City & Country of Birth: Tinworth, Cornwall, England
Pureblood, Halfblood or Muggleborn: Halfblood
House & Year: Gryffindor Seventh Year

Physical Description:
Heather is fairly tall, and for the last year or more, tallest in her family. Her parents suggest there must be some unknown giant blood in their family tree, to explain it. As she has grown taller, she’s remained somewhat lean, her quidditch training and youth counteracting the famously generous Hogwarts dinners.

The first thing one might notice about her face is her eyes. They are pale blue. Heather enjoys perfecting her eyeliner and mascara technique in the dormitory bathroom mirrors. There is one which likes to give tips.

Heather dislikes her natural hair colour, which is a dark blonde, and nothing terrible. When she started to become conscious of it through reading her mother’s magazines, Heather decided it was dull and boring. Her mother, used to being in the public eye, gave the usual spiel that she was beautiful, but knew the double standard given her platinum blonde hair potions in the bathroom. For much of Heather’s Hogwarts life she has sported bright blonde hair, but for the last few terms she has changed, seeking to be different to her family, or maybe not stick out so much with her gain in height. She is more often seen with long brown loose curls, though tied back in a ponytail for training or match days. For formal occasions, Heather is a dab hand at braiding her hair, through hours of practice with her younger sisters at home.

Heather’s accent is noticeably Cornish to her fellow Hogwarts students. Her phrase-endings are peppered with the word ‘like’. Back home, strangers think she’s not local at all, given how diluted it is from living away from the area most of the year. Her voice is louder than most, and carries across a classroom - which often gets her into trouble with teachers.

Personality Description:
Heather is quite an optimistic, humorous soul. She is not prone to pessimism, but will use sarcasm and imply it to poke fun. She loves to be outdoors, whatever the weather, and can be heard telling others (particularly younger students) that they won’t melt in the rain, and that they should have brought a cloak if they are cold. Yes, the Scottish climate is decidedly chillier than home, but for a girl seen taking a dip in the sea at Christmas, it’s not Siberia.

This love of the outdoors extends to Heather’s studies and pursuits. She enjoys herbology, care of magical creatures, flying, quidditch, gobstones, walking, snowball fights, climbing trees, swimming and is forming a keen interest in weather spells. When she has to be confined indoors, Heather enjoys competition, such as duelling club, games and the occasional low stakes bet.

Heather is restless in theoretical lessons, and wanders off-task with writing notes, chatting, or picking holes in her parchment with the tip of her quill. Her patience and attention span for it is much shorter than most classmates. She has a tendency to ignore important details, preferring to look at the big picture. When she sits tests she will give broad statements and miss the harder marks by not paying full attention to the questions.

When posed with a practical lesson, Heather is in her element. She relishes moving around, whether waving her wand, creating seed beds or fixing fences. Often when others are exhausted at these activities, Heather is still there plugging away at it, chivvying her peers for one more go, or to finish the job.

Similarly, she throws her all into quidditch training, with dawn practice and extra training wherever she can fit it in. Quidditch is a big thing in the Abbott household, what with Heather’s mother playing professionally and now coaching. Heather has known it since she was old enough to recognise a broom, and her enthusiasm to teach others about it is infectious. Unusually, one might consider her an apt captain for the team, however Heather is unwilling to commit to such a responsibility, instead keen to be a team player as a chaser. She has secret fears of being measured up to her mother.

Sometimes Heather’s friends rue her ‘big mouth’ because Heather is not afraid to say what she thinks. She can lack tact, most likely to tell someone their outfit makes them look fat, thinking it is advice and they should know, rather than finding a nicer way to put it. However, some of her Slytherin friends find this ‘drawback’ hilarious. Equally, Heather won’t hold back if she thinks a Professor has made a mistake, though if you called her out on it, she would claim it was her wish to check her own understanding. She thinks their teachers should know their stuff, and any inability on their side to demonstrate it will lead to Heather moaning about them being rubbish with a lack of empathy. She once was sent to Professor Greyfriar’s office for calling out ‘boring’ in a history of magic lesson in second year (2007-8), which went down as a legendary moment in her year-group.

Detention is something Heather is familiar with from the first three years at Hogwarts. She was not so good at keeping a lid on her temper, and once her classmates knew which buttons to press, it was easy to get Heather to turn her humour into something more barbed.  In her third year (2008-9) she was caught exchanging spells in the corridors twice, the second time resulting in her opponent ending up in the hospital wing. This lost Gryffindor a lot of points, her final detentions and brought her to the attention of the new Defences professor.

