[Mar 5] Diagnosis: Burglary

on February 20, 2021, 11:02:03 AM

"Come on! Come on!" Auror Gamp urged haste. "Urgent!" She clicked her fingers. Getting attention. Tried not to look at Gris. She might break her straight face. "Got a serious situation."

She had worked Gris hard all morning. Finding that. Fetching this. Making three cups of coffee. Stopped short of asking for a left-handed screwdriver. Then a memo came in. Too juicy to resist.

A second later Auror and trainee popped up in a tiny suburban garden. Somewhere in London. Smart terraced house. Neat flowerbeds. Green lawn. Varnished shed. Door hanging off. Wizard clutching his ginger hair. "Thank Merlin. Gamp!"

"Hericho." Introduced Andromeda. "Higgins. Higgins. Hericho." She clapped her hand on Hericho's back. Pushed her a step forward. Fighting her laughter. "Theres been a burglary."

Gris hurried along behind, Andromeda had said about if she behaved well she would take her out for a case, she'd done very well in doing her duties today in the hopes she would be able to go out for a case. However when she said there was a case, she had thought that what Andromeda really meant, was a case of beer, or some excuse to go out drinking as Gris had offered, not an actual case case, like work.

She kept a good pace behind her before the two apparated, having wanted to not get infront as she wasn't being told what was going on, just it was an serious and important case, if it was so serious then surely they would send more? Unless they were the backup, but she had grabbed some stuff in anticipation of what it might be.

She had hoped for dragons, they're adorable.

But no, they had ended up in a garden and now here she was, staring dead at a shed with Andromeda introducing her to another person. The push on her back to send her forwards caused a slight yelp from her, was she intending for her to take the lead on this? That was great and all but...

Oh no. Higgins.

She liked to humour the poor man when in the Floo network, she had met him a couple of times during her Grand Tour, but this, what was she expected to help with? Find his yellow umbrella that was once a backup prop for use in the Rhianna song Umbrella but was never used for the song itself?

"Uh..." She froze up briefly, before quickly she snapped into action, grabbing her pen and notepad she nodded.

"Right yes sorry. Good to see you again, not so good the circumstances. Can you recall the incident at all?" She tried to sound professional, with just the hint of begging for the sweet relief of death in her tone just for Andromeda.

Hericho and Higgins. This would be fun. Or boring!

"I came home and the door was hanging off." Said Higgins. Hands to his head. "I was on earlys." It was after lunch. "I looked out of the window and saw it." He beckoned them inside.

The shed was bigger on the inside. It looked like a museum. Even Andromeda was taken by surprise. At the amount of stuff.
"I knew you collected but..." She was unusually lost for words. She looked around.
"It is all unclaimed." Higgins was jumpy. "We keep it for 177 days. Publish a list every Friday in the newspaper. We call it Floo Friday..." Higgins rambled.

Andromeda stopped beside a stuffed pink flamingo and gave Hericho a look.

She wrote down what he said, a big question mark on the It. What was it? Was it a human? Was it a Wix? Was it a Monster? Was it Dancer? The sign was vital, her hands were getting cold.

She followed him inside and her eyes went wide. It was bigger on the inside! She knew magic could do that, but how was it so much bigger, and so filled with useless junk? She loved the umbrellas of various colours lined up in the way of a rainbow, it was amazing, but it seemed almost hoarding, she knew he was a collector but how often were objects abandoned in the Floo to be taken and create this big a collection? Most must of been deliberate.

She took a few seconds to calm herself down and sighed, looking at her notepad to concentrate for a few moments, she didn't need to see the tv trays, or the watch collection, if she looked hard enough there is likely several pets lost in here.

"No, your collection is...fine. There's no problems with that." She said before looking up at him again to focus.

"You said you saw It. What did you see breaking in? And is anything missing?" She asked, although how he kept track to tell if anything was missing was anyone' guess.

"It...?" Faltered Higgins. Nervous?

"Through the window." Prompted Andromeda.

"The door!" Higgins was relieved. "I saw the door hanging off." He pointed at the bent hinges. "Broke my ward spells." Runes were carved into the wood on the inside. "Yes. Something is.... missing." He beckoned them over. A big book. Hundreds of pages. A big register. Meticulously kept. Very Higgins.

