And They're Off!

by Cornelia Crabtree

A wizarding community in Gloucestershire have been taking bets on a race - but this race is unlike any other in the country. These wizards have been betting on bowtruckle to win their galleons. The specially designed racecourse, which was built by Solomon Duckdown [63], a lifelong resident of the community, had a glass roof over it to ensure the creatures couldn't escape. Mr. Duckdown himself commented on his creation. "I had to charm the wood, to ensure that the bowtruckle couldn't furrow their way through and out into the open air." he chuckles. "The people of this village have been racing flobberworms for centuries, but we decided this year to spice things up a little."

Traditionally, the flobberworms were enticed with lettuce to make them move, but the inhabitants of the village argued that the race lasted too long with these creatures, the longest race taking place in 1942 and lasting four weeks and five days. This
is the first year in the 321 year history of the race that a new creature has been used, and bowtruckle were chosen for their speed when enticed with fairy eggs. Race organiser, Bertram Goldthorn [56] stated that this does not mean that bowtruckle will be used every year from now on. Speaking after the race, hestated "We are very interested to explore different creatures, to ensure the maximum enjoyment of spectators but also the safety of all those involved." This comment comes after Mr. Goldthorn himself was forced to nurse a nasty gash in his hand by one of the bowtruckle in question.

Perhaps the Ministry of Magic should look at this as the new alternative to the tri-wizard tournament - racing magical creatures.
