[15th Jan] And He's Done Some Evil Things That He Won't Tell

Alex read the article one last time before picking up the howler, making sure that she had learnt everything that she could from it before she began to dictate. It was disappointingly sparse on detail, but that was to be expected. With a frown, she tapped the parchment, and began to speak. Or, more accurately, yell.

Balfour,

Please explain to me why I heard that you got into a fight IN PUBLIC with your landlady through WITCH WEEKLY rather than hearing it from you -  not to mention why you got into a fight with your landlady in public in the first place, which is the more concerning part of the, well, generously a news piece. Did she raise your rent? Are you, as alleged, secret lovers? I thought you were perfectly happy being joined to Johann at the hip! Has something happened between you?

What are you doing, Balfour? Why were you covered in blood when you arrived? What was so pressing that you rushed to hit your landlady?

I hope you are otherwise well, and please write. I hate reading gossip columns.

Balfour collapsed into his chair in the dusty Study that used to belong to him at the Spectre estate. He watched the red envelope flutter to the desk once its purpose had been served, corners twitching angrily. Hearing Alex yell at him has temporarily pushed away any irritation he has felt towards Witch Weekly - it was much more important to scribble  a response right away this evening. The wizard rubbed his face tiredly before reaching for an old eagle feather quill and the closest roll of untarnished parchment.

Alex,

I'm terribly sorry you had to read about that in Witch Weekly. There wasn't much time and I was preoccupied. I am indeed perfectly happy to be joined to Johann at the hip among other places. And no, Ira Almasy is not my secret lover. We have had a disagreement over a subject I can't broach through correspondence.

Perhaps when we next meet?

I promise it is nothing you should worry yourself about. Johann and I are at the estate in Edinburgh for now and will return to London in a few days. It wasn't my blood (or dragon's blood) but we are safe.

P.S. It was a beautiful Howler, little bean. Love you.
