[Feb 25th - ???] Open Season (Lyndon)

on June 18, 2016, 07:25:29 AM

A casual note written on Ministry stationary, arriving late in the afternoon

To: Lyndon Harper, Ramora Club. Knockturn Alley.

From: Balfour Spectre, Beast Division. Ministry of Magic.

25th February

Lyndon Harper!

One of our many handlers mentioned going down to your club for drinks the other night, and I was going to tell them that I knew you from school days - but knocking balls around the Quidditch pitch seemed too tenuous a link to brag about. Should we correct this?

You'll forgive my social negligence since the epidemic[1]
I hope, though my appearance in the papers has left little to be desired in terms of presence[2].

I pray that you're in good health and watched over by the usual array of malevolent gods.

Yours,

Well hello there stranger. How nice it is to here from you! I did wonder how long it would be until you remembered about little ol' me. I hope you're not secretly writing to sweeten me up so I don't put my two knuts in at the Prophet about when we used to 'knock balls around the Quidditch pitch' - if that's what they're calling it these days!

Still, it's delightful to hear from you, and that article gave me quite the giggle. I thought causing a scene wasn't your style, I feel a little cheated that I missed out on this drama queen side of you.

Ah yes, the epidemic. It's alright, work comes first. Besides, I've hardly been keeping the most social hours since Ramora opened.

I'd say come down and visit the club some time, but I'm almost certain the Prophet would be all over that.
Lyn.

I don't remember anything being little nor old about you, Lyn -  then again, maybe we are both getting on in terms of age and I'm just in denial of it! Time to take up a smoking pipe over cigarettes.

How has London been treating you, by the by? I've always been a showman but my behaviour really was unforgivable, Ascendio that night. You must meet Johann. He brings out that particular colour in me and I think I'm beginning to enjoy it. Would you believe I've fallen in love? I write poetry now, and surely you would laugh to see the state of it all.

Witch Weekly will have a ball even if I came down with Joh. I can just picture the headline: Beast Division Head and foreign boyfriend seduced by notorious Jazz Club owner.

Too verbose for Lil Snigger, maybe. Well. I'll drop by some time in March anyway if you'll have an old friend for drinks.  Never mind the press.

Oh my ego has missed you Balfour. Though can you honestly picture me with a pipe? I'd rather die. Though I must admit that I have already mostly traded in cigarettes for cigars, and I feel that this too is showing my age.

London is what it is. I'd rather be in Milan or Dubai, but there we go.

Honestly, must I meet Johann? I'm not at all sure that we would have much in common, and the kind of things that we do have in common, are probably not the kinds of things that one should talk about over the dinner table.

Also, poetry?! How ghastly! I don't know whether to feel lucky or jealous that you never wrote poetry back when I knew you best.

Notorious! Oh there you go again with the flattery Mr Spectre! Perhaps it runs in the family, because your dear cousin Nona, seems to posses the same flare for it as well!

March,  is your social calendar truly that stacked now that you're a man in love, or do you just enjoy making me wait for the pleasure of your company?

But of course I would love to have you and you alone over sometime soon. Bring the press with you, my ego could use all the attention it can get.

Lyn.

Fenrir's flanks, friend! Lyndon Harper, afraid to make a new acquaintance? If I didn't know any better I would suspect you of trying to ambush me. But it would be wiser to have a more private reunion if that's what you desire - this new Balfour writes poetry, and so the new Lyndon must be permitted allowances as well.

If or when you do meet Johann, I promise he will behave (though he is sometimes the one who must promise that I will), and he speaks beautifully enough that the content could hardly matter.

Well. All Spectres are excellent with flattery but you can hardly accuse me of having a dear cousin; with ten aunts and uncles, they are too many of our ilk to be dear. You have your work cut out for you! Now, I would ask you to treat Nona well - except she has long outgrown being looked after by boorish old cousins, so I will only wish you good luck.

Should we do a late lunch on Monday, if you are so eager? As much as I love to make a man wait (and wait, and wait) I'd hate to miss out on seeing an old face.
