his career and he had no intention of giving up.

He was very committed to the work he was doing and through the nineties did whatever he could to apprehend the dark wizards that were resurfacing.  He was also helping with the other new recruits at the time.  Once one passed through the program and started working, it was nice to reach out to the newbies, and even during training, those entering the program.  He made a lot of friends that way and in many circumstances; it kept him going through the tougher times, particularly when losing a friend.  It wasn’t a very regular occurrence, at least not for most of his career, but as the war escalated, it became blatantly obvious that there were going to be losses that no one had even dreamed of.

For a long time he struggled with his sense of duty, respect for authority, and what was going on.  It became blatantly obvious that the best interests of all were not being kept in mind as time went on and there was only so much that Archer could tolerate.  He was a halfblood, born of two halfbloods from a very magic community, so he didn’t have anything to hide from, really, but he did have friends who did, and perhaps that was where the Hufflepuff loyalty and dedication really came out.  His official record from the period of the second war is not generally spoken about.  It is full of marks for inability to follow orders and he was even put on probation for a time.  Of course, finagling the inefficiencies of the bureaucracy was a huge advantage.

For a time, he was actually taken off duty and it was one of the most paranoid times of his life.  He was forced to lay low, barely ever leaving his flat at all, and he pretty much lost all contact with his family and friends in order to try to get back into the workplace.  It was a very tense period and Archer doesn’t really talk about it either.  However, he did not let it stop him, and when Voldemort was vanquished and Shaklebolt took over, Archer could come back.  His inability to function under the last government was overlooked really, for the work he had actually been trying to accomplish and he was glad to return to actual work for what he actually wanted to do – help people rather than hurt them.

He also had the chance to reconnect with his family.  By this time, his brothers were grown up and out, starting their careers.  Joel decided that though law enforcement wasn’t for him, he certainly didn’t want to be without his share of excitement and researches dragons in Asia, more accurately, the mountainous regions of China.  Hunter, on the other hand, got bit by the Quidditch bug and was recruited as an extra for Puddlemere (much to his home town’s delight) and then, after an injury, relocated to be a Quidditch announcer, following United around.  He’s the new favorite of all in the little pub his parents still own and operate.  This keeps the brothers very separate, but they try to keep in touch as much as possible.

Since the new ministry was reinstituted and the auror office was rebuilt, Archer has been an active member of the force.  He puts forth all efforts he can, but doesn’t feel the need for advancement.  Perhaps in his older years he will be more interested in moving up and assuming a job that involves less leg work and more time in the office, but until then – he would prefer to do actual work.  After so much time being held back and having to deal with the wrong rules, it’s nice for him to be able to assume a position under the right ones.

What is your job description? How do you go about your job?
How did you get your current job? How does your past and abilities justify your current position?:

Being part of the Auror corps is not a light responsibility.  Taking in Dark Wizards was always something important and the stuff of young wizard fantasy.  The work is not all that it seems to be though.  While one does get to go out and apprehend criminals, more of the work is dedicated to making sure that who they are approaching is actually the right person to be targeting and how to go about it.  Before rushing into the more physical work, an auror has to make sure the situation he or she is going into is going to be in his or her favor.  Of course, for those times when there’s not so much preparation, there has to be a high level of intuition and understanding of magic as well as attack dynamics.

A lot of Archer’s ability actually came from playing quidditch, actually.  As a beater, he learned to constantly watch his opponents, make quick decisions, and move fast despite his body.  He was also able to work with his large frame and find out the fastest ways to fly while still being able to use the power a large body affords.  Having been captain, he was always a leader and knew how to create a game plan.  It was a rudimentary step toward becoming an auror, but it was what taught him he could be a leader and could take charge of a group of peers.  He likes to know what he’s going into and talking about it, especially with those just as informed as he is, or even smarter.  He wants to know things and work them in his favor, which comes in handy when dealing with those who don’t really care to observe the law.

In school he did very well with hands on work, and though always suffered a little in the writing and reading aspects of school, his scores were never bad.  In fact, he actually got Os in DADA, Herbology, and Magical Creatures.  It was in his other classes, potions (an E) and arithmancy (an A) that he faltered.  Thankfully, Archer’s other talents made up for his lack of abilities in those areas.  Since joining the corps, he has been nothing but a loyal employee and one willing to work for his stripes.  He uses his experience with team work as well as hands on work every day, and hasn’t given up on that since he first began.

    Writing Sample:
The one thing about being an auror anyone could hate was having a cubicle.  The grey walls boxing them in like little zoo animals, away from the rest of the world and confined to an existence of dull staring at those that walked by and occasional pacing, interrupted by the intrusion of the keeper to throw a piece of meat, or in this case, a case thrown by the ringleader, Tamis Raynor.

Taking his feet off the desk, he realized that he hadn’t seen her yet, and glancing at his watch, clearly, it was far later than he had thought and that was odd for her. Usually, she came around periodically to make sure they were working.  If she had come by today she would have found him, whilst filling out paperwork, playing snap solitaire and doodling on some old papers that were useless anyway.  It was rather entertaining for a while, but not for the time being.

He rubbed his temple and placed his hands on the hard armrests of the chair, using them to propel himself upward and into a standing position.  He wobbled for a second, his large frame adjusting to the sudden change of state, and started walking as soon as he felt comfortable.  Swaggering toward her office, he figured she was probably busy, but then again, when had that stopped him before?  Really, it was only another reason for him to come in and inject a little Archer into the office.

Being stopped by a paper plane to the face, Archer cursed under his breath and caught the thing, fumbling with it for a moment before unfolding its many folds and reading.  Instantly distracted from the previous task of trying to annoy his boss (one could never truly fully grow up) to read.  She was far too good at what she did, he noted, as he reread the note for the third time:

Don’t even think about it, Radley.

Sum up your character in one paragraph:
Archer’s not a particularly complicated guy.  He loves his work and approaches it with intensity and determination, understanding that it isn’t all about just running in and trying to dash off a few spells in the name of the law.  He’s a methodical auror and wants to make sure he does everything the right way, rather than the fastest way, often times compromising on both when the need arises.  He’s steadfast and loyal to anyone he forms bonds with as well as to the cause he signed up to work for.  In the past, he was a superb athlete and quidditch captain, learning to work with his size and also a team.  Still a quidditch fan, avid wizard poker player, and occasional goof, Archer is the guy around the office who hasn’t seemed to change, which is just how he wants it.  He has never sought advancement in the field, preferring to do what he originally intended to do, which was to be part of the force capturing criminals, rather than a desk jockey, and got through most of his career that way.  He’s a level headed auror as well and prefers to use words first, actions later, creating a balance between him and the more impulsive aurors in the corps.

    Previous Job/Position: Auror
    Position Applying For: Senior Auror

Why have you chosen to change careers?: He got promoted in game.

Elaborate on your expertise in this new field: Well, Archer has been an auror since before the second war.  He passed training with flying colors and has proven to be one of the persevering members of the corps. He has been lead on the terrorism investigation as well as played instrumental parts in several other investigations, as well.  Archer is a good leader, decent decision maker, and experienced with everything required to do his job.

Describe your new job and how you go about doing it: Archer's job has not changed all that much.  He can be the official lead of a case and take on the managing of an investigation more wholly than if he were just an auror.  Archer doesn't see much of a difference in his job and still attacks it with the same determination and grit he always has.

It is also something of a symbol in the department, which Archer resents, to a certain extent.  He doesn't really see the point, but took the promotion to follow his case more fully and be able to lead cases in the future as well.
