Physical Description: With lots of make-up on her young face, it’s easy to tell that Aelys Valene Teagan Viridian-Drake, better known as Lys Drake, comes from wealthy beginnings. Lys loves to dress up in elaborate designs and expensive apparel and will make an occasion out of even the smallest things. Lys refuses to wear anything that is
not a designer brand, which can get quite ridiculous at times and she tries to get around wearing her uniform whenever she can.
Lys has thick brown hair with curled brown ends just below her sternum. Fully straightened, her hair goes all the way down to her waist. She still has plenty of baby-fat left in her cheeks and the rest of her body and while Lys isn’t fat exactly, you can tell she’s never starved. Lys is a little shorter than the average eleven-year old, something she delights in and takes advantage of whenever possible, claiming that means she is required to wear heels. Lys likes to pretend she’s older and will blatantly lie that she is older in order to maintain her ‘image’. Lys’s ears are pierced, and generally have small crystal studs in them when she’s not dressed up. Her eyes are a bright, vibrant blue, although they can look gray or green in certain lights.
Personality Description: Full of energy, Lys is always moving, always chattering away. More likely than not, though, she’s not talking to
you, she’s talking to herself. Lys is the kind of person who loves to have people around but is just as happy by herself. She is incredibly self-assertive, everything must be done her way or not at all. She is a very intense competitor and sometimes gets too into it – Lys has no qualms about sabotaging anyone if it means she’ll get the results she wants. Lys fights for her beliefs fiercely, but they aren’t always the right ones or the best ones.
A typical eleven-year-old, her tendency to act before she completely thinks it out causes her much grief. Lys is an individualist. In her head, she comes before everyone else – friends or family, no matter how close. She has been essentially on her own since she was very young and Lys is very self-sufficient and independent. Lys isn’t very good with people becoming actually close to her and will ignore people she thinks know her too well. Neglected as a child, Lys is secretly terrified that once people get to know her they’ll think she’s absolutely horrible and terrible. Lys is not very emotionally sensitive to the needs of others and she sometimes has difficulty with being empathetic. No matter how much she might fake cry for sympathy, Lys has zero tolerance for anyone else crying – for any reason and can be rather ruthless and cruel. Lys is a very sensitive child with deep, extreme emotions. She is either very happy or very sad and not always for reasons that make sense – to her or to others. Lys is very possessive as well – of absolutely
everything – and becomes jealous easily. She is very curious and Lys’s curiosity often gets her into trouble.
Despite being such an emotional child, Lys has been taught from a very young age that showing her emotions is bad and as a result, she tries not to show them. This doesn’t work very well because Lys simply ends up upset because she didn’t suppress her other emotions properly. Directing things is very fun to Lys and she can be quite bossy. She does know how to get things done and Lys manages to do what she thinks is necessary. Lys isn’t very concise and often talks in circles, confusing those around her. She thinks she has to do everything on her own and hates help unless she specifically asks for it.
Lys is very organized. Everything must be just so or she gets upset. She is very flighty, and loves to try new things and meet new people. Lys is incredibly self-confident and can come off rather egotistical. She loves attention and being the center of attention – shyness does not exist to Lys. Deeper than she lets on, Lys will and does act like a complete fool in hopes people will keep their eyes on her. Bored easily, Lys loves new things and new ideas and is generally very open unless they clash with some of the things she believes very strongly in. Very ambitious, Lys finds it difficult to slow down and live in the real world as opposed to the world of her fantasies.
She is usually okay with compromise, although she delights in competition. Lys is surprisingly good at solving issues between two or more people, and can be rather impartial and fair when it comes to it unless she thinks it’ll make her somehow vulnerable or unpopular, in which Lys would most definitely do whatever was best for herself. Trust is a big thing with this eleven-year old. If asked, Lys would proclaim dramatically that she was by far the most trustworthy kid ever. This is not true at all. Lys lies constantly about everything – her name, her age, even how she’s feeling or just because. She is a deceptive and manipulative girl, make no doubt about it. Lys is the short of child who starts plenty of rumors just for fun but will eagerly continue when she’s angry. Lys is not someone you want to get on the bad side of; she can be callous and nasty.
Despite Lys’s obvious many negative qualities, there is a charming little girl in there somewhere. Somewhat quirky and definitely unorthodox in her methods, Lys is an imaginative child who likes to help. She is good at listening, even if she can be rather unsympathetic – Lys
gets it when it matters, and if you’ve found your way into Lys’s heart, you have an incredibly loyal friend. Lys is good at diplomacy, and is a fixer type person. She can figure out the different viewpoints of people easily and has a sense for injustice, though that depends on her own biased view of whatever the topic at hand is. Aelys was raised by her father who has repeatedly taught her things like manners. As a result, Lys does understand the finer points of etiquette and is often appalled at her mum and sister. Somewhat naïve (though she’d never admit it), Lys knows far less about the world than she’ll admit. She is often a rude little brat to people, but she does know how to be charming when she really wants something.
History: It started out well. If one was to look at the family, they would have thought it was a strong, good family that would last for many, many years. The mum of the family was Callie Viridian-Drake, a musician and aspiring Wrockstar, and the dad – Mr. Leander Drake, a successful lawyer. They had a single daughter, Malynda Viridian-Drake, who was seven years old and one child on the way. On February 1st, at 4:19am after a long and hard labor, Aelys Valene Teagan Viridian-Drake came into the world.