"It is a mirror. But I think it was for scrying. You did not see yourself. You saw elsewhere. I thought it was a two-way mirror. But then I was called out to a malfunctioning floo. The connection had been knocked clean out. Family came out two hours later. Hundred miles away. Think it was..."

Andromeda cleared her throat. Higgins was rambling!

"I got the strongest feeling of déjà vu. You see I swear it was the same place I saw in the glass."

The book listed the details of where it was found in the floo. When Higgins had acquired it. The size.

Gris tried to keep her mind together and not to die of boredom as he spoke. It was a difficult challenge for sure but she Andromeda obviously thought it was a task she was up to. Or she more correctly thought, Andromeda just didn't want to handle this case at all and thought to pass it off onto her. She can't blame her if that was the case at all.

She jotted down as he spoke, from what she could tell, the glass could see distant locations? But wasn't a two way mirror? Atleast that seemed to be her understanding so far, she just hoped she wasn't bad with her job at the moment.

"So you don't believe it's a two way mirror anymore, and believe it can show you far off locations still?" She asked to double check with him as she looked over the book he shifted through.

"Do you know that the mirror was the only thing stolen? And does anyone else know about it? How widely spread is the information you have it." She couldn't entirely see as to why someone would go through all the trouble of hunting down where he lived and stealing only that, as much as most of the things here seemed like junk, there must be some useful objects, atleast several foe-seekers.

Higgins brightened at the fact Auror Hericho was taking interest. Although flustered he enjoyed talking about his collection.

"I do not think it is a two-way mirror at all." Informed Higgins. "Because whenever I would look in it. I would see a place. And then in days, weeks, in the future, I would be in that place. And I would feel déjà vu."

"Scrying glass?" Suggested Andromeda. "Unless the person with the other mirror wanted to lead Higgins to them." She inched her eyebrows up. As if to suggest 'who in their right mind?'

"I have not finished my inventory. But that is the first I have noted." Higgins seemed apologetic. Embarrassed more about his inventory. "A few people know. Yes. My collection is number 73 in 'weird things to see in Britain'."

He beckoned Gris to two pages of a Devis Orbis guide book framed on the wall. Entry number 72 was a wizarding toilet museum in Bath. So 73's entry began 'From flush to floo...'. 74 was a gallery of dragon paintings open every third Sunday in Hull.

"First Saturday of the month. I keep a visitor's book." Higgins wiggled his wand. Up sprang another book. This was perhaps the most amazing thing in the room. In Andromeda's opinion. People had actually visited. And were willing to write their names down.

“I...uh...see.” Gris mumbled awkwardly, it sounded like it could be a scrying glass, she agreed with Andromeda that it seemed unlikely someone would want to kidnap Higgins or lead him away, if they had wanted to, she figured that his house had less enchantments on it then his shed, he was extremely protective and proud of his collection, it was an attraction to… Some people. He would have great charms on it, possibly even hired people.

If someone wanted to kidnap him, they wouldn’t of needed a two way mirror to do so, with a nod she looked through the book, glancing off the most recent entries from visitors, partially interested in if some mentioned the tour was too long or he was...over eager in his enthusiasm. It seemed likely to her certainly.

“If someone broke in and recently, there’s likely to be a good amount of residual magic, I’m going to cast the tracking spell.” She said in half a manor of talking to herself, half in the manor of informing them, it made sense to her, it’d also hopefully reveal traces to lead them to other things stolen, or if extremely lucky, maybe body shape so they could go off of height or general shape. If extremely lucky even little snippets of the person, but she doubted that.

Andromeda nodded. Folded her arms. Watched and waited. Higgins looked from one witch to the other. Wise enough to know what the spell would do. Not to obstruct

Three sets of footprints shone brightly gold on the floor. Each leading up to where they stood now. A paler set mixed with them. From the door. Walking on the balls of the feet. Large paces. Hurrying? Andie rose to her own to see over the table of floo finds. She let Gris follow the fainter footsteps to a display case.

"That's where it was." Explained Higgins. Approaching. Gold footprints behind him. Fascinated what else Hericho's spell would show.

