[7 Aug] Flying the Airwaves [Ginny]

on October 03, 2017, 03:10:52 PM

About 1:30am, Sunday morning

“And so in these small hours of the night, as you know listeners, I often sit alone with you, marking through to dawn…” Lipsticked lips drew back in a smile over bright white fangs in a pale face behind the microphone. Cass Motley was in her element, in her show in the small hours of the night. In the Diagon Alley studios, she kept the night shift and insomniacs company, the day shift now out of bounds due to her vampyrism.

Cass’ listeners were transient as well as regulars, and they had become accustomed to her eclectic taste of both modern hits, old classics and unsigned artists on her show. There was a good dose of wizard rock (or wrock) and the odd spike of punk if she felt they needed waking up on long cold nights. But though they were past the summer equinox and the days were growing shorter and the nights longer, it was still the summer. Days where kids hung off broomsticks and climbed up trees, and pipe smoke hazed into the sunshine from bearded wizards on striped deckchairs.

“We’ll be right with her, after these messages.” Cass flicked some switches with her pale hands and turned silently in her chair to give Ginny Weasley-Potter her full attention. In the background the faint noise of an advert for compost could be heard in an upbeat tempo.

“So, once these are done I’ll bring the microphones back up and we’ll have a chat. You know, get into the groove with some banter before I start asking the proper questions. If you were selling a book we’d obviously talk about that, you’re not writing a book are you? Or promoting anything? I’m sure my producer probably asked but ….?” Cass looked expectantly at the witch opposite her, sat before her own microphone. The advert was now softly singing a jingle about the compost which would embed itself irrevocably into the vampire’s memory for decades to come. “Anything out of bounds, so to speak?”

Ginny could not believe she was up at 1:30 am in the morning that didn't involve the children and she absolutely loved it. It was thrilling, being invited to be on the radio, but she was nervous as well. In front of someone you could easily do away with a mistake with a smile or wave of the hand but on air? If you flubbed everyone heard and they were left to their own imagination on what could have possibly happened. Ginny did not want to psych herself out though, so she wiped her ever growing sweaty hands on her jeans and turned to Cass Motley, giving her a small, yet confident smile. Cass Motley certainly was in her element. She was smooth and something about her and her voice made you want to listen on.

She shook her head no, smiling at the thought of writing a book. "I'm not sure what I would write about, but no, I'm not currently writing a book. I could promote the Prophet of course, but nothing in particular." Ginny was worried she was a bit too boring for the show, but she was ready to hopefully give the listeners a good time.

"Nothing is out of bounds," she replied softly, thinking of her marriage suddenly. But to the outside world all was good and she would tell them so. "Thank you again for asking me on. This is really quite thrilling." Ginny smiled again, her nerves slowly settling, truly excited to do something so out of the ordinary.

This is really quite thrilling,

“Isn’t it?” Cass replied, grinning her bright white fangs at Ginny, “and we’re not even begun.” She winked at the witch and peered over at the spinning record playing the compost advert. “Alright, ready?” She gave Ginny a thumbs up and flicked switches, before turning up a knob. A valve amongst all the radio boxes beside her began to glow more brightly in a big glass dome.

“Welcome back listeners, and tonight we welcome a very special guest. Some of you may remember her for this moment,” Cass flicked a different switch and the sound of one of the wireless quidditch commentators began to babble out in an excited tempo: And it’s Weasley - it’s Weasley she’s diving down, down and oh - look at the speed - she has to have seen the snitch and - Cass gave her guest another brilliant grin as one of Ginny’s finest quidditch moments was relived by sound alone.

“But these days you might read her in the sporting columns of the Daily Prophet, as Senior Reporter - that’s right, with me tonight is no other than the infamous Ginny Weasley-Potter! Hello Ginny, it’s great to have you here,” Cass paused to allow her guest to react with polite introduction, normally it took a few words to start to feel comfortable talking on the air when you didn’t do it regularly. She wanted to put Ginny at ease.

“Now we heard there a clip of one of your finest moments with the Holyhead Harpies where you played seeker. Can you take us back to that moment. What was it like for you, to be able to win the game in such a dramatic fashion?[1] Set the scene for our listeners.”

Ginny was not necessarily unnerved by the sight of fangs, but rather curious and intrigued. She had never met a vampire before, or at least one that she knew was a vampire, and she wondered how the change in species had changed Cass' life. That was a question for another day though, she needing to focus on the exciting task at hand.

Ginny gasped slightly at the small clip, she going back to that very moment being heard on the radio. She could not help but grin back, a radiant one, at the thought of catching that snitch. Bloody.... She realized in that moment how much she actually missed playing the game.