For the most, her impish sense of humour inspires a great many practical jokes. The most famous was the tickle war of fourth year (2009-10), where the aim of the game was to use the ticking charm on another student when they least expected it. Lessons were off limits, along with anything similar like quidditch matches, but the most of the day was fair game. It was not unusual to see a fourth year tearing down the corridor to avoid being hit with one or squirming on the floor while crying with laughter. A cease-fire was declared ahead of their end of year exams, and the impending doom of OWL exams the following year put it firmly to bed.

Heather rarely means anything malicious by her jokes. She is very willing to lift spells or provide an antidote once the hilarity has been witnessed. If you have been busy talking to someone in the Great Hall and your pumpkin juice has been replaced with soup, or your missing homework has been framed on the common room wall as an exhibit, you know Heather is likely behind it.

History:
Heather was born in early winter of 1994. At the time her mother was a competitive quidditch player, and her father was frequently changing jobs, trying to find something to suit. They were unmarried, and Heather was given her mother’s surname of Abbott at his insistence. The following year they married, and all became Abbotts. As a tiny child Heather has no memory but appears in many of the wedding photos.

Her parents were both part of the resistance movement against Voldemort in the years which followed. Heather barely remembers apart from spending plenty of time with her maternal grandparents in Tinworth, a mostly wizarding community in Cornwall near the coast. It is where she grew up eventually, living a few streets away.

Heather’s childhood post war was filled with happy memories. The beach, surfing, learning to fly, rockpooling, kite flying, swimming, exploring caves at low tide. Two younger sisters joined Heather, Ivy and Cassia. Heather played the responsible older sister, using it as an excuse to climb trees “because it’s not safe, you’re too little…” and eventually show them how to do things. In the winter they would scour their mother’s magazines and practise hair and makeup with hilarious results in the beginning. Now it is taken much more seriously!

Heather was first of the three to prepare for Hogwarts. She met the experience with awe, and was inseparable from her wand. In her first year (2006-2007) she was determined to learn how to do everything with it from brushing her teeth to picking up discarded socks. It went everywhere with her, and quite frankly there was a lot of separation anxiety when she came home for the holidays until she was of age. Her parents learned quickly that it was best out of reach when the family were all at home, as Heather was too determined to practise otherwise.

Her exploits in her first few years are detailed within personality, but Heather was known amongst the staff for her loud voice, short temper and quick wand. The first few years she was outspoken and took time to comply with rules. But by the end of her fourth year (2009-2010) Heather had begun to show some maturity and responsibility, mostly channelled by Professors she respected, and friendships solidifying.

In her fifth year (2010-2011), Heather wasn’t asked to be a prefect. She didn’t meet what was needed for a quidditch captain. The school environment had other ideas for her, channelling that energy into her practical subjects and the duelling club. She was frustrated, given her friends were asked, but she shrugged it off, claiming she didn’t want the responsibility anyway. She began to work on keeping her temper, taking a long walk out of the castle to blow holes in the ground instead more than once when test results didn’t go her way, or she had a falling out with friends.

But to her surprise, and perhaps as a method of ‘giving former trouble responsibility’ she was asked to step up as a prefect in her sixth year (2011-2012) when the previous prefect relinquished the responsibility. Heather was secretly delighted, because her good friends were already prefects and this was definitely a kind of reward. However, she had her sights still set on leading the duelling club, or at the very least, winning a tournament and entering Hogwarts infamy.

OWL Grades:

  • Astronomy - Acceptable
Heather struggles to sit long enough to accurately chart stars, but she demonstrates a particular fascination for the planets.
  • Charms - Outstanding
Heather relishes the practical element of the subject, and frequently takes up opportunities to study the subject outside of lessons through the duelling club, charms study sessions or other seasonal events. She has mentored some of the younger Gryffindors under the guise of ‘sorting them out’.
  • Defence - Outstanding
Abbott frequently rises to the occasion. Shows promise at duelling club. However must keep her short temper in check as this is her greatest weakness.
  • Transfiguration - Exceeds Expectations
Heather’s strength is practical magic. She has mastered several difficult branches of the discipline but her essays lack detail and are often rushed.
  • Herbology - Exceeds Expectations
Heather has cultivated a broad range of plants this year, and had excellent working knowledge of compost and irrigation.
  • Potions - Acceptable
Abbott lacks the attention to detail potions requires. ‘I can buy these at an apothecary’ is not a suitable response to her shortcomings.
  • History - Poor
Abbott has attempted to sleep through several lessons.
  • Care of Magical Creatures - Exceeds Expectations
Heather thoroughly enjoys the subject, but should be more cautious when trying to use charms to replace the manual labour required for some of the more delicate chores with the menagerie.

