Physical Description:
Tessa stands on the shorter side of 5’4”, with a solid build and square shoulders. She has greenish-hazel eyes, pinkish skin that tans easily in the sun, and long, dirty blonde hair that gets much lighter during the summer months. She usually wears her hair down, and often lets it grow out until it reaches the middle of her back. Her face is a little round, with full cheeks make her look a little younger than she is, a fact that she hates. Her expressive face and pale complexion make it easy to read her emotions, even when she tries to keep her thoughts to herself.
At work, Tessa tends to wear utilitarian clothing that is comfortable to move around in. When going out in her off hours, she enjoys wearing make-up and dressing up a little bit more; she savors the reactions she gets when it takes her work colleagues a moment to recognize her.
Personality Description:
Loyal and hardworking, it is easy to see why Tessa Fenneken was sorted into Hufflepuff House. Although she sometimes comes across as a little abrupt or standoffish when she meets someone new, she is outgoing with her friends and extremely protective of those that she considers as part of her circle. She loves feeling part of a team and cares deeply about her teammates, often going out of her way to try and lighten the mood at work.
At work, she has earned a reputation for being level-headed, and is good at working her way through problems. Confident in what she knows well, Tessa is quick to offer her opinions and speak up in a group setting. However, she still feels a bit overwhelmed by some aspects of adulthood, and is much more uncertain when encountering something new or when asked to step into a leadership role. She can also be slow to make a decision, especially when thrust into an unfamiliar situation where she doesn’t have past experience to fall back on.
Tessa hates the idea of unfair treatment, and is very intent on making sure that things are fair for everyone around her. If she senses that someone is being given something that they don’t deserve or didn’t earn, she often gets sulky about the perception of favoritism. She wrestles with the idea of werewolf rights: although she doesn’t necessarily hate lycanthropes and wants them to be fairly treated, she thinks that they should follow the rules to keep others safe around them. Consequently, she isn’t understanding of those werewolves that choose not to register or those that get into trouble by not taking Wolfsbane Potion.
After growing up under the shadow of Voldemort, Tessa is also extremely suspicious of the Dark Arts and anything associated with it: those who experiment with curses and other dark magic, questionable places like Knockturn Alley, and dark creatures like hags and vampires.
History:
Tessa was born to a Muggleborn father and a halfblood mother in East London. The oldest of three rambunctious siblings, she spent her childhood years alternating between shepherding her younger brothers through dangers and knocking them about the ears, as circumstances dictated.
The family’s quiet life came to an abrupt halt in July 1997 when the Ministry fell. Tessa’s father, Jonathan Fenneken, was forced to leave his job at the Ministry and go on the run. Tessa’s mother brought the children to her parents’ house, where they stayed until the end of the war. Although she was old enough to know that it wasn’t a game, Tessa didn’t really understand how the world had changed around her. Most of that year became a jumble of confusing memories, aside from one clear night sitting around the magical Wireless, when she remembers her mother breaking down in tears when her father’s name was read on a list of the recently fallen during a broadcast.
After the war ended and Voldemort was defeated, Tessa’s small family returned to their home in East London. A few years later saw her off to Hogwarts, where she was sorted into Hufflepuff House. Tessa loved everything about school: the camaraderie, the friendships, the sense of belonging. Although she was solidly in the middle of the pack in most of her classes, she excelled at Transfiguration, and also enjoyed Care of Magical Creatures because it allowed her to be outside. She loved the team aspects of Quidditch, and played Keeper on the Hufflepuff team for a few years, although she was never the best at the sport. In her seventh year, she and a couple of her friends made a pact that they would become Animagi; although Tessa ultimately succeeded, her NEWT grades took a dive as a result.
Graduation meant an end to that feeling of camaraderie. Tessa moved back home, not really sure what she wanted to do with her life. She spent a couple of years working menial jobs at coffee shops and restaurants, but she was never happy doing them. She struggled with feeling so aimless, and fell into a pattern of getting into regular fights with her mother.
Finally, in 2010, her mother pushed her to either find a “real” job or move out. Tessa ended up interviewing for a position with the Werewolf Capture Unit. Although she was wary of joining the group at first, she ended up loving the sense of camaraderie that came with having teammates again, and found she far more enjoyed work that allowed her to be outdoors rather than being stuck indoors in a cafe. She has been with the Werewolf Capture Unit for two years now, and although she is not yet sure if it’s what she wants to do for the rest of her life, she’s yet to make any plans to move on.
Describe your job duties and how you go about them:
Tessa currently works for the Werewolf Capture Unit on Level Four at the Ministry. As a member of the WCU, she is responsible for participating in patrols around the full moon. During the rest of the month, she helps with reconnaissance, investigates possible werewolf sightings, and assists with morale by adding folded paper flowers around the office as decor.
Elaborate on your expertise in your field:
Tessa has survived as a member of the Werewolf Capture Unit for two years now. In that time, she has learned the basics of tracking and capturing werewolves. From the very begin, she has looked up to many of the more experienced members of the Capture Unit and proved to be eager to learn. Now, two years in, she is finally being given slightly more responsibility in the field, although she still struggles a little with uncertainty as a leader.
Her talents as an Animagus have also positioned her to be effective at her job, as she can scout out ahead and maneuver close to transformed werewolves in her animal form without triggering their natural instinct to attack.
Writing Sample:
Sum up your character in one paragraph:
Level-headed and hardworking, Tessa Fenneken is happiest when she feels part of a team. Although joining the Werewolf Capture Unit was not ever a career that she imagined herself falling into, she has come to appreciate the sense of camaraderie with her teammates, although she sometimes struggles to navigate the moral gray areas that come with her line of work.
