Runespoors Traced to Africa

by Niobe Thursby

London - Over the summer, the Ministry of Magic has intercepted the shipments of Runespoor eggs.  And now Ministry officials believe the source of the illicit serpents to be Africa.

"We are cooperating with Ouagadougou," said Duna Gazini, Head of the Department of International Cooperation. Ouagadougou is the capital and magical seat in the African nation of Burkina Faso, where Runespoors are native.

"We have been working with them closely on trying to track the movement of the Runespoors out of their native habitat and to England," continued Gazini.

Gazini has only been with the Ministry a short time, but has provided strong connections to the continent as he himself is a wizard from South Africa.

According to Gazini, who has been working closely with Head of the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures Covadonga Gertrudis, the Runespoors arrive in the form of eggs.  The live serpents are far to dangerous to transport hatched.

"Runespoors have nasty temperaments. To try and ship them alive would be foolish," said Gazini.

In addition, the Runespoor eggs themselves provide most of the market for ingredients to dangerous potions meant to sharpen the mind.

But it is possible that once the Runespoor eggs arrive that they are nurtured to full maturity.  Mr. Gazini explains, "Sometimes, unfortunately, the eggs hatch before they can be used as potions ingredients or people buy them believing that they will be able to control such an animal and find themselves overwhelmed."

By the calculations of Madam Gertrudis, if the first of the Runespoors had arrived by early May, it is very possible that there could be fully grown Runespoors as early as July of this year. If all three heads survive during adolescence and are all sufficiently fed, the adult Runespoor can reach a length of 8 feet.