Aelys – nicknamed Lys by her elder sister, Mally – was only five months old when Callie was given the opportunity of a lifetime. There was almost no choice
but for her to go on tour, leaving the very young Lys behind with her dad. Arguments escalated and before long, the two divorced. Leander quickly filed for custody of his youngest daughter. Leander was a well-respected lawyer with an outstanding reputation and credentials as well as a good deal of money and it wasn’t long before he had sole custody of Aelys. Barely one year old when the war finished, Aelys has no recollection of Death Eaters or that time at all. Her father was a purist and while he constantly instilled these beliefs in Aelys as she was growing up, he wasn’t a very vocal supporter and managed to do just fine when the war ended.
And so it was that Lys grew up practically an only child with just her father and nannies for company. Lys went through more than just a few nannies in her first few years. She was a difficult toddler, getting into everything and anything. After taking Lys to a dietitian, Leander changed Lys’s diet so the little girl was not allowed any caffeine, energy drinks or any extra sugars that would get her even more hyped up. This appeared to work to some extent. Lys was calm enough to sit still, to learn from her tutor once she turned five and to go to the dinner parties her father threw and went to.
She didn’t see her mum very much. Before she turned five, Lys didn’t even fully realize she had a mum at all. Despite this, Callie did visit her when possible. Her work was very demanding, however, and the visits were infrequent and hazy in the young girl’s mind. Mally sometimes stayed with Lys and Leander during the summer when Callie was on tour and busy, but never for very long. But that was just it – as far as little Lys was aware, Callie was just a name on her presents come Christmas and her Birthday and a visitor from time to time. Lys never found out, but Callie sent her letters frequently, and Leander confiscated them.
He didn’t like his ex-wife and poisoned Lys against her, telling the little girl often how he had ‘tried to get Callie to come over and say hi but the woman had refused’. It was lies, of course, but Lys was young and gullible and believed his words. She believed her mother had basically abandoned her when she was little and hated her. Lys’s relationship with her father was unusual but Lys had never lived in a different lifestyle and she was unaware that sometimes not seeing or hearing from her father for days at a time was not normal. She rarely had the same nanny for more than six months, preferring to be on her own or sneak out of the manor to try and find company her own age. Being essentially neglected emotionally without a constant older mentor around has wreaked havoc with her emotionally.
Everything comes to an end sometime and for Lys, “her life” came to end when she was nine. It was then Callie felt as though she had enough in order in her life to get her daughter back. Callie had a one-year old by then, Mr. Oscar Garrek Viridian-Farrelli, after divorcing the boy’s father. She quickly started a custody battle with Leander and some months later, to Leander’s surprise, the witch won. At nine years old, Lys went to live with her mum, older sister and baby brother for the first time.
Having more than a little bit of a culture shock living with Callie, Oscar and Mal, Lys is still adjusting to her home and misses the independence she had back at her father’s place. She traded her dollhouses for wrock music, her baby dolls for banshee dolls, and a very bland day-to-day life style for an eccentric one where she never knew quite what would happen next. Lys isn’t sure what to expect of life and she doesn’t know what House she wants to end up in.
How Do You Fit Into Your House?: Aelys fits into her house like a glove in nearly all aspects. She is a purist pureblood, firmly believing in the same ideals (at least when it comes to blood) as the founder of Slytherin although certainly not as strongly. She is an individualist – when given the choice, she will always save her own neck – and is intelligent. Lys is resourceful and manipulative, and she can almost always get the job done
right. Or right as far as she’s concerned, anyways.
Writing Sample:Show your character in a scene that illustrates the
best and worst aspects of their personality. Include action, dialog and thought.“What’s your name?” the boy looked her up and down. The shorter brunette looked at him coolly. “My name is Katie Hearts.” Her voice was high and firm with airs as though she expected him to get down and kiss her feet. Katie Hearts was such an amazing actress and Lys had seen her so many magazines. Surely Lys was awesome enough that anyone would believe she was Katie Hearts. Her large blue eyes widened and she tossed her thick brown hair over her shoulder dramatically. “Katie Hearts!” the girl’s voice rose even higher as the boy failed to show any sort of reaction. “Blimey!” Lys exclaimed with disgust, poking him in the chest. “Are you daft? Haven’t you heard of me?”
Maybe, she thought worriedly,
He really is daft and I’ve been picking on someone too stupid to know I am the Katie Hearts. Sort of. I could be, if I tried, I bet. Ugh! Lys made a face and pushed the boy. That got a reaction.
“Look, you duffer, bugger off. I’ve never heard of you.” He glared at her as Lys opened her mouth and started protesting.
Not heard of me? Not heard of me? How can he not have heard of me? I’m famous! she thought, clenching her fists.
“I said,” the boy repeated in a firmer, more dangerous voice.
“Bugger off.” Lys glared at him. He was far bigger than her. She had no doubt he could take her in a fight.
“You bugger off! You’re a – a, uh, daft butthead!” she yelped, darting off before he could take a swing at her. Lys ran panting into her home. Her father was home, for once, sitting at his desk and working diligently on whatever he had brought home. “Why doesn’t anyone believe me?” Lys asked her dad miserably. “I make a
brill Katie Hearts.”
“Maybe,” Lys’s dad, Leander said slowly in a monotone as he carefully scrawled something down, not looking at his daughter,
“You should focus on being you.”Lys pouted. “But Daddy!” she whined, “I’m not smashing at all. I’ve just got a silly name and you and Mu- oh! Do you think,” Lys asked with sudden excitement, as she flopped herself down onto their large, squishy leather couch, propping her head up on her palms, “They’ll believe me if I say I’m Katie Hearts’s lovechild?”
“Katie Hearts is nineteen years old, dear.”
“So?”
Sum up your character in one paragraph: Aelys “Lys” Valene Teagan Viridian-Drake is an incredibly organized, over-emotional, independent, manipulative and self-sufficient little girl obsessed with getting attention. Lys comes off as bratty and egotistical, refusing to wear clothes she thinks are vulgar and instead staying solely in name brands. She is very curious and energetic.
