Some extra oxygen? A climbing wall?” Abby teased on her way to fetch them refills. She thought she’d seen something called a ‘climbing wall’ when they’d all gone laser tagging. Perhaps she’d take him to one sometime for one of their more casual dates.Abby googled ‘liebchen’ and grinned at Sasha from the kitchen when the translation came up as dear or darling. As she moved back into the living room, she dropped her phone into her purse. Sasha had implied that there were a few things she’d want to pay attention to in the movie, if she could pay attention, considering the handsome bloke she settled next to on the couch. The Truth About Cats and Dogs flickered to life on the screen, and it wasn’t long before Abby understood why Sasha had picked it.“The main character’s name is Abby!” She exclaimed, as if he didn’t know. “And she’s as short as me!” The character stood in the lift dwarfed by everyone around her, just like she did at the Ministry. As they watched, Sasha made cute comments about how the Abby on the screen shared her sense of humor, and mentioned that main characters in romantic comedies each made a key mistake. She glanced at him, a sappy little smile on her face. Were they secretly living in a romantic comedy disguised as tragedy? When she was with him, she could believe that her mistakes were over and done with and they were on the road to being ridiculously happy together. The formula changed slightly (one mighty dog and one mighty pipsqueak of a dog instead of one cat and one dog), but they'd kept their endearing ensemble of friends. The Abby on screen joked about goat cheese and pretended to be a goat farmer. Abby burst out laughing, chucking a piece of popcorn at Sasha. Well played! They continued to interrupt the dialogue by commenting on the genius idea of pore maximizers, debating whether eating cake and cookies would ruin Sasha forever, comparing screen-Abby's skating to Abby's real life terribad skating, and laughing over the coincidence that both Roxy and Baldur had, as puppies, left gifts behind in shoes.Nearing the end of the movie, Abby snuggled into Sasha's side and said, "They're right that no one needs a boyfriend, but everyone who hasn't dated a certain Schlawkward is missing out." She glanced up at him with a flirtatious smile."Can't have him, sorry not sorry," she told the television. Sasha glanced up from the entertainment controls and towards the kitchen, where Abby was restocking their refreshments. He beamed at her, and caught the tail-end of her checking something on her phone before shaking his head and returning to the couch. An arch eyebrow and a slight nod confirmed the first (and most obvious) of the handful of impromptu Easter Eggs Sasha suspected Abby would find. "And, she's almost as adorable as you," he tagged on as the movie progressed through its own personal version of the classic rom com story progression. He laughed and grabbed a few pieces of popcorn to use to return fire, as Abby delighted in the onscreen mention of goat farming. "A certain Schlawkward?" Sasha repeated, looking down at Abby's smile with a look of concern, as he wrapped an arm around her shoulders. "You mean, there's more than one of us? That's a scary thought," he concluded, somehow managing to maintain a serious expression for several more minutes before laughing. A pronounced flush of color rose in his cheeks, but he shook his head. "Though that certain Schlawkward-" he offered, faltering only slightly over the nickname, thanks to his habit of trying to make 'vs; out of the 'ws' in his name. "-continues to be baffled by how he managed to get so lucky, he is happily off the market." The closing credits started to flicker across the screen and flicked off the television before wrapping his other arm around Abby and holding her close. He leaned over to kiss her, before glancing towards the ibex sculpture on the coffee table. "Well, I do hope your place of employment will be as tolerant of the occasional visitor and lunch guest as the radio station was, because it's inevitable." It did seem a bit ironic; the Department of Magical Law Enforcement was hardly a place Sasha anticipated visiting with any regularity. Not by choice, at least. "I mean, I know flowers can be delivered, but if I don't visit, I won't know which colors would clash with your desk's decorative theme." "The one and only Schlawkward is off the market."She hugged his side as he held her, paying very little attention to the end of the movie as the credits rolled. Did he even know that every time he spoke, the words reverberated in his chest and into her arms, and she could tell every time he hesitated or considered a word because he'd take a breath and hold it for a second? These were the sort of things she now knew, snuggling with him on the couch. She tilted her face up to kiss him, then smiled as he described visiting her at the Ministry."You will? You should!" She said excitedly, finding it a very sweet gesture that he wanted to visit and bring her flowers. "You know what matches my decor? You." Abby gently squeezed his arm. Everything went with the unicorn references and sparkles that would surely cover her desk at the Ministry. "Though if you must bring flowers from the mountain top, I won't complain."She grinned. One last goat joke to round out their date.Fin. Skip to next post
