[Oct 15th] Consulting Children (Kurby)

on November 21, 2018, 01:10:55 PM

In the hand of Nicola Bagnold, written in conjunction[1] with Feliks Spectre.

Dear Uncle Kurby,

My classmate and I need some help with a history project Professor Greyfriar has set. It's to do with the persecution of werewolves. Have you heard about a book called The Lycan? One of the older students mentioned it when we asked for obscure sources. They didn't want to say anything else about it.

When we asked Professor Onuris if he knew anything about the history of werewolves, he brought up Tenacious Twine but he said maybe we shouldn't use it in our project. Is the twine dangerous? And what about the book?

Your Niece,

Nicola

"What the hell?"

Brow furrowed, the werewolf hunter reread the letter for the third time.  My classmate and I need some help...

That was all fine, even if Greyfriar's homework assignment made his head ache with the sheer self-centered stupidity of it.  But then Nicola proceeded to list off two key items that a Hogwarts student would probably think was a good idea to put in his or her novice werewolf hunting kit.

Was his niece in the process of doing something stupid?  It didn't seem like Nicola's sort of thing, although maybe one of her brothers or cousins had put her up to it.

Frowning, Kurby began to pen a reply.

Nicola,

Is this project about the historical persecution of werewolves? What time period are you supposed to be writing about?

I don't know why the hell everyone's being so secretive, unless they're all worried about making your Headmaster angry.  Tenacious Twine isn't dangerous -- we use it sometimes on capture missions.  It's silver twine that has been enchanted to be unbreakable.  The Lycan is an older book on werewolves.  It's a little outdated, but it's better than some of the more recent rubbish that goes on and on about how they're just fuzzy and misunderstood.  There used to be a copy in the Hogwarts Library in the Restricted section.

See if you can get your classmate to suggest to Greyfriar that first year students should be learning about how to keep themselves safe from werewolves, rather than waste time hunting down obscure sources about how they were "persecuted."

Kurby

P.S. If you or someone else is worried about a werewolf at Hogwarts, don't try to deal with it yourself.  Let me know and we can talk about it.

Cole looked at the unfamiliar owl as it landed in front of her during the morning post. She had been regularly receiving letters and care packages from her parents but they always used the family owl, even while abroad. As she took the letter and looked at her named scrawled on it, her face lit up and she instinctually looked down the table at Feliks.

She ripped it open and scanned her uncle's untidy scrawl. Her features fell and she once again tried to get Feliks attention. On one hand it was good to know that neither the twine nor the book were dangerous. On the other it didn't sound like her uncle was too happy with their story about a class assignment.

She looked to the post script and scowled. Her uncle seemed to think she was up to something. Who did he think she was, Kyson?!

Feliks slipped on to the bench, unconsciously nudging one of the other first years aside so that he could sit right next to Nicola. A letter! That meant that her uncle had replied! It had not taken very long and he was relieved by the quick response. His housemate did not seem reassured, however.

"Let me see," he took one side of the letter and scanned its contents eagerly. "Not dangerous!" Feliks exclaimed in a whisper, grinning slightly. "That is good."

And the book was not bad either. He thought that Nicola's uncle must have a very good memory to know that there used to be the same book in the Restricted Section. It was probably the same copy. The last person who borrowed it must have stolen it a long time ago....and then mailed it so recently? Why?

"Um, time period?" Feliks looked uncertainly at Nicola, "Contemporary?" he guessed, based on the fact that people were still using the twine. "Your uncle does not sound like he likes Professor Greyfriar."

Cole leaned in close so that Feliks could read the letter but also to allow them a bit of privacy while discussing its contents. She felt a little relief wash through her at Feliks happy exclamation. Now he knew his items weren't dangerous. They could cross sinister or malicious intent off from whoever sent the package to him.

She gave him a somewhat sour look, "I probably should have mentioned that my Uncle Kurby kinda just hates everyone." She looked back to the post script on the ketter, "but especially werewolves." She added in a hushed tones.

Nicola herself was divided on the matter. Professor Greyfriars seemed like a perfectly nice gentlemen. You definitely would know of his affliction just by looking at him. Then there were others like Uncle Kevin, Kyson's father. The entire reason her parents had taken Kyson's in, raised him like a son and a brother to Nicola was because his own father was unable to care for him (nor did he seem to want to) He let his illness consume and had pretty much stopped caring. Which was pretty harsh considering the three children He abandonned. However Nicola knew that she couldn't judge all werewolves just in the two she personally knew.

She leaned over the bench, picking up her napsack and pulling out parchment and quill.

Dear Uncle Kurby,

Thank you so much for responding so quickly. I'm happy to hear that the twine is dangerous. I think some of the older students were having a go at us.

You don't have to worry about me trying to track down any wayward werewolves at Hogwarts. That's your job!

I'll see what I can do about talking to the Professor. Doubt he'll change his mind though. The assignments already been set and I don't want to cause any trouble in my first year.

Stay Safe,
Love Cole

She turned to Feliks, "what do you think?"
