name:     Jonah Elliot Lassiter

city & country of birth:     Southwark, London, England
blood purity:     Muggleborn
house & year:     Slytherin, 5th year
wand:         12 inches, yew, unicorn hair. Pliable with a spiraled shaft.

Physical Description:
Jonah is a stringy, angular boy who gives the impression of a foal not yet grown into his legs. Standing at 5 feet, 8 inches, he likes to claim that his 145 pounds are "all muscle" - they're not, he's just naturally skinny due to a fast metabolism. He has messy, blond-or-brown-depending-on-the-light hair which he's constantly brushing out of his dark eyes.

At home and on holiday, Jonah's preferred clothes include tee-shirts under flannels and scuffed blue jeans, but for class he trades out his beloved graphic tees for button shirts and sweater-vests. He's not too self-conscious about his looks, but he finds the weight of an added layer comforting, often leading to such questions as, "why are you wearing that sweater, it's a beautiful day" from his friends and mother alike.

Personality Description:

Much about Jonah can be described as "sharp," from his elbows to his tongue to his reflexes. An immensely quick learner, he has a knack for understanding the practical applications of what he's learning and little patience for anything he deems not useful, which has brought down his History of Magic grade quite a bit over the years.

This utilitarian attitude has the unfortunate tendency of carrying over to Jonah's personal relationships. While someone is useful or entertaining to him, he treats them well, joking and messing around as teenagers do. But when they are no longer interesting or useful, he drops them, acting cold and sometimes downright cruel. Even when being kind, his sense of humor is dry and sarcastic, though more often than not he is the butt of his own joke.

Despite his self-deprecating tendencies, Jonah actually has quite reasonable self-esteem. He has an easygoing, laid-back manner that others often find contagious, and if he's perhaps a bit lazy, well. He's just saving energy by not trying very hard at the unimportant things in life.

History:

Jonah is the first and only child of Charles Lassiter and Anna Carson, both muggles. His father works as a professor at a muggle university in London, and his mother is a bank teller. London is also where Jonah grew up, the sole recipient of his parents' love and attention. He played well with other children when asked to - usually - but never seemed to seek them out, which worried his parents. What worried them more was when he didn't play nicely - bad things seemed to happen to the children who wouldn't give Jonah the toys he wanted, and though nothing could ever be pinned to Jonah, it was all too suspicious to ignore.

Eventually, Jonah's parents stopped expecting him to play with others. In primary school, he was the kid who had a new best friend every week, who was both admired and hated by those not given the chance to bask in his glow. The only relationship he had with any staying power was with his cat, a long-haired tortoiseshell tabby named Malka. When at age 12 he received his letter from Hogwarts, he said an unimpassioned goodbye to his parents, took Malka with him, and ran headfirst through the wall between Platforms 9 and 10 and into the wizarding world, never looking back.

At Hogwarts, Jonah continued on in much the same way he had at first. Despite a few hiccups early on, being a Muggleborn in the House most strongly associated with blood purism, he quickly established among his housemates that, regardless of his background, he espouses Slytherin values - clever, cunning, and able to turn most any situation in his favor. He has done well in all his classes (excepting History of Magic) - not a straight-A student (a phrase he continues to use despite the confusion it causes among those never attended muggle primary school) but still grades to be proud of. His is the report card that reads, "he could be top of the class if only he'd apply himself."

How Do You Fit Into Your House?:

Jonah sees the world only as it relates to him - things and people are either useful or they are not, entertaining or not, helpful in furthering his goals or not. He sees and manipulates situations so he is surrounded by what he deems important - and the rest can go rot.

Writing Sample:

For the ninth time in his life, Jonah Lassiter was aboard the Hogwarts Express. Less than an hour ago he had, as he had eight times before, made his way through the cars of the grand steam train to the third compartment in the fourth car; now, nestled against the cool glass of the window, he stroked the purring cat on his lap and thought of the first time he had made the journey to Hogwarts School for Witchcraft and Wizardry.

"Malka," he said to the cat, who twitched an ear in response, "can you believe it's been four years since then? You were so tiny that first time." He laughed easily, like he never did around other people. "So was I. Tiny and nervous. Not like now, eh?" The boy fell silent, remembering all that had changed since his first year at Hogwarts, for better or worse, and musing about what adventures his fifth year would bring.

Sum up your character in one paragraph:

Jonah Lassiter is a clever, charismatic boy with a manipulative streak a mile wide. Kind at one turn and cold at the next, he knows how to use the people around him to further his own goals and is not afraid of causing collateral damage if necessary.
