Adrestia Beatrice Gamp
Curator of Ancient Cartography, National Museum of Wizarding History
Werewolf Mentor
Character Birthday & Age: 6th November 1981, 29 years
City & Country of Birth: High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire. UK.
Blood Purity: Unknown (Adopted)
Alma Mater: Ravenclaw, Hogwarts
Wand: 10 inches, Fir wood with Dragon Heartstring core. Roughly hewn hilt with a smooth, twisted shaft.
Physical Description: Adrestia Gamp, at about 5'1'' (and with a dislike for heels), is a short witch. She has round, watchful eyes and a face that doesn't quite lend itself to natural smiles; still, she tries. It has a pretty effect.
Her hair is woody dark brown - bit lighter in sunny months - and she wears it down to her shoulders, or in a ponytail when she's working. Tia doesn't pay much attention to her looks in that sense. She aims to look presentable and likes to play with eyeliners but her days of full-face cosmetics are long behind her.
If Tia could get away with wearing jeans every day, she would. As it is she's comfortable in work robes (black slacks or leggings underneath) and various button up shirts. Jewellery is minimal at best. Adrestia's boyish figure pairs well with her casual style - if she has to dress up, clean cut dresses are the way to go.
Adrestia carries herself confidently when she's busy with work and other tasks or chores. Social events cause her to shrink away from attention, a common sight at parties where she leans against walls and makes small talk with the less showy guests.
Her lower back is marred by claw mark scars, with a bite scar on her right hip. This is from a werewolf attack in her past.
Personality Description: Adrestia, raised an only child in the pretty but dull town of High Wycombe, is known to glancing acquaintances as a quiet witch. Friends and colleagues are more familiar with her blunt words and morbid fascination for a good piece of gossip. Although she lives by herself, she likes to try new things: recipes, art projects, ill-advised craft based hobbies, etc etc. Almost none of them are well-executed. Her flat has an entire wall dedicated to cut out news or magazine articles, where she sources the inspiration for these private adventures. Tia doesn't like to stagnate.
She's very much a morning person. After a good cuppa and a huge breakfast, there's nothing she likes better than to get down to her tasks for the day. Adrestia only sleeps in when she has company in bed (or a very bad hangover). Although she enjoys her job, she works at a very relaxed pace. History is going nowhere and - at least where her job is concerned - she would prefer to do a good job, rather then a rushed one.
Her political opinions are fairly strong. Being a werewolf herself, Tia is always in support of more rights for her kind (as well as for other Beings). She doesn't tend to get into arguments about this unless she is provoked - and she's usually merciless in this regard.
History: Mabel Shufflebottom married Edmund Gamp in the late seventies. They were twenty-five and thirty-five respectively at the time, quite fond of each other. Mabel had been doing secretarial work at the small trading company in which Edmund was a founding partner. The trading company didn't last (Edmund went on to join a larger one in a less major capacity) but their marriage certainly did. In spite of their good chemistry, however, the couple could not conceive.
They adopted their first and only child, barely a month old, in December 1981. Edmund decided to name her Adrestia - he had been inspired by the astronomical and mythological names of his various nieces and nephews.
CHILDHOOD
Most parents would dote on an only child. Mabel and Edmund did not. They had a nice home in High Wycombe, which benefitted from the joyous sound of a laughing daughter, but their experience did not encourage having a larger family. They were satisfied with Tia. Her mother had stopped working to stay at home and run the house, so it was just the two of them a lot of the time. Oxford was not far, though, so Tia had the added benefit of meeting her cousins there from time to time. She had been shy around them at first but eventually grew more comfortable socialising in general.
Some days, Edmund would take her into work with him and show her around the trading company he worked at. He was a trading negotiator and attorney but Adrestia's favourite thing about his job was all the maps he displayed in his office. She was fascinated by how big the world was, and how it was depicted in stylised works of cartography.
HOGWARTS
To her mother's pleasure, Adrestia was sorted into Ravenclaw. She was clever for her age and had never outgrown that toddler phase of asking "why" every time somebody made a statement. It drove her parents to distraction but it was a valuable asset in her studies. She spent her years at school focusing on her favourite subjects - the same ones she would go on to achieve NEWTs in: Charms, History of Magic, Muggle Studies, Ancient Runes and Astronomy.
Her social life had been a colourful one. Tia had a handful of close friends but she also spent a lot of time joining and quitting various clubs, where she made other acquaintances; she never had the staying power to remain in any one club for all seven years. Not that it was a smooth seven years anyway.
Adrestia had been two years behind Harry Potter, and only fifteen years old when the Battle of Hogwarts took place. She had survived those horrors and gone on to finish her OWLs and NEWTs on time to graduate in her intended year. Her experience in the battle had been traumatic but, being one of the smaller and younger witches, she had been well-protected by her peers. Tia was never one to wander off by herself in a dangerous situation.