Gris nodded softly, before her eyes turned back to Higgins, she made her best efforts to move carefully and deliberately, light so as not to disturb or disrupt the paler fading footprints, however she was not sure he would do the same, he might step over tracks, while there was a good amount to go off of, she'd rather the scene wasn't muddled for now.

"I know it is hard, but for now can you please stay in one place, it will make following the tracks a lot easier." She tried to say delicately, she didn't want to offend him, but she thought it would be better if they had as few interruptions to the route as possible.

Her eyes moved over to Andromeda.

"Is it possible you can do something to get a size of the feet while I see if the tracks go anywhere except to the one item then out?" She asked, it wasn't much to go off of at all, but foot size is always useful as some sort of information to have if nothing else, it'll atleast narrow it down. If they got incredibly lucky, it might even be possible to guess if it was a male or female body based on movement, but she doubted that.

"I have a tape measure here." Offered Higgins. "In the shape of an elephant. Measures six of them." He reached out. Andromeda held up a hand.

"Kind offer. I am good." Crouched. Drew the tip of her wand across the footprints. One way. Then the other. Golden lines. Then a third. Then the length between them. Looked up at the ceiling. Calculated. "About size seven. Boot. Could be either gender. At least 5'3." It was a frustrating lack of accuracy but humans varied. Magic made them more! "Better luck with prints maybe."

"I'm looking for prints, but that atleast gives us something..." Even if they didn't find anything else at all, they had that, admittedly its not as if they could go off of it to hunt down the person, but it atleast narrowed down the person somewhat. So out of some seventy million, it may now be around eight million suspects.

Gris looked about for prints as she continued to follow the tracks, taking her mind away from the worst game of Guess Who, but that was neither here nor there. Following along the trail she kept an eye out for any sort of print she could copy, she personally wasn't sure on how to make spells to track fingerprints or if they had a database, but someone must know something about following fingerprints.

"I think I may of found something." She said as she saw something gold shine to the side of her, hoping it was a case of they had to grip onto something on their dash to get objects and escape.

"Capture it." Instructed Andromeda. "Get everything. Then you can discount it later. If you miss it now you have lost it." Not that she thought they had any hope in hell in finding this. Another statistic. Too many possibilities. Not enough time. Hardly a dark wizard. Palm it off to the patrol. To the artifact team. They watched markets.

She saw Gris hesitate. "You never done it?" Andromeda opened the equipment bag. It was attached to her uniform belt. Looked more like a purse. Bigger on the inside. "Accio print paper!" Thin. Translucent. Like muggle tracing paper. Andie bent down to hand it to Gris. "Press it over. Flat. It will stick." Paused so the trainee could. "Then it is Effingo infigo[1]. Like this." Andie drew a counterclockwise spiral inwards. "Do it."

"Fascinating!" Higgins was right behind them. Andromeda forced herself not to react. "There's some more right here." It sounded like he wanted a go.

"Stay put." Andromeda ordered. Grumpy. "You will muddy the trace."

"T-thanks..." She mumbled to Andromeda awkwardly, she hadn't really used it in the field and was worried about if she would get it wrong and destroy the trace, but it was still embarrassing to have her superior do it for her, like when you're trying to make your bed and your mum just does it for you with an exasperated sigh. It was sort of humiliating, especially when she had to act professional infront of Higgins...who knows how long he might talk to her after this.

She wasn't finding a whole lot else as she wandered the grounds, even with Higgins displacing himself and potentially messing up trails, she was fairly sure they had all they were going to find, unless that was just her inexperience talking in the situation.

"I'm not sure there is much left, tracks seems to stop and double back here, unless I'm just not good at tracking yet?" She said to her softly as she twirled her wand ever so slightly. "I can try to get a view from higher up and in smaller areas if I was to shift myself, but you know...cats aren't that delicate with things."

"Do not be defeatist." Andromeda instructed. Voice low. Not disapproval. But not sunshine encouragement. "The trace is not your only evidence. Duplicate the guest book. Ask your only witness some questions of the recent names. You know he has an eye for detail." She tilted her head. A prompt to get to.

"No luck?" Higgins asked. Disappointed.

Andromeda did not reply. Recast appare vestigium. A golden shower of light spilled from her wand tip. It glittered on the surfaces. Just as it had for Gris. But this time Andromeda held her wand to her shoulder above the footprints. Revealing the ghost of a figure.
