Louisa Edith Spokes
Character Birthday & Age: 17th April 2002
City & Country of Birth: Hogsmeade, Scotland.
Pureblood, Halfblood or Muggleborn: Halfblood
House & Year: Fifth year; Ravenclaw
Wand: 10 inch poplar wood, pliable, with a Phoenix Feather core and a notched handle. Louisa's wand is terribly loyal to her and might be temperamental in anybody else's hands. It is attuned to very fine and delicate spellwork.
Physical Description: Louisa looks younger than her years, a strange amalgamation of baby-faced and solemn. Her brown hair is wavy and long, worn loose or braided or whatever feels good on any particular day. Generally speaking, she tries not to fuss over her appearance but she may fret over such things when invited to the rare party or social gathering.
Most of her wardrobe consists of oversized woolen jumpers in traditional highland patterns, knit by her mother or grandmother. They come in many colours - mostly earthen browns and greens, although her favourite is a delicate blue that rarely gets worn because she doesn't think it suits her. Louisa likes to wear practical flannel bells skirts and loose fitting jeans. Her shoes are always well-worn and comfortable, though she loves to go barefoot when it's warm enough.
Louisa carries herself quietly, with neither aplomb nor diffidence. She loves to walk and always gives one the impression of having just come in from a long hike. While not conventionally pretty, she is accepting of her looks. Many friends and family members call her
cute - a compliment that wears out its welcome with every passing year.
Personality Description: First impressions of Louisa tend to be accurate - a slightly sullen, bookish witch with frank manners and not much charm. If you get to know her better you might detect a hidden streak of stubbornness and a slew of anxious habits. She bites her nails, picks at scabs, chews on the ends of her quills.
Due to spending much of her childhood in an infirm state, Louisa lags behind in terms of social skills and getting to know people. She was an easy target for bullies in her first years at Hogwarts, though she's gotten better at avoiding trouble and standing up for herself these days.
Louisa holds no delusions about any of this; she knows she isn't capable of ever being pretty or popular, and all she really wants is to get away with enjoying her interests and friendships.
Like any good Ravenclaw, she is devoted to her favourite subjects. Astronomy is especially close to her heart and she wishes to study as a maker of magical telescopes, after Hogwarts. It is not unusual to find Louisa clocking in more than the necessary number of hours required for her lessons, observing the heavens and putting together star charts. She can also be found working on magical puzzles and enchantments, often sent to her by family.
Louisa tries to to stick to the rules but she isn't above breaking them if there is something she really wants. Her resolve is often tested where authority figures are concerned; she finds it difficult to lie to them, and is more likely to just blurt things out in a panic.
History: Louisa Edith Spokes is the only child of Oliver Spoke's second marriage, to the witch Sabine. The small family reside in a garden cottage some ways from Hogsmeade - with just enough room for the three of them, and a guest room for Oliver's son,
Roscoe, from his first marriage.
Oliver Spoke (older brother to Obliviator
Jeremy Spokes) is post master at the
Hogsmeade Post Office, while his wife owns and runs a woollen mill that supplies several shops in Hogsmeade and Candlestick Row. He is a busy man with great love for reading, and a reasonably indulgent father.
As a little girl it was supposed that Louisa might never be able to attend Hogwarts. She had contracted dragon pox shortly after being born, which led to a very weakened constitution as she grew. It was difficult for her to run and play outdoors, and she often fell ill after being in crowds or other busy places. Much of her early childhood was spent sitting at the window in her room - reading, staring out of a telescope, listening to the Wireless.
However, her health took a turn for the better when she got to be around eight and nine years old. It was around then that she grew appreciative of long walks, finally able to explore the world around her at length. She often took trips into Hogsmeade with her father, or would hang around the mill with her mum.
HOGWARTSLouisa's Hufflepuff parents were somewhat disappointed but not surprised to discover their daughter had been sorted into Ravenclaw - she was terribly bright, in their eyes. Louisa herself was altogether ecstatic to be among like-minded peers.
Her unpracticed social skills made it hard for her to nurture intimate friendships but she got along with her classmates and generally did not have trouble finding people to partner with for projects. Louisa sometimes ran into trouble with students from other houses; awkwardness and a lack of close friends made her an easy target. She worked very hard at Defences - a subject for which she had no affinity at all - just to be able to deflect the odd slug vomiting hex and such.
As time got on, though, Louisa grew more comfortable with her place in Hogwarts and was able to socialise better. She was also very taken with her subjects, and spent the summer after her fourth year apprenticing at
Odds & Ends on Candlestick Row. It was a very exciting summer for her, meeting new people and learning the basics of enchantments.
Louisa isn't very close to her brother Roscoe, on account of their age gap, but is encouraged to write him during the term. She envies him his social acumen and gets annoyed when people point out the differences between her and her quidditch player brother. However, despite the fact that she doesn't enjoy quidditich, Louisa listens to all his games on the Wireless.
As she and her peers mature, she finds herself on shaky ground where parties or romances are concerned. Louisa wants to enjoy herself but she also finds it difficult to feel at ease in those settings. A part of her wishes she could hurry up and graduate and skip the whole 'growing up' process. It sounds awfully uncomfortable.

How Do You Fit Into Your House?: Louisa is dedicated to her studies, and takes a genuine interest in them. Like many Ravenclaws she will go out of her way to do more than what is necessary for her assignments. Knowledge is her tether to the world.
Sum up your character in one paragraph: Louisa Spokes is a bookish, somewhat awkward fifth year Ravenclaw. She comes across as passionate about her interests but it's very clear that Louisa is on shaky ground when it comes to anything outside of that. Despite this, Louisa is very much set on at least trying to enjoy the rest of her time at Hogwarts.