YOUNG ADULTHOOD
That is, until she did wander off by herself one afternoon when she was taking a year off in the Paros Islands of Greece. Adrestia had escaped the home she considered quite boring, eager to get a change of surroundings and hang out with her friends. The holiday on the Islands was the last leg of their long trip in the Mediterranean - one of copious drinking, reckless broomstick racing, skinny dipping, and midnight treks by moonlight.
She had gone out to walk in the full moon that night, unaware that there had been a werewolf alert two towns over from the one they'd been staying at. The only reason Tia made it out alive from the werewolf attack was because of the wizards and witches who had been out, searching for the creature. They had found it just in time for Tia to escape certain death... but not to escape being bitten.
NATIONAL MUSEUM OF WIZARDING HISTORY
Luckily for Tia, her preferred career path was not one known for its reluctance to hire Werewolves. The witch spent a year at home with her parents after the initial attack; to adjust to her transformation cycle and come to terms with how dramatically different her life might be from that point on. She was positively impatient to get moving, after that one very long year, and immediately applied for an apprenticeship at the Museum.
This involved working under various Curators in different departments - there was a whole world (and more) to explore within the Museum and her apprenticeship did more to help Adrestia come to terms with her Lycantrophy than any time at home could have. She allowed herself to live, work and grow inside this bubble.
By the time she had graduated from being an apprentice, Tia was ready to choose her specialty. It was easy. Her love for maps prevailed; she was deeply dedicated to tracking the progress of human exploration over the centuries, and to helping provide geographical context for different eras in history.
This was also when Adrestia found herself looking to socialise outside of her professional field, returning to her hobby-hopping habits as a way of meeting new people. She joined book clubs, knitting groups, duelling clubs, clandestine magic carpet societies... anything that would have her for a short while.
It was effective in its own way. Most of all, it gave her the courage to come forward and apply to the Ministry's Being Division as a Werewolf Mentor (after she heard about it from someone who'd been in the short-lived Fwooper Breeding Society).
Working in a museum and studying history had helped Adrestia understand that there has always been precedence for Werewolves, as well as for discrimination against her kind. By choosing to be a mentor, she felt she would be able to help other werewolves understand the full extent of their identities - not just on a personal level but on a societal one, the history they inherited from first bite.
Describe your job duties and how you go about them: Curator of Ancient CartographyAdrestia reigns supreme in the Museum's Hall of Cartography. It isn't the grandest or most popular section of the Museum but she is quite happy with how it is run. The hall itself is long, wide room. An upper floor gallery (vast, famous maps framed on the walls) runs along the sides of the hall and overlooks the ground floor, which houses a library of maps that are available for viewing upon request.
Every work day, Adrestia gets in with ample time before visiting hours begins. She usually plays the Wireless on full blast if she's the first person to arrive. Does a bit of terrible dancing and singing. Serenades the odd statue. When that's out of her system, the real work begins in earnest. Her mornings involve the restoration of various maps - or sometimes illustrations - that have recently come into the Museum's possession. This hands-on work, occasionally followed up by time spent with an archivist: this is to discuss displaying a new map or storing one that has been on exhibition for too long.
Afternoons in the Hall are the busiest, visitor-wise. This is when Tia will give tours or short talks, depending on what's been planned at the start of the month. This is also when she might hold appointments with private individuals interested in seeing especially rare maps: explorers, historians, writers and such. She wraps up her day by ensuring the Hall is in a safe and secure condition - then leaves promptly an hour after closing time.
Werewolf MentorAndrestia spends two days of her week on level four duties, fulfilling her requirements as a mentor. One of these days is usually a full day at the weekend, while the other is just a few hours of her evening during the weekday. She takes her responsibilities seriously and sometimes ends up letting her sessions run on for longer than anticipated.
At present, Tia has about five werewolves who see her as their mentor. She has one hour appointments with each of them two times a month: once before the full moon, once after. The appointments take place in various forms. Some of them prefer the formality of a small meeting room in the Ministry, where sensitive information can be shared. Others request meetings in places like coffee shops or parks, or even muggle areas.
Adrestia uses these sessions to catch up on her charges. She'll ask them about their professional lives, recent discrimination, their political views. Sometimes it's just small talk to complain about how non-werewolves suck because they take so much for granted. Tia figures that as long as they know she's there if they need help, then she's doing an okay job.
Elaborate on your expertise in your field: MusuemTia has always worked at the museum. As above, she began her work there as an apprentice and is now a full-time Curator of a relatively small but busy section.
MentorAndrestia applied to be a mentor with very little experience besides her own mentoring of apprentices at the Museum. However, the lack of werewolf mentors at the time meant that she would have to get most of her experience while actually doing the job. She began by only having one or two young charges to meet. Nowadays she has about five, of various ages and backgrounds.
Writing Sample: Sum up your character in one paragraph: Adrestia Gamp is a Curator at the National Museum of Wizarding History, as well as being a Werewolf Mentor. She's a quiet, quirky young woman at first glance - but can quickly reveal herself to be a blunt but passionate person, in friendship. Tia loves trying out new things. She also loves cheesecake.
