Wand: A respectable, unassuming 10-inch rowan wood wand with a unicorn hair core.  There is nothing particularly outstanding about it, but Freddy has been known to pack quite a punch with it when in Defense class or Dueling club.

Physical Description:
Freddy is solidly Radley in most ways.  He has a friendly face, somewhat sleepy hazel eyes, and a wide, goofy smile that often takes over most of his face.  He is starting to lose his baby fat and the lines of his face are coming out more and more as he gets older.  He’s got a sort of broad nose and full eyebrows.  His hair is a mousey brown color and kept on the short side, which he prefers to wear neatly (you’d be hard pressed to find him with bedhead).  He can almost grow a beard too… almost.

Always the active sort, Freddy isn’t like… built, but he’d be considered solid.  His shoulders are broad, he looks strong, but he was unfortunately not blessed with the Radley height.  Freddy is only 5’8” which is respectable for the regular population, but when he goes home he has female cousins who are younger than him that are inches above him.  It’s embarrassing.

He dresses plainly, preferring simple t-shirts and jeans to anything spectacular.  If he’s being forced to dress up, some kind of button down over a t-shirt or a proper sweater are his versions of fancy.  No one would call him a fashion plait, but he’s not running around looking a mess either.

Personality Description:
Freddy is, first and foremost, a momma’s boy.  Making his mother happy and proud of him motivates everything he does.  He has a deep sense of responsibility to her and the rest of his family, so he takes school seriously and wants to do well.  He is goal oriented and is fairly certain of what he wants to do – or at least the line of work he wants to go into.  Though he’d really like to be an auror, he isn’t sure he’s smart enough for the line of work.  So, he doesn’t like to commit to saying anything too specific, in case he fails.  This is especially true around family who point out all too often that he looks – and acts – just like his deceased uncle.  Those are big shoes to fill and as someone he worshipped as a child, Freddy takes it very seriously.

He is passionate about school and the subjects he is good at, as a result, can be kind of a nerd about things.  He gets excited easily and wants to share the things he learned.  He is a good tutor and enjoys working with other students who need help.  Additionally, he loves to practice with students who are better than him to refine his skills.  He is humble and always sees where there is room to get better.  The idea of being the best at anything baffles him.

Even though he does have anxiety about the future and doing the right thing, he is actually quite emotionally even most of the time.  He is slow to anger or show any intense emotions.  When he is angry, however, he is prone to holding a grudge.  Freddy will forgive, but he doesn’t forget and trust is hard won once it is lost.  He is a loyal person so when that is violated, he is hard pressed to accept people back into his life after they’ve done something like that.

His strong sense of right versus wrong often makes him stubborn and Freddy is prone to thinking that he is right in most circumstances because obviously he is the most responsible one around.  He has an inflated sense of his maturity that is definitely not always true.  He is still a sixteen-year-old boy, after all, and the right choice is impossible to make 100% of the time.  This doesn’t mean he is easy on himself, however, and Freddy often takes it very personally when he messes up.  Small things can turn into huge problems that way.

Additionally, as friendly as he can be, Freddy is hard pressed to communicate effectively to girls he finds attractive.  His female friends? Fine.  He is cool with them, but any girl who makes his heart speed up and palms sweat? Forget it.  He is hopeless.  It’s really obvious when Freddy has feelings for people, which is why he is an avoider.  He will run the other way just to keep from embarrassing himself.  The pride of being a rational, sane person (hah!) makes it impossible for him to admit this is a real problem.

History:
Francine Radley was always very close to her family.  She grew up in Piddlehinton, a village that essentially grew to accommodate the ever-extending Radley family tree and just absorbed those that married into it.  Everyone assumes everyone is a cousin in some way, and though there is an extensive family tree kept at the Green Goblin it has hardly ever been cracked open.  Regardless, when Francine got pregnant by her Hogwarts sweetheart, Nelson White, he jumped ship.  The Radley family was what was left to fall back on.

Leola, family matriarch, employed Francine at the Green Goblin and everyone in the extended family saw to it that the newly graduated Franny was taken care of, despite her boyfriend’s sudden disappearance.  Similarly aged friends and family assured her she didn’t need him and that he was a loser anyway.

Unfortunately, like most things in Francine – and no doubt Freddy’s life – unexpected circumstances led to a much more dramatic situation than expected.  New Year’s Eve is one of the busiest days for the Green Goblin and though Franny was eight and a half months pregnant, she insisted on working.  The tips would help with baby supplies and she couldn’t miss out on a revenue night.  Leola tried to caution her against it… but there was no saying no to Franny.

She showed up to work and about halfway through her shift… the contractions started.  The midwife (Carol Kemp) was called and Freddy was born in one of the rentable rooms above the pub while the crowd below rang in the New Year.

Fred was named for Franny’s oldest brother, a hitwizard who she looked up to and hoped her son would end up like.  As it turned out, Freddy picked up on the idea and as he got older, he looked up to his Uncle Fred (and other relatives in law enforcement).  By the time he was three, if asked what he wanted to do when he grew up, he’d brandish a stick and declare “hitwizard” or “auror” depending on the audience.

Of course, he was just as likely to be running around playing auror as he was to be practicing on his low flying broom or asking anyone to read a book to him.  When he finally learned to read for himself that quickly became one of his favorite hobbies.  He never had any indication that they struggled financially, nor that his mum had no idea what she was doing as a seventeen-year-old mother.  He just thought she was the best thing in the world and that they were the happiest family they could be.  The rest of the family never really let the struggles be obvious and they were always around, especially Uncle Fred who became the adult male figure in his life in the absence of his father.  When Freddy was seven, his uncle was killed in the line of duty.    It was a huge blow to Francine and little Freddy.  The other family members did step up, but it wouldn’t replace Frederick.

