Dear Mr Spectre,

I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing to apply to the position of Apprentice Handler with the Beast Division of the Department for Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures. I am a hard-working Fifth Year student and I believe I will be able to fill this role with energy and enthusiasm.

I currently study Care of Magical Creatures, Herbology, Potions, Charms, Transfiguration, Defence Against the Dark Arts, History of Magic and Astronomy and will take my OWL examinations in a few months. I turn 17 in September and I am a Gryffindor Prefect. I also write for the Hogwarts Howler, the student newspaper.

Additionally, I enjoy helping Professor Donovan as much as I can outside of lessons to look after the school animals. I have been taught to handle hippogriffs, porlocks and a number of other beasts big and small as part of our lessons. I also visited a farm owned by Angus McBoid in the holidays and learned how to work with several breeds of winged horses.

When I am not helping with the animals, I really enjoy reading the magizoology periodicals in the library, including the Scottish Journal of Magizoology which Mr McBoid introduce me to. I have also been closely following the progress of the dragon illness this year and hope to write about it in my exams this summer as a case study. I was very interested to see people from the Division examining the lake last week. I tried to identify the way you cleaned the water in sections with potions, got air back into the water and removed debris.

I have always been very interested in Care of Magical Creatures, and it is my best subject by far as you can see from my mock OWL grades enclosed with this letter[1].

Please do not judge me on my OWL grades, Sir, Professor S Donovan who teaches Creatures at Hogwarts will be able to provide a reference for me, and I would be very happy to demonstrate my skills and understanding of beasts if you need me to. I promise you I will spend every waking hour working to reach the required standard for the opportunity to join the Department.

Thank you for your consideration and I hope I have the opportunity to hear from you soon. I hope to be an excellent match for your team.

Faithfully,

Ambrose Pepper

Dear Ambrose,

How pleasant to hear from you! Thank you very much for your polite request and for getting in touch so far ahead of time. You will find several official forms enclosed with this communication, courtesy of my efficient secretary - who you will most certainly meet come this summer - for you to fill out.

Any reference from Professor S. Donovan (or even the lesser Donovan) is one that I take into serious consideration. It does not sound to me like you lack any of the attributes necessary to one who wishes to begin their career in our division.

There will naturally be a preliminary trial interval of approximately three or four weeks, after which you will be assigned a permanent position as an Apprentice Handler. Please expect to hear from us closer to the summer to indicate when and where you must report to for first duties.

I look forward to personally welcoming you to the team. My regards to your family.

Sincerely,