How Do You Fit Into Your House?:
Heather is determined, bold and courageous - sometimes to a fault. She has great energy with her interests, mostly practical, and lacks a certain fear (or perhaps self-preservation) which is akin with Godric Gryffindor’s house.

Writing Sample:

Sum up your character in one paragraph:
Heather is a brilliant big sister and Gryffindor known for her quick wand at duelling club, for having friends across all the houses and for getting up to mischief. Despite her early years of short temper, throwing curses and talking far too loud, she has replaced another student as a prefect in her sixth year. However, Heather has other ambitions, to go down in Hogwarts infamy for duelling.

Title Request: Heather Abbott, Prefect

Character Name: Heather Abbott
Title Applying For: Prefect
Character Biography:

What Experience has Prepared You For This Honor?:
Heather would sarcastically call herself a 'reformed' student. The first three years at Hogwarts she got into more than her fair share of scrapes, detentions and lost Gryffindor a chunk of house points. She has learned the consequences of her decisions to both herself and her housemates.

During fourth year and certainly into fifth year, Heather turned a corner owed to the intervention of friends and her professors. She began seeking benefits for her better behaviour, but missed out on any leadership positions with prefect, quidditch or clubs. However, she began taking an interest in the progress and proficiency of younger Gryffindors, and has informally become a bit of a mentor. This and her focus on being very active with the duelling club has allowed her to prove she is capable, or worthy of being trusted.

What Do You Think the Most Important Aspect of This Job Is:?
"Being a role model for the younger ones. I can't be breaking rules and then expecting them to follow them, can I? Or at least, not in front of everyone. They're just going to say 'you don't' aren't they?"

Tell a Story From Your Past That Has Proven Your Mettle:
"I deserve this title because I used to be a pain in the bum to prefects my first three years, so it's payback or karma or whatever." Heather folds her arms and sets her jaw proudly. "Also everyone else is like a goody-two-shoes prefect, they're the one with the best grades and haven't really caused trouble before. I've actually worked really hard the last few years. I haven't had a detention since end of third year but nobody seems to remember that. Also someone needs to do it since the old prefect has given it up."

Heather huffs, her shoulders rise and fall. She lowers her voice...

"If I don't then, meh, I'll be duelling club captain a year early, and win the tournament trophy two years running. That's ambition, and better than prefect anyway. Greyfriar probably still holds a grudge after I told him history was boring in second year." She winks and laughs.

Title Request: Heather Abbott, Duelling Club Captain

Character Name: Heather Abbott
Title Applying For: Duelling Club Captain
Character Biography: Biography

What Experience has Prepared You For This Honor?:
Heather has always had a quick wand and a quick mouth. It got her into trouble in the first few years of school. In her fifth year (2010-2011), it was no surprise that Heather wasn’t asked to be a prefect. She also didn’t meet what was needed for a quidditch captain.

She channelled her energy into her practical subjects and the duelling club.

Last academic year the seventh year (NPC) in charge of the club was poorly with measles and then the black cat flu, so Heather and her best friend Meredith stepped up to organise things. Heather offered to organise friendly matches, tutored the younger years during meetings. They ran and refereed a duelling tournament after Remembering Day 2012. In return she had a little personal tuition from their Professor.

During the summer term of 2012 Heather focused on garnering support from other members of the club. She offered more training and practice to other students. Sometimes it backfired, there was the occasional magical accident or injury, but dueling required the odd bruise!

Heather is ambitious and successfully persuaded her parents into letting her enter and compete in the All-England Wizarding Duelling Competition in the summer holidays. She held her own despite her age and inexperience and picked up lots of tips.

What Do You Think the Most Important Aspect of This Job Is:?
Keeping order! Lots of wands and the wish to hex each other can get out of hand quick. Heather has to balance everyone's love of competition with learning new skills. She'll have a hex for people who come along just to muck about or bully someone. Otherwise it will be organising everything. That will be a challenge. But, she's up for it.
