City & Country of Birth: July 7, 1977 (33)

Job/Position: Journalist for the Daily Prophet; Author

Wand:
Blackthorn with a unicorn hair core. It has a spiralled shaft and is rather springy. 9 ¾ inches. This wand was taken from him at Azkaban, but given back to him upon his release after the war.

Physical Description:
Handsome but certainly not memorable, Jin-Sun has kind, dark eyes with short lashes. With his soft face and full lips, he used to be self conscious of features that were commonly deemed to be feminine. As he grew older, he came into his looks and has grown into vanity. His body is taut and lean, despite his incorrigible coffee and pizza habit. His torso is covered in scars obtained in the war, though during his waking hours he uses his metamorphmagus ability to cover them.

As a teen, he was skinny and gangly-- that metabolism, though it has slowed down some, has followed him into adulthood. He is a man who finds it difficult to keep weight on. He usually has dark circles under his eyes and hasn't gotten a proper night of sleep in years. At this point, he's used to it.

His hair is thick and wiry but easily tamed. His mother insists that the way that he styles it adds too many centimeters to his height. Despite the roundness of his face, he has a well defined jaw and cheekbones. If asked, Jin-Sun would say that his dimpled smile and expressive eyebrows are award-winning traits that don't nearly get the appreciation that they deserve.

Personality Description:
Although introverted, Jin-Sun is not shy. At the first impression, he comes across as a mild-mannered person, agreeable and neutral. However, it only takes a couple conversations with him to realize that he is critical, sincere, Jin-Sun is many things. Tenacious. A risk taker. Critical but sincere. An avid reader and passionate writer. A horrible insomniac. A fan of psychological fiction, he is both fascinated and disturbed by the darker sides of human nature.

Snide and sometimes dismissive, he is only a good listener when it suits him. Sentimental, he has a strong memory of past events-- good and bad. He has a tendency to keep receipts on people who have wronged him, and holds a grudge like no other. Slow to forget, He is prone to making big, rash decisions when upset-- and insists that he doesn't regret them later.

His writing is fueled by late nights drinking coffee and pizza. Jin-Sun is a professional observer, a listener when it suits him or whatever project he is working on. His imagination and flair for drama made him a wonderful match for The Quibbler and later, Witch Weekly. Currently, he works for the Daily Prophet. Jin-Sun sees very little difference between the three publications, especially due to the fact that Rita Skeeter has been employed for many years now.

Those who know him well pick up on his self-destructive tendencies. Romantic relationships tend to go awry due to his jealous nature and love for contradicting others for the sake of contradictions. He can be touchy and indirect, passive aggressive when irritated. During his stronger moments, he is full of tenderness, frank with warm affections towards loved ones. He has high hopes for romance in his future, and is mostly unaware with how some of his rougher traits keep that at bay.

He lives in the moment and for the moment. Writing for his own satisfaction, and insists that everybody should live life to the full as you never know what could happen next. Jin-Sun sees no point in being stuck in a job you hate around people you dislike. Fortunately for him, he finds great satisfaction in writing, even at the cost of somebody else’s feelings. He is careful though, and prefers to write under an alias rather than through his real name. Stoney Bird is an alias that protects him and allows him to say what he (and everybody else!) is really thinking.  Only the necessary people know who Stoney Bird really is, and he takes full advantage of his metamorphmagus ability to keep it up.

History:
Born and raised in the New Malden area of London, Jin-Sun was born to two immigrants from Busan, South Korea. Muggleborn, his parents knew immediately that there wasn’t something quite right with their son-- his physical appearance kept changing before their eyes. The doctors and nurses who attended to his mother during the birth were shocked. To protect the statute of secrecy, obliviators and ministry officials alike had a huge job to clean up.

Unlike the majority of muggleborns, Jin-Sun’s magical intervention came early, and he grew up very aware of what and who he was. He knew he was going to go to a magical school one day.

His parents were at first, apprehensive. Within the Park household, there was a sense of pride and awe regarding Jin-Sun and his unique abilities. However, they were quick to tell him to hide it from his muggle friends and classmates as well as from extended family. With the help of a metamorphmagus sent from the Ministry, he learned to control his abilities early on, though strong emotions provided a challenge.

The summer he turned eleven, he received his acceptance letter to Hogwarts with excitement and threw himself completely into the wizarding world.

Slytherin was not the easiest house for a muggleborn to be sorted into. He found friends among open-minded Slytherins and fellow muggleborns. The majority of his closest circle, however, were not from his house. He wasn’t the most studious of students except when it came time for writing essays. His passion for writing started early, and even his homework assignments had a dramatic flair to it. Jin-Sun’s test-taking abilities, however, were poor. He firmly believes that test-taking is a poor indicator of knowledge learned, and hopes that the wizarding world eventually moves away from standardized testing as a whole. He scraped by with a handful of OWLS and later NEWTs.

