Primrose,

I can't stand it any longer, I need a prison break! There are no holidays, and my birthday isn't for 11 months. Not even a Hogsmeade day in sight. Do you think you could come collect me? Neely always talks about her delicate being. Maybe it's a family trait. I'm sure you could convince them it is. I could convince them it is, but, you know, it sounds nice coming from an adult. Just a weekend at home, and I'll be good as new! I mean, my nose does look a bit red today. My concealer is almost out, too. And there's no way I'm going to the hospital wing for Pepper-Up Potion. This face needs dewy spring skin and new sunglasses, not red ears to match my nose.

Please, please let me come see you.

Accio summer.

Love,
Hattie

PS: What do we think of this outfit?

Hattie,
I am so sorry that you are not enjoying the spring semester as much as you could.  The weather should be improving soon so you won't feel so cooped up inside! If not, I hope my gift will at least help a little, in the absence of an excuse to leave.

You know as well as I do that I can’t just come collect you.  I don’t exactly have sway with the Hogwarts board of governors and you don’t have a real reason for coming home as much as I miss you!  It has been such a terrbly difficult month – though, there was a week during February where both Amaryllis and Marigold were in Rome and it was blissfully quiet in the house.  You know I don’t mind Maree, but I will never stop her from taking the other one away for any period of time.

Apparently it was lovely and there were many handsome Italian wizards around, but if you want those details you’ll have to owl them!  I stopped listening through most of that bit… Amaryllis and I talked about a vacation this summer.  Switzerland (chocolates!) is an option, so maybe it’s something to keep your mind occupied while you’re waiting for the summer to arrive.

Until then, please continue to write!  I’m sure it can’t be all that bad anyway.  You have a way of finding fun.  What have you been up to?  Tell me everything.

Your loving sister,
Primrose

PS: Conferred with mum, we both preferred either of these options… (I hope you’re happy, I had to dig through many albums to find these!) They’re much more age appropriate!

Attached to the letter is a parcel with several goodies for her dear sister!  The facial products requested, a pair of sunglasses, and some champagne truffles.

Prim,

Why are you slacking on these owls? I see that date! I always write you back right away because you give me treats and are my cool older sister!

Your gift was a m a z i n g, so I forgive you. Seriously, keep it coming, sis. I look so good in these sunglasses. They match my bra!

You absolutely could come collect me. Don't tell me you've never argued with the governors, Primmy. I know you could talk circles around them. Please, please, please! We can have our own holiday. I promise I'll be quiet, and your bliss will continue. With a tan. We could go to Switzerland early! It's unjust that Marigold should do all of the traveling or lounging at home. Papa must miss me, too, but I think you should maybe keep me in the girl's wing for a bit to get him used to the idea of Hattie-out-of-school-before-the-summer. You wouldn't want him owling the old governess.

But if you REALLY want me to stay in school, they're bringing in a panel to talk to us about SEX.

That's what I'll be up to. Besides restyling that sweater!

What about you? Why is this month 'difficult?' When are you coming to break me out?

Attached to the letter is a small bag of sweets.  But much smaller than the last gift.

Hattie,

You know, sometimes I don’t write back right away because I’m busy collecting the things you ask for, Miss Woolfolk!  I’m only trying to make your mandatory stay at Hogwarts a slightly brighter one.   Next time, however, I shall ignore your requests and just send your letter, sans gifts straight away.  Thank you for letting me know!  It was so much trouble to do all of that extra work, you’ve really saved me some time!

Unfortunately, it is now my time to really put my foot down.  It’s better that you stop asking about home at all; otherwise I can see to it that you won’t be going back to Hogwarts next year!  Then you’ll deal with the old governess all year long.  I’d offer her a handsome sum to make sure she did – and never let you out ever.

Clearly, that’s the best course of action.  Don’t go writing such things down, Hattie! I’m sure the information will be valuable to you, but it isn’t that big of a deal.  Once you know about it you won’t care so much.  You don’t see any of your sensible sisters worrying about it, do you?