Francine dimmed to some degree, and Freddy, in a small way, understood that he needed to step up.  He helped mum cook and clean, he cleaned glasses at the Green Goblin while mum was working because sometimes they needed the help, and if he delivered anything to a table and they gave him a few knuts or sickles for his trouble, he’d always give it straight to mum (who would then put it in his piggy bank).

When it came time to go to Hogwarts, Freddy cried.  He wouldn’t admit it now, obviously, because that’s not what you do, but he did.  He didn’t want to leave his mum behind and alone.  It took an entire summer of convincing and a trip to Diagon to get all of the things he needed for him to warm up to the idea and even get a little excited about it.  It didn’t mean, however, that at the Hogwarts express he didn’t hug her for a little too long or sit alone on the train for a bit and mope before the trolley came and he could eat a little bit of chocolate to perk up.

Being at school though, that was amazing.  The storybooks didn’t hold a candle to the reality.  He was sorted into Hufflepuff, like so many Radleys before him, and he sort of just… fell into it.  School was something he was surprisingly good at!  Though he wasn’t the loudest (not by any means in his year), Freddy did well at school and never hesitated to write home about the things he was doing and how well he was doing it.  He wanted to make his mum proud of him and hopefully be able to help her out for the rest of her life.

He also wanted to make his Uncle Fred proud and maybe follow in his footsteps.  It turned out that Freddy has a lot of talent in wand working classes, Defense and Charms are his two strongest classes, followed by Transfiguration, then potions, and finally muggle studies (not so much for the wand work, but it’s interesting to him!)  All of these things would no doubt help him in his aspirations toward law enforcement.  He tutors other students, both in his year and younger, if they ask for it because he is talented and understands how to explain it, not just the magic itself.  Some have suggested he’d be a good professor one day, but Freddy is too humble (insecure) to consider that.

As a result of his childhood, Freddy seems to take on the role of responsible one amongst his classmates.  He tries to point out the “right” option, whenever possible and be a good role model.  He avoids trouble because he doesn’t want anything stressful getting back to his mum, but if his friends are pulled into mischief, he can often be found tagging along fretting the entire way.

How Do You Fit Into Your House?:
Freddy is like the poster child of Hufflepuff.  He is loyal, steadfast, and hard working.  Endlessly humble, he works on bettering himself instead of assuming he’s the best.  He is also insecure, trying to prove himself, and fill the shoes of family members who have come before him.  He lives to please, likes helping others, and finds hard work more rewarding than shortcuts.

lolol so cute. no thanks.

Sum up your character in one paragraph:
Freddy is a momma’s boy with a good heart, good head on his shoulders, and a strong moral compass.  He has a lot to live up to, being a Radley and doesn’t want to let anyone in his family down.  At school, he’s a poster boy for the essence of hufflepuff, he is loyal and even-tempered (unless there’s a girl he likes in the room, then he’s quickly leaving it) and wants to support the people around him. In all senses, he is a cinnamon roll that is too pure for this world.

Character Name: Frederick Radley
Title Applying For: Hufflepuff Prefect, 5th year male
Character Biography: LINK

What Experience has Prepared You For This Honor?:
Freddy has always been the responsible sort.  He hands in assignments on time, participates in class, and tries to make the proper choices at all times.  He is friendly with a wide variety of people and isn’t the kind to ruffle feathers or offend others unless they’ve been offensive first.  He approaches situations rationally and does his best to stand up for what’s right, even if it’s his good friends.  Is he always successful? No, but no one’s perfect.

He does have other recommending qualities though.  For instance, he frequently tutors other students in the subjects he excels in.  He enjoys it and takes pride in helping others be successful.  Professors also generally like him for being a good student and active participant in class.

What Do You Think the Most Important Aspect of This Job Is:?
Helping classmates is probably the most important part of being a prefect.  Whether that’s helping by tutoring, helping by encouraging good choices, or even organizing an event for others, the whole point is to be useful to those around you.  Freddy likes to be useful and support others.

He also believes if you’re being a good example, encouraging the proper choices, and promoting academic excellence you’re upholding order and you don’t even need to worry about the rules.  Until you do, that is, and rules exist to keep people (on the whole) safe.  Freddy believes this (particularly as someone who wants to go into law enforcement) is also a very important part of being a prefect.

Tell a Story From Your Past That Has Proven Your Mettle:
Fred is an excellent tutor.  He primarily tutors on wand subjects, but he is not unfortunate in any specific class.  With an overall grasp of academics, he can be of use to almost any student at any given point.  As a tutor, he is kind and hands on.  He is patient and slow to anger, which also make him an excellent candidate for dealing with others.  These skills translate well to dealing with students in other situations.  Rather than being quick to judge and take action (it is not always the best choice), Fred can listen to what was going on and make a sound, reasoned judgment.  This even applies to his friends.  He is willing to be the voice of reason and the final say if it is necessary (for the more stupid choices they can make).

If there is any doubt in his mind, Fred is also humble enough to ask for advice and support from others.  He will go to his head of house or the Head Students (even if both of them are kind of terrifying this year) for a second opinion.  He’s willing to grow, learn, and wants to be a good prefect so he works at it, just like everything else he does.
