Ollivander’s. There are scale patterns carved around the base. Old, cherished, retains its original colour.

Appearance

Shoulder-length hair with sideswept fringe, usually fiery orange-red. Choppy ends. Her hair may have one entire lock curving upwards, but is usually straight, and frames a squarish jaw. She stands about 5’06.

She comes off as energetic, perky, bright and cheerful. Her eyes are green with hazel limbal rings. Her lipstick colours usually range from bright reds and pinks to oranges. She also wears eyeshadow when not at work, ranging from complementary pinks, purples and oranges. Sometimes she wears them like warpaint.

Loves dragonskin jackets and graphic tees, spaghetti straps, and shirts tied at the midriff. Trousers include ripped jeans, all kinds of shorts and slim denim trousers. She favours fingerless gloves and likes to pair neutral colours with splashes of bright colours. Overall her image deliberately invokes a boyish punk look.

She is a metamorphmagus, but only changes her hair colour frequently. She doesn’t remember what her real hair colour is.

Personality

Lyra is bouncy, excitable, energetic and extremely cheerful most of the time. She greets people with great gusto, rattles off words very quickly and in general loves socialising and meeting new people. Everything about her is passionate and alive. She maintains being polite the entire time and may come off as oblivious if insulted or despised, but mostly takes in stride and treats it like water off her back, unless she has reason to respond seriously. When she gets carried away with her conversation topics she tends to gesticulate wildly and usually needs an interruption to stop her or slow her down.

When she’s serious, she speaks slower (but still fast enough to move from point to point), asks lots of questions to ensure that she’s getting something right, and generally slows down her bouncy rate so that people can keep up with her. Her sheer energy can be a little too intense that people are left breathless with how fast she moves from conversation topic to conversation topic, and she is aware of this.

Since she has a natural affinity for animals she often approaches animals with a lot of confidence to the point of too much of it; she’s toned this down a little, but often has to stop and remind herself before she loses something. Since she has a protective streak about her, she’ll always leap to the defence of people without hesitating, with very little regard for her own personal safety.

Despite her love for makeup, fashion and her appearance, she’s a proper tomboy. She expresses affection and familiarity with physical action (high fives, hair ruffling, slaps on the back, light punches to the shoulder), hardly bats an eyelid to casual swearword usage and her overall behaviour makes her come off as prominent and dominating in any group. She may not be tall, but her presence can be described as ‘big’ and occasionally may make people feel smaller compared to her. She has a guilty pleasure relationship with brandy.

On a personal level, she is bubbly, considerate, compassionate of others’ feelings and always looks out for people.

Her Patronus is an eagle. She hates being called Florentina or any name derived from it and will threaten to punch people if they insist on using it. Her mother only uses it when she needs Lyra's attention (or to stop her talking too much in a serious situation).

History

Despite being born to the Avery family, one of the Sacred Twenty-Eight pureblood families of Britain, she never supported Death Eaters or the Dark Arts. Instead she enjoyed learning magic of all sorts, expressing wonderment at the world at every twist and turn. She was into learning all kinds of magic, but if she could afford it she never used spells that would hurt someone unless in self defence. This compassion extended to animals.

At Hogwarts she was sorted into Slytherin the moment the Hat touched her head. She very quickly became known as an oddball Slytherin, being open to students of other Houses, making friends with every person she could reach out to and trying everything out as much as she could. Eventually she mellowed out a little and toned down her bubbliness and energy when around people she’s not too familiar with, but can be touchy-feely with her close friends.

By her third year she was in Magical Creatures and Astronomy Clubs as well as being a Chaser on the Slytherin Quidditch team.

Though Lyra was no overachiever, she excelled well in Care of Magical Creatures, Potions, Astronomy and Charms. She wanted to take Muggle Studies but her pureblood family refused to allow her to take the subject; she went into Study of Ancient Runes instead.

It was in Charms where she met Arcturus Hollingbury and they became fast friends over the subject. This helped both of them greatly in later years, as Arcturus would ask her for help on Care of Magical Creatures. She would later meet Sebastian Cheverell, who was enamoured with her skills on the Quidditch pitch, and Demarcus Bradley, who was a fellow Slytherin. All four became friends together and helped each other in school. She was usually emotional support, but led the group in making level-headed decisions and reining the boys in when they needed it.

Lord Voldemort’s rise to power saw her plunge into troubled times. Being an Avery she was expected to support Death Eaters and using the Dark Arts, if at least sympathise with the pureblood movement. Lyra never agreed with it, stating that she was friends with purebloods, halfbloods and Muggleborns alike, and supporting Voldemort would betray all of them. This led to her facing much ridicule from some of her less savoury Slytherin housemates, but her friends supported her decisions (except for Demarcus, who slowly distanced himself from her).

It was during the Battle of Hogwarts where she would go on to rescue Arcturus alongside Sebastian and save him from death by getting him to Madam Pomfrey. Unfortunately the pressure the Avery family faced from getting members of their family thrown into Azkaban for their crimes meant that Lyra was being lumped in with them whether she liked it or not. Shortly after the fall of Voldemort, she and her mother left for Germany where she picked up an internship with the German Ministry of Magic in the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures.

She discovered she had an affinity for magical animals, and thus began to work in this field. Her training took her into the Black Forest and helping to take care of European dragons, which was her first introduction and she very quickly fell in love with taking care of the magnificent beasts.