I have much bigger things to worry about.

The Legilsature has blocked everything I’ve put forward and I’m working on my resubmission.  I am not feeling particularly confident about it, if I’m going to be honest.  I just… it gets so tiring to be denied at every turn (I guess I can sympathize with your insistence to come home).   Don’t you waste time worrying about it, however.  I'll do my best.

Maybe you should send me a gift instead, by the way.  I could really use it!

Your long-suffering sister,
Primrose

Prim,

I am crying.

Even the panel didn't get you?

The legislature must be really working you.

Sadly, I have no more savings to send you gifts. Prison's toll means that I've spent everything on homey comforts. But I'll find something special once Papa replenishes my allowance.

I still love you. But I'm still crying.

Hattie,

Lucky for me, your tears only induce sympathy when I can actually see them.  I do feel for you, of course, but you only have a few months left and you will push through!  Besides, it sounds as though you have enough distractions to keep you busy (as do I, clearly).  Find some study partners and try to make it fun.  You need to pass your OWLs.

I’ll speak to daddy about your allowance.   Or maybe I won’t! I guess you’ll find out soon, won’t you?

I love you too.  Stay strong, and if you need anything (except a prison break) I am only an owl away.

Love,
Prim

Prim,

Please send me Odette.

I'll do my OWLs and stay in school. I'll get straight O's. You know I will. I have big plans, anyway, so it's not like I'm not studying! Also send more money, yes, please, thank you. If you really love me, I know you will!

I love you, I love you. You're the best.

Dearest Hattie,

As much as I would love to send your precious ball of fluff via owl, there are several problems with this scenario.

1.  Odette is the natural prey of an owl.  You can see how this might be a disadvantage for little Odette.
2. It is against Hogwarts rules.  You may have a cat (no), rat (no), or your owl, which you have.  Not even you get to break those rules.
3. Odette is very happy here.  When the weather is nice I even let her outside into the yard (enclosed, of course!) to wander.

I do hope, however, that what I did send you will hold you over!  I didn't bother telling Daddy, since school is almost over anyway.  But, I always liked to have some chocolates by my side when I was studying, just in case I started to get tired.

I love you very much! Make sure you spend a good portion of time studying for your transfiguration practical and don’t forget to work on your counter spells for DADA!

Love,
Prim

Prim,

Our owls are not dumb! They know not to eat Odette. If they don't, they'll be banished from carrying my letters ever again, and I'll need a new owl in addition to my bunny. Honestly, rabbits are much cuter than rats and they actually learn things. When is the last time you saw a rat who was as smart and sweet as Odette? And cats find them even more delicious than owls find rabbits.

Plus, don't you want to nurture my sense of my responsibility?

I need her for my OWLs!

She'd love Hogwarts and the elves would love her. There's plenty of lawn space here.

If you really want me to go find a boyfriend to cuddle instead, though, I guess I could do that. After the sex education.

Thank you for the chocolate. It's an aphrodisiac, you know.

I love you, too! I'm off to practice those spells with my future boyfriend since Odette can't be with me.

Hattie

Hattie,

I’m not sure the owls would mind not carrying the post, to be perfectly frank.  Don’t tempt them with the prospect, in case one should learn how to read and set eyes upon your letter.  You will see Odette soon! You can coddle her all you want this summer, I’m sure she will be happier for it at home than at the drafty castle.

I am choosing to not engage in your terrible baiting and instead let you know I am coming to visit on the 20th!  I know you have a Hogsmeade weekend and your letters have been so… deflated recently and it’s only right I see you.  I know Mum signed your permission slip, so you can’t pretend you aren’t going and I’ll be terribly offended if you stand me up.

We will meet in front of the Quill shop in the early afternoon.  How does 13:00 sound to you?  Oh right, you don’t have a choice!

I will see you then.  Much love!

-Prim