"Thank you so much Cass, it's great to be here," the excitement clearly heard in the witch's voice, though she was, of course, a little nervous. "It's pretty amazing to be hear actually," she laughed lightly.  She nodded, forgetting for a moment people could not actually see her. "Thank you. It's pretty amazing to hear such a compliment. That moment.. Well, let's just say I wish I could go back to it right now. I didn't think I was actually going to make it. I though for sure I was going to splatter on the ground before actually getting the snitch. And strangely, I was okay with that. The wind was whipping me in the face and I could actually smell the grass and dirt coming towards me. It was like I was the only one on the field at that moment. My team paved the way for me for that moment.  I had been playing pretty well most of the game, but I knew if I did not get the snitch in those last moments, we would not win." Ginny took a breath, hoping she was doing okay.

"I stretched my fingers out and while going at that same speed, dodging other players, barely stayed on my broom, I somehow managed to catch that snitch. It.. it was an amazing feeling."

Bless, Ginny was properly excited. Cass was excited too. She loved having a name on her show, someone for her listeners to hear from other than her.

… I wish I could go back to it right now.
“Uhuh.” Cass agreed quickly,
… didn’t think I was actually going to make it…

The presenter gasped for good measure.

… for sure I was going to splatter on the ground before actually getting the snitch. And strangely, I was okay with that.
So badass.” Cass uttered, admiring Ginny.

… I somehow managed to catch that snitch. It… it was an amazing feeling.

“Oh my goodness,” Cass replied, trying not to delay to keep this excitement between them and convey it over the airwaves to their listeners, “Just looking at you here, I mean, listeners, you can probably hear, but I can also see how alive our guest is as she recounts this monumental moment in her quidditch career - I’m safe to say it was, right? I mean, there were many fantastic moments and we could be here all night just reminiscing your finest moments on a broom…” Cass nodded and grinned.

“You can’t recreate that feeling can you, not quite. The speeds you go as a seeker in the league, merlin, you can’t think as fast. And you saying you were ok with being splattered on the ground. I mean, listeners, are you with me here, what a badass.” Cass raised both hands to give Ginny a comic little bow at the desk.

“Now these days you interview other players for The Prophet.” Cass leaned in a little and lowered her pitch suggestively, “Do you ever get caught up in the game you forget you’re reporting. Or… ever think you could do a better job with your eyes closed…?”

Ginny blushed with both pride and excitement, nodding and forgetting the listeners couldn't see her. "There were many great moments in my career but that one..well, that one was one of the best." Ginny's mouth formed a round o shape at being called a badass, but she could not help but really puff up like a peacock. This was amazing! Gods it felt so long since she talked about Quidditch in this way and she realized just how much she truly missed it.

Ginny grinned and could not help but laugh, leaning in closer as well. "All the time Cass. Well, the part about getting caught up in the game of course," she winked. "But just a secret, between you and me, I definitely think I could do a better job than some of these younglings, even in my old age." Ginny whispered loudly, "They let just anyone play Quidditch these days," she said in jest, her voice saying such.

"I do have to say being a reporter and spectator is certainly eye opening.  What a different view it is on the other side."

… between you and me…
“Just between me and you,” Cass winked, even though it was between them and Cass’ loyal listeners in the night.

They let just anyone play Quidditch these days,
Criminal.” Cass agreed, playing along.

… What a different view it is on the other side.
“Especially to the trained eye,” the vampire radio host agreed. “We’ll be right back with you Ginny, after this song from Devil's Snare.” She winked at Ginny and flicked a switch, causing more valves to glow and a purple record began to spin, sending a rock song across the airwaves.

“You’re doing great!” Cass assured Ginny, flexing her neck one way and then the other and stretching. “Can I get someone to make you another drink?” Without letting Ginny answer, Cass was gesturing to the other side of the studio, clicking her pale fingers to the producer and a sleepy looking assistant, “Someone please make my guest a drink.”

Small talk was all you could really do while the music interludes played, because the big questions had to be for the listeners, all fresh and not regurgitated from off-air discussion. Her fingers expertly turned dials to fade out the music, reintroducing her guest.

“And that was Devil’s Snare and this is Cass Motley, mistress of your nighttime listening on the Wizarding Wireless Network, enchanting your ears and disturbing your dreams. We’re here with Ginny Weasley-Potter, famous hero, quidditch player and now correspondent.”

She looked back to Ginny properly with a big grin, “So Ginny, you said it’s a different view on the other side, now you’re a reporter, not a player. You’ve traded a broom for the stands, of course, but other than that, is there anything that you realise now about the sport that you didn’t before? Is that view a better one?”