Because she had to travel extremely frequently, she could never give a firm address for Arcturus to send her letters. However, Sebastian Cheverell contacted her years later when she was in Austin, Texas, working as a wildlife researcher at a magical national park - he had become a successful Cursebreaker for one of American’s major wizarding banks and wanted to rekindle old contacts with her once again. It was during her meetings with him that he asked her out on a date, and on their first date derided Arcturus, mocking their old friend. When he asked her if she would continue dating him, she turned him down in disgust.

She continued to travel across Europe after her time in the United States, working with all sorts of magical creatures but constantly returning to the Black Forest Dragon Reserve. Her meeting with Sebastian found her wondering what had happened to Arcturus, and by chance the Reserve happened to need a magizoologist to be sent to England as a liaison. She applied for the position through the German Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures, and in 2012 travelled to England for the first time in years.

Job Duties

As a magizoologist working in a German dragon reserve and research centre, her duties include studying dragons from bones, hide and blood to going out into the field for weeks to observe them in their natural habitat. She works to help injured dragons, study their mating, hunting and social habits, and observe dragons to better understand their physiology. She lives a risk-laden life that gives her the freedom to pursue her passion of working with dragons and understanding them better. She also looks into educating others on dragons and other magical creatures, and advocates for the protection of dragons as well as sustainable obtaining of magical ingredients from them.

Expertise

Over a decade of working with magical creatures and people alike has made her at ease with both. She has acted as a researcher and educator for those interested, and has a veritable amount of knowledge on magical creatures and their quirks.

Summary

A cheerful, outgoing extrovert and an empath whose lofty ambitions include making the world a better place for magical creatures and wizardkind alike.

Special Ability Request: Lyra Florentina Avery, Metamorph

Reply #1 on September 17, 2019, 06:23:20 PM

Metamorph
Advanced (32)
Birth

How?

From birth Lyra had the ability to change her appearance. As a child she loved changing her appearance to match different animals, especially animals she particularly liked, and this continued well into Hogwarts. She would also use it to prank her mother to make herself look like her siblings, though eventually she stopped doing this.

Usage and Influence

Most of the time, she uses it to change her hair colour. She uses it for this function so regularly that she doesn't remember what her original hair colour is, though doesn't really want to find out.

At her job, she uses it to take on the features of animals to make them feel more comfortable to her presence and/or make the same sounds as them. She is far more used to animal features than human, and usually puts more detail and effort into sculpting an animal feature than resembling a person. There are some sounds she just can't make even using the ability however.

Description

She squeezes her eyes shut and concentrates to change her features. Since animal features are harder to change to than human, she needs about 10-15 minutes to acclimatise to the new structure, and only can maintain it for up to half an hour before she needs a break. Human features are easier to resemble and she can maintain that for 3-4 hours, but she needs a reference and she tends to miss out minor details.

Myers-Briggs Personality Test
Entertainer (ESFP)

If anyone is to be found spontaneously breaking into song and dance, it is the Entertainer personality type. Entertainers get caught up in the excitement of the moment, and want everyone else to feel that way, too. No other personality type is as generous with their time and energy as Entertainers when it comes to encouraging others, and no other personality type does it with such irresistible style.

Entertainers love the spotlight, and all the world’s a stage. Many famous people with the Entertainer personality type are indeed actors, but they love putting on a show for their friends too, chatting with a unique and earthy wit, soaking up attention and making every outing feel a bit like a party. Utterly social, Entertainers enjoy the simplest things, and there’s no greater joy for them than just having fun with a good group of friends.

It’s not just talk either – Entertainers have the strongest aesthetic sense of any personality type. From grooming and outfits to a well-appointed home, Entertainer personalities have an eye for fashion. Knowing what’s attractive the moment they see it, Entertainers aren’t afraid to change their surroundings to reflect their personal style. Entertainers are naturally curious, exploring new designs and styles with ease.

Though it may not always seem like it, Entertainers know that it’s not all about them – they are observant, and very sensitive to others’ emotions. People with this personality type are often the first to help someone talk out a challenging problem, happily providing emotional support and practical advice. However, if the problem is about them, Entertainers are more likely to avoid a conflict altogether than to address it head-on. Entertainers usually love a little drama and passion, but not so much when they are the focus of the criticisms it can bring.

The biggest challenge Entertainers face is that they are often so focused on immediate pleasures that they neglect the duties and responsibilities that make those luxuries possible. Complex analysis, repetitive tasks, and matching statistics to real consequences are not easy activities for Entertainers. They’d rather rely on luck or opportunity, or simply ask for help from their extensive circle of friends. It is important for Entertainers to challenge themselves to keep track of long-term things like their retirement plans or sugar intake – there won’t always be someone else around who can help to keep an eye on these things.

Entertainers recognize value and quality, which on its own is a fine trait. In combination with their tendency to be poor planners though, this can cause them to live beyond their means, and credit cards are especially dangerous. More focused on leaping at opportunities than in planning out long-term goals, Entertainers may find that their inattentiveness has made some activities unaffordable.

Entertainers are welcome wherever there’s a need for laughter, playfulness, and a volunteer to try something new and fun – and there’s no greater joy for Entertainer personalities than to bring everyone else along for the ride. Entertainers can chat for hours, sometimes about anything but the topic they meant to talk about, and share their loved ones’ emotions through good times and bad. If they can just remember to keep their ducks in a row, they’ll always be ready to dive into all the new and exciting things the world has to offer, friends in tow.
