“You didn’t mean to offend me?” Maya wasn’t sure if she was more upset or angry. She wasn’t sure if she was more bothered by the comments because her and JJ had had a relationship during their teenage years and they had history. Had he simply been a work colleague, she probably wouldn’t have cared what he had to think. But JJ was someone that, despite what Maya said, she had an emotional attachment to. JJ had been her first love and to have him think those things…

“What part, JJ, of being the emotionally defective daughter of Satan isn’t offensive?” She still glowered at him, the tears pushed away, replaced by anger. Her daughter was upstairs hopefully sleeping. This was not the evening Maya had had planned.

"I didn't mean to offend you, but you asked!" JJ defended himself, "Do you expect me to lie to you? It doesn't mean I like you less. You can't control how you were raised." Sure, she could control how she treated others and her coldness, but he understood why. There was an explanation. It wasn't exactly an excuse, but it was an explanation. And he knew it wasn't exactly something she could change overnight.

"All things considered, you're... Decently adjusted. You're alright." He wouldn't go as far to say that Maya was a 'well adjusted' person.

Either way, JJ was certainly not doing a good job at calming her down.

"Sorry, alright? Is that what you want to hear?" Goddammit, JJ.

In all his years, it appeared JJ still hadn’t learnt than when in a deep hole, you needed to stop digging. Instead of taking past experiences, JJ continued to dig, continued to aggravate his ex-girlfriend and make that hole far too deep to crawl out of.
As he spoke, Maya simply stared. Her dark eyes narrowed, brows lowering into a glare as he commented that she couldn’t help how she was raised, that was ‘decently adjusted’ and that he was only saying sorry because that was what she wanted to hear.

As well was being rather offended, Maya was feeling more and more secure in her decision to dump him when she did.

“I don’t want to hear sorry from someone that isn’t sorry.” Her accent was strong, her voice purposefully quiet due to the sleeping child upstairs. “Are you still bitter than I dumped you?”

What. The. Hell.

How did this conversation even get to this point?! Bitter about her dumping him years ago? If he was bitter about every person who ever dumped him, JJ would've been the most unhappy person in the world. Still, the words stung. "Fine then," He said darkly, "If you don't want to hear me say sorry, I take it back." Probably not the smartest thing to say, but he frankly didn't care about that at the moment. This entire conversation was full of JJ's idiocy, and he wasn't about to stop being an idiot any time soon.

"I--" JJ didn't even know how to respond. Except to flee.

"Good night, Maya." He said through gritted teeth, suddenly in a hurry to leave. He made his way out of the kitchen, hesitating for a brief moment before he got to the front door. No. He had to commit all the way. JJ left the house, hoping that this wouldn't make work awkward.
