[28 May] Chasing Your Own Tail (Daniel, PM)

on March 22, 2017, 11:28:54 AM

"Practiced with Mai last weekend," Cara chattered amiably to Daniel as the pair tromped across the grounds towards the unoccupied pitch, "reckon that went well. Still a bit undecided between Chaser and Beater, though I guess we'll figure that one out come tryouts, eh?"

She paused partway down the pitch, broomstick slung across her shoulders, each arm over the wooden shaft of the flying device.

"Sorry, love—what position do you play? Chaser, right? Figure that's what I'd like, to be honest, but I don't reckon I've really played enough to know that. I mean, I'm a fair flyer—that much I know—but I've only ever played a few pickup games here at school, usually once the term's ended, or on holidays. Mam and da are muggles, like, and we live in Carrack, so... can't say I get much of an opportunity to play at home."

Cara flashed Daniel an endearing smile.

"Anyhow! Since you're a Chaser, I reckon we could work on my... ahm... Chasin' together, yeah? Oh—and thanks loads for helping me out, love—I really do appreciate it."

Dan chuckled to himself a little, this should be interesting.
"Yeah I'm a Chaser, played it most of my life just never had the opportunity to play at school yet. I live on a huge farm back home so we can play all the time, when we aren't working that is." He smiled as he tossed the quaffle he was carrying up in the air and caught it again and again, "If you want to work on playing Chaser I'm more than happy to, I don't know too much about beating. Except for beating up bullies and the opposition"  His face lit up with a cheeky smile, with his tongue sticking out between his teeth. "So how's your reactions!?" Dan threw the quaffle at Cara suddenly, not aiming for her just near enough so she could catch it.

"A farm, huh? Sounds nice. I love the outdoors! 'course, Carrack's not too big—don't know if you've ever been, can't imagine so—so I reckon I could buzz up into the hills on my broom and have some fun, but ah... mam and da don't like me puttin' too many toes into the magic world when I'm at home. Suppose it's on account of the—er—accidents I had when I was a kid, yanno, and I didn't have a good handle on the whole... shapeshiftin' thing. Got the Obliviators to come down a couple of times to set my classmates and teachers straight."

In response to his question, she began with: "Reckon my reflexes are—"

Cara was abruptly cut off by Daniel's unannounced hucking of the quaffle! Though she let her broomstick hit the turf, she caught the ball easily enough, her hands and wrists free of any nervous twitches. She seemed rather dextrous, to say the least.

"—pretty good," Cara finished, grinning as she tossed the quaffle back to Daniel and picked up her broomstick.

"Doesn't count that I dropped the broom, mate! Harder to drop those in the air, like."

"Not bad!" Dan caught the quaffle one handed and tucked it back under his arm. "I've been there once or twice actually, my family is from Donegal." He cracked his neck as they arrived at the pitch. "You got good reflexes lass, fair flyer too I've heard. I don't know much about playing Beater but Chaser? That I can help with" He dropped his broom to the ground and stripped out of his jacket so he was just wearing a tight t-shirt and his jeans. Now as you can see I'm lean and strong, makes me great at shooting and tackling, pretty nifty flyer too. I play a more physical role, tackling other chasers and shooting under pressure. You however? you look like you're a lot quicker than me so I'd say you'd be great on the perimeter moving quick and passing quicker."

"I've been there once or twice actually, my family is from Donegal."

"No foolin'?" Cara exclaimed, grinning. "Only about two hours away from Carrick! Surprise, surprise."

She stood back as Daniel shed his jacket—and nodded her head, forced to agree that he was, indeed, a strong looking fellow.

"Reckon you'd make a decent Beater, honestly, on size alone," she appraised, offering him another smile. She need not discard any articles of clothing, as she was dressed in a burgundy sweatshirt, dark joggers, and trainers—for it was not yet warm, and the nippy temps were rather exacerbated by the whipping of the wind on broomstick.

"You however? You look like you're a lot quicker than me, so I'd say you'd be great on the perimeter, moving quick and passing quicker."

"Oh, aye, I ought to move faster than you—I'm bloody well half your size soaking wet, mate!"

