Far from the Maddening Crowd

on April 17, 2016, 09:52:43 PM

It was quiet in the library. Most people were doing other things at ten o'clock on a Saturday.  Olivia found it to be the best time to study in the library. It was a ghost town, especially in the middle of the dusty old stacks. No one really sought out the table nestled between old books in the warren of shelves. If anyone was in the library they'd be in the cheery seats by the windows. Olivia didn't like distractions when she was studying. It was important to give all of her attention to her lessons. She didn't want to waste time looking out a window. She wanted to do things right the first time.

Pausing from her reading, she glanced at her wrist watch. She nibbled at her lip wondering if  Llywelyn would show. She had questions to ask. Letting out a gusty shy she went back to the book on the history of centaurs. Why were there centaurs in the world? What possible reason could there be for their existence? Should wizards actually try and preserve them? What was the point? Sometimes Olivia was flabbergasted by the very existence of some magical creatures. They were almost like god to her. A strange entity she just didn't understand.

It was time to see Olivia. Llywelyn had butterflies in his stomach which was common when he and she would meet for their study sessions. He found it strange that he was always a little nervous, they'd been doing this since first year, he had the knowledge and understanding, and Olivia was a determined student. He enjoyed explaining things to Olivia, and sharing his opinions with her. He felt like he could just be himself around her. It was nice; their study sessions were a release from his constant anxiety and fear.

Llywelyn made his way to their usual spot that was off in a quieter corner surrounded by books. When he saw hear he gave her a slight smile. He settled in the seat next to her and laid his bag on the table in front of them and began unloading his History of Magic textbook.

"H-Hullo Olivia." he said his voice low, and his eyes avoiding hers.

Things were not going good for Olivia. She'd reread the paragraph on centaur rituals three times. First, she didn't understand why they had to spend so much effort on a species that was dying. Second her mind kept picturing the centaurs in  Disney movies like Fantasia and the Chronicles of Naria, which was not helping her studying. Her mind kept drifting. It was so annoying and her frustration just kept rising. She liked learning but she did better if she knew the reason why learning something was so important.  What was the point in learning about centuars? They were rare and lived in isolated areas. She just needed the basics and it seemed to her they were spending a lot of time on them. Who cared about the details of a centuar war?

When Llywelyn arrived she was relieved. She nodded her head in greeting as she spoke. "I hope we finish centuars quickly. I keep thinking of them as frolicing wine drinkers that frolic with angels or fighters from the Narnia movies." She said her tone a bit wry.

"What do you want to study today?" She asked as she skimmed through her lecture notes.

Llywelyn grinned at that. It had been a long time since he had watched a film, but he remembered them when he was a smaller lad, before he discovered his magical aptitude. He, like Olivia, wasn't too keen on learning about Centaurs. He found it hard to relate to man-horse creatures that lived in the forest. He'd much prefer if they were learning about other wizards, and witches, but oh well.

"What do you want to study today?"

"I guess we could read up more on those blasted Centaurs, so we wouldn't have to follow along in class or whatever." Llywelyn said quietly with a shrug. He wasn't quite sure what he wanted to study today, so he figured getting ahead would be for the best. He began to flip through the textbook to find the correct chapter with a sigh.
