Bendy with a bent shaft. She's working on waterproofing it.Physical Description: Standing at 144 cm, Yarrow is most often seen as a blur. She is rarely still, and even when she is, she vibrates with an impatient energy. Her hair is shoulder-length, brown, and usually wet from swimming; her eyes are brown as sealskin. Her skin, though naturally pale, is usually tanned from spending so much time in the sun. She has a serious face that belies an ebullient nature. Yarrow likes to wear clothes that are either tight enough to feel like a second skin or loose enough to swish around when she twirls, though she's found that her Hogwarts robes do nicely.Personality Description: If Yarrow were to be boiled down to one word, that word would be curious. She wants to know everything there is to know, but since this is categorically impossible she'll settle for learning and experiencing everything she can. Her favorite way to learn is through practice and instruction from masters, but it's true that the only way to get her to sit still is by giving her a book - she's a voracious reader, just has a hard time doing a lot of reading in one go.Having grown up partly as a seal, Yarrow's not the best at subtlety or understanding that you just don't ask some questions, leading her to be rather blunt and straightforward. She means well, though, and she's trying to learn these "social skill" things - she's pretty good at detecting sarcasm these days and has even started trying it out herself. She's fond of puns and intellectual humor, even if she can't always keep up with her housemates.Yarrow is also quite outgoing - she thinks that, the more people she talks to, the more she'll be able to learn. She's always looking for new experiences, good and bad, which sometimes gets her into trouble (she didn't mean to get locked in the broom closet, she just wanted to know what was in there and then the door shut!) and frequently gets her into adventures. She doesn't have much of a sense of danger when she's out of the water, living with the sense that many eleven-year-olds have of being invincible.History: The courtship of Saoirse Blackmoor was a strange one, perhaps even without precedent. There was something unusual about her lover - she had an inkling when he gave his name as simply Eider, a hunch when after months she had never seen him after sundown. After the first and only night they spent together, he was gone by sunrise - and by then she was certain. Eider was a selkie, a shapeshifter who took the form of a man on land and that of a seal in the water.Despite the touch-and-go nature of their relationship, Saoirse and Eider continued to meet, sometimes on land and sometimes at the Falmouth docks. When Saoirse told Eider she was pregnant, he was overjoyed - if a little worried. Would the baby be human, or selkie? When Yarrow was born, Saoirse took her right to the seaside. If she were a selkie, she would need to get to water quickly - a selkie on land for a full day would wither like a snowdrop in summer. And selkie the baby was, at least partly - her parents discovered that, although she didn't grow weak after most of a day on land, she couldn't last more than a week.Because of this, Yarrow's childhood consisted of visits to the coast at least once a week (often more), where she could spend time with her father, learning the ways of life underwater. Saoirse often joked that her daughter spent more time in the water than on land, her father's child through and through. And it may have been true. Yarrow certainly spent as much time as possible swimming, whether in the sea, the river Fal, or the bath in the Blackmoor family home. Spending so much time in her seal-form left its mark - Yarrow often seemed to think more like a seal than like a human. Her priorities were safety, food, and staying close to her family - things like manners, presentation, and social convention came second. Or, in the case of looks, not at all. When she was eleven, Yarrow got a letter from Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry - her mother was something of a witch, despite her lack of schooling (she had chosen to stay at home and help her parents with the household rather than go to school). Yarrow was reluctant at first - will I be able to see you? will I be able to swim? - but eventually caved to the temptation of all the knowledge to be gained. Thus far, Yarrow has had a mixed bag of a time at Hogwarts. She goes for a swim in the Black Lake at least once a week, writes to her mother frequently, and does quite well in her practical classes. She does not do nearly as well in classes mostly based on reading (History of Magic, in particular, though Astronomy is a struggle as well). All the same, she's learning more than she ever imagined, and she loves it.Classes: Core ClassesAstronomyCharmsDefense Against the Dark ArtsHerbologyHistory of MagicPotionsTransfigurationFlyingElectives-----How Do You Fit Into Your House?: Yarrow was chosen for Ravenclaw because of her curious nature.