Cara laughed as she mounted her broom, kicking off lightly and hovering no more than ten feet off the ground, peering down at Daniel.

"Well—direct me as you see fit, love."

"Alright," Dan said jumping on his broom and hovering across from Cara. "Let's start with the basics, we're going to fly at half speed up the pitch passing the quaffle to each other as quick as you can. Second lap we'll go full speed. Think you can handle that?" Dan knew she probably could but sometimes the best way to get someone to give their all was to challenge them.

"Sounds like a plan, mate," Cara replied brightly.

Alongside Daniel, she buzzed out along the pitch, peering sidelong at her practice partner as they flew. Cara found that the notion of keeping your eyes peeled—both for bludgers and the quaffle—while flying forward was difficult, just as it had been when she was practicing with Mai. She suspected that this was normal, though: she'd rarely needed to focus her attention on anything but what was right in front of her when flying.

On Daniel's first pass, Cara nearly fumbled the quaffle, but managed to catch it all the same, clutching it to her ribs for a moment as she regained her composure. Catching the ball on the ground and while hurtling above the ground on a broomstick were two very different concepts, as it turned out.

Cara wound up and hooked her arm towards Daniel, passing the quaffle back as they wound their way down the pitch.

Dan caught the pass and slung another one straight back, "You need to be able to pass and fly like it's a reflex, there's going to be a lot of information coming at you and you don't want to be having to worry about catching or flying." He smiled "I know it sounds hard but you'll get the hang of it. I have had heaps of practice with my family so don't feel like you have to beat me. We are in the same House after all."

Cara caught the quaffle much more smoothly the second time, immediately tossing it back underhand to Daniel.

"I'll get used to it," she calls back, smiling somewhat anxiously—it was a skill she had never had to practice before, and she was somewhat concerned that she'd be unable to pick it up in time to join the team... or that somebody else that was more capable of practicing at home might beat her out.

Once they had reached the end of the pitch, they both came around and headed back the way they had come—but faster, now. Cara hadn't been sure what, exactly, 'full' speed and 'half' speed denoted, but she had kept up with Daniel nonetheless, catching and returning the quaffle without too much trouble.

"You're doing pretty well!" Dan yelled over the wind as they accelerated down the pitch "Just try and let it become reflex!" Cara was doing really well considering her lack of experience. "Now try and keep close to me, we'll try some manouvers while passing! Try and stay parallel!" Dan took off vertically after he caught the pass, hoping she could keep up. He'd teach her how he'd learnt, throw her in the deep end and hope she'd swim.

"You're doing pretty well!"

"Thanks!" Cara shouted back, braided hair whipping against her shoulders mercilessly in the wind.

"Now try and keep close to me, we'll try some maneuvers while passing! Try and stay parallel!"

"Oh—goodness—okay!" she replied—but he had already taken off!

Cara zoomed upwards, attempting to catch up. Once she had, she kept herself roughly in line with Daniel, at his right side, as they climbed higher into the air. She kept her eyes peeled for any movement from her classmate, her hands primed to snatch at the quaffle if he threw it her way.

The wind whipped against Dan's face as they got higher and higher. He was very glad that he had learnt a spell to keep his hair in place as his ponytail used to annoy him so much when he flew. He threw a pass to Cara as she caught up to him, yelling as he did
"Now remember to keep focused," He flashed a smirk, "Of course I can't exactly talk, I get distracted sometimes. Once I fell of my broom cause a girl in the stands blew me a kiss"

Cara tittered, her voice mostly lost to the howling wind as she reached out and took hold of the passed quaffle. She returned it to him as he spoke.

"Now remember to keep focused. Of course I can't exactly talk, I get distracted sometimes. Once I fell of my broom cause a girl in the stands blew me a kiss."

She laughed at this—not cruelly, of course, but thoroughly amused.

"I suppose that's as good a reason as any to lose focus," Cara called back, grinning.

"Yeah it is" Dan yelled back , laughing hard and missing the quaffle as she passed it back. He swore, quickly diving after it before motioning for Cara to follow him to the ground. "Time to take a bit of a water break I think," Dan said with a smile, "Otherwise I won't be able to teach you much, my voice is dying a little with all this shouting."
