[Dec 17] Defence Against the Dark Arts - Fifth Years on December 13, 2015, 08:47:42 AM Your student has already arrived, unless you PM me to arrange to arrive late (with consequences), thanks.(Alvis Norling is absent due to poison plot, IIRC)The fifth years were in a naturally restless mood being the last Friday before Christmas. It was however a little strange to find a note attached to the first floor classroom door instructing them to meet the Professor on the third floor. Two floors up one found the armour gallery, trophy room and the charms classroom, but also a usual haunt for throwing practice curses before the lion caretaker, Mr Woodward found you. The ordinarily duty corridor was just as shadowy as ever, but there were a variety of strange lumps, bumps as if someone had filled it with furniture and junk from the room of requirement. Professor Storm was looking decidedly pleased with himself. Either it was down to the end of term and getting rid of the majority of them, or it was because something decidedly evil was about to happen to them all. He'd looked much the same before dunking them all in the lake. In the corridor, deeper down came a familiar cackle from Peeves. He had been recruited for a previous lesson with the second years, throwing crockery to help practice arresto momentum. Now with a narrow corridor full of obstacles, the poltergeist was back in his element, and began to sing a very rude rhyme out of sight. "Good afternoon fifth years." Professor Storm greeted. "We shall go through your mock examinations when we return in January. This I felt was a much more suitable last lesson for the term, and would prepare you for all that Christmas has to throw at you." There was a crash and a whoop from Peeves. "One at a time, with a time limit of three minutes, you will progress from here to the relative safety of the other end of the corridor. You will use spells from your OWL repertoire, and refrain from burning, flooding etc. the whole corridor for the sake of sport." His gaze crossed the faces of a few more capable students in the group. "Peeves will provide additional obstacles at his discretion. First up." He pointed at a student at random, the class parting around them. "On your marks…" Be creative, make mistakes, overcome difficulties, have something weird and wonderful happen, get injured, be drenched, run out of time, be turned a funny colour, do what you want as long as it's not really stretching the boundaries of what a fifth year can do and stays in character. It's one linear corridor with the doors off it sealed. Peeves can fling things at you and do whatever else he can think of. You control him for your character's travels. Have fun - don't wait for someone to prompt you to go, just post! Professor Storm awards more points for suitable amusement and creativity in how they get through as well as skill. Next was the look on Storm's face which certainly was not pleasant and made Ayla's skin crawl. She had often suspected that the crotchety old man enjoyed torturing his students, all in the name of 'teaching'. She was also too stubborn to admit that his teaching methods worked and she was getting increasingly better at DADA (though nothing compared to her skills in Charms and Transfiguration - they were the only Os she was expecting to get on her OWLS) The final straw in convincing Ayla that this was not going to be a good day was the familiar cackle of their resident Poltergeist Peeves. Ayla felt a sense of foreboding as Professor Storm pointed to her indicating that it was her turn. She took a deep breath and steeled herself. Drawing her wand, she mentally braced herself for what was to come and kept telling herself she could make it through. She was decent at some anti jinxes and deflector spells but she especially excelled in Shield Charms. If she could get a good enough one up she could make it through without any problems. At least that's what she hoped for.She entered the darkness of the corridor. She lit her wand tip with a simple Lumos but the light barely made it past her face. She should have known there'd be some kind of ward against lighting her way. That would have been too easy and Storm was certainly anything but easy. A quick Nox and the light was out. She kept her wand up though, ready to defend herself as she inched forward. She knew she'd need to quicken the pace even a little or else she'd run out of time but she couldn't seem to get her feet going.A quick whizzing sound got the adrenaline pumping and she threw up her wand hand, deflecting whatever it was that Peeves had thrown at her. She heard it shatter against the stone wall, along with a groan from Peeves "No fair"She weaved through a set of what may have been chairs or crates, it was hard to tell but with her focus on navigating the physical obstacles she wasn't paying much attention to the magical ones and felt a stinging jinx hit her bad shoulder. Ayla cried out and felt her knees weaken. Instead of falling however she threw up a shield charm, keeping any further attacks from catching her while she breathed through the pain and regained her composure. With the Shield Charm up she was able to travel through most of the corridor in what she thought was good time. She wished she was better at keeping track though. Inching earlier on, along with the almost fall she had taken after the stinging jinx had cost her more time than she thought. She began to feel a bit of panic at the sight of just how much more of the corridor was still left to traverse. She put on a burst of speed, hurtling a fallen cupboard, deflecting some more projectiles from Peeves and even stopping a few mid air before they could get to her. Her Shield Charm had faltered in her panic and was leaving her more vulnerable than if she had been completely focused. When she was about three or four feet from the end of the corridor an alarm sounded signaling the end of her three minutes. Ayla let out a growl of frustration just before something splashed over her head. Paint, possibly or something Peeves had stolen from the Potion Dungeon stores. It was thick and smelled horrible whatever it was and it was all over her head, "PEEVES!" Those lessons that left them cold and wet, or trudging to the hospital hut in the snow. He supposed they were probably better than book lessons, except he enjoyed the book lessons. He pulled his wand and dropped his bag near the wall before stepping forward now that it was his turn. He didn't even bother with lumos after seeing how useless it was for Ayla. Instead, he quickly moved into the corridor, or moved as quickly as he could while shuffling his feet so that he didn't trip over anything."Persecto!" He shouted his wand pointed at whatever had grabbed his foot. Which the red glow from the spell showed to be a broom handle. He might be a bit jumpy. But Storm had a way of causing that. Kelvin heard something flying through the air, he raised his wand and with the banishing charm sent it flying right back to Peeves. Who let out a satisfying expletive from the other end of the hall. Payback for at least some of the times the poltergeist had made life in the castle difficult.Of course, Peeves wasn't all the professor had set up in the hallway as Kelvin was reminded when his wand arm was hit with a dead limb hex. "Damnit." He bent down and searched the floor for his wand. All the while eating up precious time. He found it, but casting with his left arm was difficult. Not impossible but he hadn't done it often. Just when his right was occupied. He stayed down for a moment, thinking through his options before deciding on one that might not get points from Storm but would hopefully at least let him get through. He stood and with a shouted "Obex!" started moving headlong down the hallway. Objects in his way being pushed out by the shield, just enough that he didn't have to watch his step. Though, the next object that came flying at him went straight through the shield, grazing his numb arm, knocking him sideways a step which in a miracle of perfect timing for Peeves—something Kelvin was sure no other student had ever thought—kept Kelvin from getting hit by a hex that flew right past him. As he kept charging down the hall, the shield doing its bare minimum of pushing aside debris. Proof that one shouldn't use advanced spells without more practice. He dodged the next couple of objects that flew his way, but took two different stinging hexes, one to the butt and another to the chest. Strong ones too. He was definitely going to be sporting some welts at Christmas.A few steps from the end, he was pushed sideways by a blast of wind. Tripping over an upturned chair, he fell forward across the finish line just as the alarm sounded ending his time."YES!" He shouted, rolling over, his one good arm in the air in celebration. He caught movement in front of him, a bucket floating slowly toward him. He pointed his wand at the invisible poltergeist, "Don't you even dare!" With a loud raspberry, Peeves appeared, dropping the bucket and went to grab something to throw at the next person coming down the corridor.
