[17th August] Double Birthday Surprise (Snapshot)

M for language used by angry wife.

It was with great relief that Alec Carter stepped from the fireplace in the atrium on level 8. As he stepped forward, he gladly loosened the tie that had been practically strangling him and he undid the top button of his white shirt. The morning had been spent at the Norwegian ministry with old colleagues discussing their own take on the dementor population. Hours had been spent going around in circles while taking detailed notes to share with the minister and Carter was very happy to finally be back on British soil and out of the swirling floo system that left one feeling decidedly sickly with intercountry travel.

“Mr Carter, Sir!” Kayla Greensleeves basically accosted the boss as he stepped out of the lift on level 4. She’d clearly been there waiting for him.

“Yes?” Alec asked coolly.

“There’s a woman in your office, Sir. And two boys. She spoke no English.”
Alec froze on the spot, eyes intent on Kayla as she babbled.
“I wanted to stop her, Sir. But…well…I couldn’t get into your office.” her comment was pointed, that didn’t escape the wizard, but he was far more focused on the fact that a woman who spoke no English was in his office with two boys.

“Get us some black tea,”
“I’m not your assistant, Sir. I’m Mr Gamp’s as-”
“Black tea. Now.” He didn’t wait to watch her obey, instead making a beeline for his office where he pushed the door open to see a familiar figure leaning over his desk with her back to him. Even in the awkward situation, it was hard to stop his eyes from lingering on the familiar ass he’d always appreciated.

“Malin.”
His almost ex-wife stood straight and turned to face him. Merlin’s balls, she was still gorgeous. But that look… Malin was mad.

“Happy Birthday, husband.” Her tone was icy as the witch addressed him in her native Norwegian tongue.
“It’s tomorrow.”
“I’ll not be here then.”
“Okay.” Alec frowned, casting his eyes to the boys lingering by the bookshelf, not at all eager to rush over to their father in their mother’s presence. Alec could only imagine the junk she’d poisoned their minds with about him. Jan stared across the small office, clearly wanting a hug but Fredrik, two years older and clearly siding more with Malin, kept a firm hand on his brother’s shoulder. “So why now?”

“It’s your month.” Malin’s arms were crossed as she stared at her husband with what he could only read as pure loathing.

“For what Mal?” But Alec’s question was answered as he followed her gaze to the boys by the bookshelf. “You’re joking?” His dark brown gaze snapped back to hers, the lines around his eyes creasing deeply to deveal his age and the current stress. Malin said nothing more as she gave the boys and hug, told them she’d see them soon and moved towards Alec and the office door.
“I can’t take them, Malin. I live with my parents for Merlin’s sake!”
“In that huge house. Get out of my way, Alec.”

He could feel his temper rising, he wanted to bellow at her and tell her exactly how much of a psychotic bitch she was but the boys were watching. His boys.
He didn’t push back as she shoved him out of the way and started to walk through the outer office.

“Sign the papers, Alexander!” Malin shouted, surprisingly in heavily accented English. The bitch had learnt that phrase in English just to embarrass him! “Happy Birthday, you cheating bastard!” The final line came as she stepped into the lift.

Stood in the doorway, Alec grimaced.
