Physical Description:
Rafe Sellaphix has been described before by his sons as a large and squishy wizard. He is a wizard of fairly bulky build, benefitting from broad shoulders and a middle-aged belly. He reaches just over six foot and, while he used to carry a fair amount of bulk, he has lost significant weight during his 3 years as a prisoner in Azkaban. Rafe has a strong chin, large nose and brown eyes framed with wrinkles. Throughout the years prior to his incarceration, he kept a fairly neat beard and short hair, but is now appearing decidedly more scruffy and unkempt. His dark brown mane of hair, while still full and thick, is decidedly peppered with grey.

16-year-old Rafe Sellaphix thought that an excellent way to impress his teenage crush at the time was to get himself a large and obnoxious tattoo (perhaps making it easy to see where his oldest son gets his smarts from…). Therefore, 48-year-old Rafe Sellaphix is still adorned with a black and grey tattoo of the giant squid covering his left upper arm.

Fortunately, Zelda would say, no one gets to see the utter delights of Sid the Squid (a name from the Sellaphix boys) because Rafe’s upper arm is always covered. On a day to day basis, Rafe can be seen in a simple shirt with long sleeves rolled up to his elbows and an open collar, jeans and, at the apothecary, a black apron. He owns one tie which was bought and picked out for him by his wife when he faced the Wizengamot on trial.

Personality Description:
Despite having spent 3 years in Azkaban, Rafe doesn't fit the stereotype of a criminal. He is a friendly wizard who will chat to just about anyone. He loves his family, fire whiskey and wizards’ chess. Despite what some people may think, he is a smart wizard and he knows his trade inside out. He is, however, never allowed to touch the shop’s books. One accounting mistake was enough to earn him his wife’s ire. They may be a partnership but she is definitely the boss.

Rafe has always been a fairly easy going wizard. Until 3 years ago, he was content with his wife and 2 boys. It was a calm but loving family and he has always felt as if his wife was more of a partner and friend. He is a loving father but has often been hard on his eldest Figaro. The Sellaphix Apothecary is a family business that Rafe, as the eldest son, took over from his parents; as such, it was expected that Figaro will do the same. Unfortunately, with Fig not taking an interest, Rafe has grown deeply frustrated. He is torn between wanting the best for his son, and wanting to secure the future and success of a business he has dedicated his life to. Neither him nor his wife want the family legacy to end with them.

Rafe is terrible with any sort of authority. He likes to use first names when he meets people, and he is a believer that, despite how much money you have or what your blood line is, you are equal to the witch or wizard beside you. As such, he is not a supporter of the ministry or magic and their methods of dictatorship. He adamantly believes that no wix should tell another what spells they can cast and what potions they can brew. Too many laws and regulations are on good people, he feels.

A hard worker, Rafe is accustomed to putting in some very long hours at the apothecary. He would do anything for his wife and sons and is, as such, obsessed with setting them up right. Being locked in Azkaban for years has been torturous while knowing that they have struggled. He's always thought of Zelda as a strong and capable witch but he feels extraordinarily guilt-ridden about being unable to help in any way.

Rafe will work hard but greatly enjoys a laugh. Expect to see him spiking Figaro’s tea with eyebrow eliminator or going out to the back, performing an transfiguration spell and returning through the front of the shop disguised as a mystery and highly annoying customer. It has tricked  Zelda every time until he has starts laughing at her reaction. He will daily make comments about his wife’s ‘award winning smile’ or how smiling at customers won't actually harm her. It's been a thing between them for more than 20 years. He claims to their friends that he's still only seen 1 genuine smile from her and that was when she was waving Figaro off to Hogwarts. The thought of peace and quiet for several months, he says, can even make his wife grin.

History:
Some might believe Rafe if he told them that he was born in the apothecary and that wouldn't be entirely untrue. One the 1st November 1962, Gwendolyn Sellaphix went into labour while behind the counter serving a customer from a floating chair made by her husband, Francis Sellaphix for his pregnant wife who refused to stop working until the last minute. Rafe was born about 5 hours later in the pokey flat above the two-story apothecary shop. This flat would later become his home until he and Zelda succeeded in saving up for the small family home they now have in London Marylebone.

Rafe’s upbringing was rather unexciting. At 2 years old, his younger brother Bors was born. They didn’t get along as children. Rafe would spend a lot of time at the shop helping out until he finally left for Hogwarts. His family weren’t poor, but they were thrifty. This meant that he went to Hogwarts with second hand robes and books.

A clever young wizard with a love of extending his knowledge, Rafe was placed into Ravenclaw and excelled throughout his years in potions and herbology especially. This was, of course, of great relief to his parents who intended to have him take over the shop in the future.

It was after Hogwarts that Rafe started to date Zelda Morseley. None of his friends thought it would last. The two of them spent several years working up in Manchester where she’d come from. He still, however, remembers the day when he received the call calling him immediately back down to London. His mother had been attacked and killed by some breaking into the store when she’d been closing up. They’d cleared the place.

Immediately after, Rafe and Zelda moved down to help his father. They married in 1985 and ended up taking over the apothecary so that his father would retire. Rafe was 30 when he and Zelda had Figaro and it was during the second war that Zelda was pregnant with Frank. The couple, however, kept their heads down and out of the way of trouble.

For many of their years in the apothecary, the Sellaphixes had grown very adept at smuggling black markets goods for their more discerning of customers. In 2008, upon hearing of raids from the Ministry, Rafe instructed their stock go and general errand man to safely hide a large batch of Runespoor venom. Well, Rafe has learned since that if you want a job doing properly, do it yourself. Thanks to Nate Brigg’s stupidity, the venom exploded in Diagon Alley and the big mouthed moron named Rafe as the owner.

Rafe was convicted and sentenced to 7 years, perhaps 5 with help from his lawyer. He has now done 3 of his 7 years only to be approached by Level 4 with a deal on the table to help with tackling runespoor smuggling problems. He has, of course, jumped at this offer with the chance to be released.

Describe your job duties and how you go about them:
Rafe is, by trade, a potioneer. He brews many of the ready to use potions that the apothecary sells, and also offers advice on brewing and potions to use for different requirements and ailments. He isn’t allowed to touch the various business elements of the shop but he is the front man and the person with all of the connections and contacts.

Elaborate on your expertise in your field:
Rafe studied NEWTS in Potions, Herbology, Charms and CoMC. He has been a potioneer since school and an apothecary since he was in his early 20s. It is a family business that he took on over 20 years ago.

Writing Sample:

Sum up your character in one paragraph:
Rafe is a hardworking and friendly wizard. He is first and foremost a family man and an apothecary. He is an experienced smuggler and black market trader as well as, on the surface, an apothecary owner. His ethics concerning magic and potions are loose and he feels that a witch or wizard should have far more freedom than they do.
