Nicholas hadn't been able to sleep. Well, no, actually he'd had a nightmare. Not that he was keen to admit that to anyone. And would keep it to himself even if caught by a professor. It was an embarrassing nightmare too. He'd failed all of his N.E.W.T.s and they'd told him he couldn't be a wizard anymore. And they'd broken his wand.
He hated to admit that he was worried about anything academic but ever since the internship with the obliviators, he'd been working harder to make sure he was prepared. The idea that he wouldn't make it had been keeping him up some nights, waking him up on others, and overall just making Nicholas more stressed out than he had been in years. And increasing his gillyweed and billywig budget as he tried to solve the problem in the easiest way he knew how. Not to mention the other distractions, but those carried their own risks.
But, after he woke in a cold sweat he couldn't get back to sleep. Which was frustrating, he'd barely even been asleep. It was barely two am and he was walking around the grounds, either trying to keep warm or make himself tired, or both, or neither. He really wasn't certain. And he was practically chain smoking just for something to do, other than look up at the stars. He'd have been practicing spells but between the noises and light it was a good way to get caught out of bed.
Of course that didn't stop him from shouting when he was hit in the head by a magazine while walking around the bottom of the astronomy tower.
[1] He was going to have a bruise on his head from the damn magazine. Who was one up this late, and two who the hell was throwing things from the top of the tallest tower. Not that he should be under it at the hour but damn, he'd done stupid shit but he usually just but himself in harms way.
He pulled out his wand and with a quiet "lumos" looked for the magazine that he'd been smacked with. Instead he found several. And all of them were porn. Which he barely had time to register before another magazine flopped on the ground from above. With a muttered curse and a silent shield spell, he moved away from the tower. For a moment he thought about going up to the tower and confronting whoever was up there. But, his better sense won out and instead, with a wave of his wand, the magazines flew toward his hand and hurried away from the tower before something heavier went over the edge.
At least now he had something new to tire himself out to. Not that he didn't have a bag with an undetectable extension charm full of his own magazines, but after a good sanitation charm, new material was always welcome.