In his seventh and final year of Hogwarts, the Triwizard tournament was in place. Sixth year Cedric Diggory and Fourth year Harry Potter were representing Hogwarts. Jin-Sun didn’t really care who won, as long as neither of them died in the process. He didn’t actively hate Harry, but he didn’t stand up for him either. Jin-Sun didn’t want to make a fuss, and instead did his best to enjoy the tournament, the Yule ball, and getting to know the Beauxbatons and Durmstrang students who stayed at Hogwarts for the year.

He also worked on his writing portfolio, with hopes to get hired at the Daily Prophet after graduation. He looked up to Rita Skeeter’s writing. Unfortunately, he was denied internships at both the Prophet and Witch Weekly. The Quibbler, however, was happy to have him.

Jin-Sun interned at the Quibbler for about a year before they gave him pieces to research. Once he started to write, he wrote under the alias “Stoney Bird” due to his love for the phrase, “Kill two birds with one stone.” He loved to write, and the writing doubled with a purpose-- to inform and educate the wizarding world. The Stoney Bird alias was a protective measure, as he often wrote with skepticism about the ministry and the direction it was going. He also espoused some anti-purist rhetoric at a dangerous time.

On August 1, 1997, the ministry fell. Jin-Sun Park immediately went into hiding and Stoney Bird fell silent for the rest of the wizarding war. He found a group of other muggleborns including Rory Murdock, Maiko Biladeau-Yukawa, and Ryannon Sage who were also in hiding, and together they took care of each other. They were caught and tormented by snatchers. One of the group members eventually created a diversion, and some escaped. He was among those who did not, and was sent to Azkaban for the remainder of the war.

Once he was released, he was sent to St. Mungos to recuperate after being exposed to dementors for so long. After a few months, the Quibbler welcomed Stoney Bird back to work with open arms, and he wrote a long editorial piece about the experiences of muggleborns in Azkaban. This was, by far, the most serious tone he had ever accomplished in a piece of writing.

It took about a year for his humor and dramatic flair to creep back into his writing. He made his way to Witch Weekly, where he met his dear friend Koko Yukawa, aka Lil Snigger. He took his alias with him to each job. In 2004, he finally achieved his dream of working at The Daily Prophet with his childhood idol, Rita Skeeter. Under his actual name, he has published several short stories in young adult fiction (suspense, humor, and romance), but nothing substantial.

Lately, he has been writing news in a lighthearted manner, searching for stories that are unique and humorous. In his spare time, he writes for fun. Jin-Sun hopes to publish a young adult suspense-thriller novel sometime in the next year that takes place during the second wizarding war with Adelaide Fortescue as his agent. With her help, some of his short stories have been published with Trollhouse Publishing.

Describe your job duties and how you go about them:
Jin-Sun’s job is to get the latest scoop on all things interesting that could possibly be counted as ‘news.’ With his Stoney Bird alias, he is usually in disguise when on the hunt for a story. All interviews are conducted discreetly, and no one (besides his closest coworkers and boss) knows who exactly Stoney Bird is.

Under Jin-Sun Park, he publishes his fiction work with the help of his agent, Adelaide Fortescue.

Elaborate on your expertise in your field:
He has been in the field of journalism for over 13 years in one way or another.

Writing Sample:

Sum up your character in one paragraph:
Jin-Sun is a creative, dramatic writer with many articles under his belt. He may not be the easiest friend to have, but he can certainly be loyal. He has many opinions, and they are all incredibly strong ones. As a metamorphmagus, he uses his ability to further advance his career and his writing. When he is not engrossed in his writing, he enjoys seeing plays, karaoke, and late night/early morning pizza.

Special Ability

Character Name: Jin-Sun Park
Age: 33
Character Biography:
Do any of your other Characters have Special Abilities?: Yes
If Yes, then Please provide their name and a link to their bio:
Maiko Biladeau-Yukawa, Seer
Adelebert Hughes, Animagus
Mihai Zamperia, Leglimens
Zel and Emeline Trumble, Werewolves

Special Ability: Metamorphmagus

What level is this ability at?: N/A

At what age did your character gain this ability?: He was born with it.

How did they learn or hone this ability?:
He’s always known he was a metamorphmagus, but his ability has been carefully honed and practiced since he was very young. Due to his muggleborn upbringing, the ministry sent several known metamorphmagus and ministry officials who coached him into controlling his powers in order to protect the statute of secrecy. Once he reached his teenage years, his control over his powers strengthened. The stability of adulthood and his career have allowed him to hone the details. As a result of the deception sometimes involved with his career, Jin-Sun has also become a decent (but far from perfect) actor.

Describe how the Special Ability influences their life.  What do they use it for?:
It influences every aspect of his life. As a teen, he used it to hide blemishes. As an adult, he uses it to keep the identity of Stoney Bird a mystery. In his personal life, he uses it to hide his scars obtained during the wizarding war, his time with snatchers, and his time in Azkaban. He believes that he would not have gotten as far in journalism as he has without being a metamorphmagus.

Write a description of what happens when your character is exhibiting this Special Ability:
With great speed, he can change his physical appearance-- coloring, height, weight, gender. Clothes, however, do not change.
