Wand: Maya has always shown great skill in defensive magic. Her wand is one that specialises in this sort of magic, rigid yet smooth, an Ivy wood with a dragon heartstring core.
Physical Description: Maya Elliot bears a striking resemblance to her mother as each have long dark hair, falling in messy waves, and dark brown eyes. Fortunately, she will gladly tell people, that is where the resemblance ends. A childhood of being outside on the ranch in Norway where her father kept the dragons means that Maya’s arms and legs are covered in small scars from close shaves with death and danger. Her skin is a soft olive shade, and covering her right forearm is an ornate dragon tattoo inked as soon as she was old enough.
Being a young mother with a low paying administration job means that Maya neither has the time nor money to dress elegantly and smarten herself up. When home her long hair is scraped messily back from her face and secured with a band. It is rarely much neater when at the ministry. Her clothing at work, however, is pristine. She dresses in smart dresses and robes to look presentable (and perhaps get on her boss’s good side).
Maya’s accent is clipped. She grew up in Norway speaking Norwegian outside of the family home until the age of 9 where she moved to Devon. Having had only her mother and mother’s family only speak to her in English during her younger years, her English is very much influenced by a Devonshire accent.
Personality Description: One of the first things family members would say about Maya is that she has a lot of wasted potential. Throughout school she was extremely clever, acing NEWTS in Defence Against the Dark Arts, Potions, Arithmancy and Care of Magical Creatures. While she has always rebelled against her mother, she was always a superb student. Her family would say that Bug the boyfriend was the defining factor in Maya’s reluctance to do well after school and find a profession to make the family proud.
Now, while still very smart, Maya doesn’t use her intelligence or her skills unless it is trying to manipulate people. She tries to get away with doing as little as possible and has an issue respecting authority. Ever since her father’s death when she was 9, Maya has been completely spoiled by her mother and, as a result, now expects the world to serve her. Her recent motherhood and new lack of funds has forced the young witch to open her eyes to the real world and start supporting herself and young Katrine.
Maya is a fiery soul, a witch with a short temper and an accomplished ability to argue. She has a strong sense of right and wrong and an addictive personality. During the last year Maya has been forced to grow up and turn into a mother and she has very slowly fallen into this role with a lot of difficulty. A naturally selfish person, she has struggled to put someone’s needs above her own and has therefore received a great deal of criticism. She only wishes now to prove herself.
History: Maya Ingrid Elliot was wanted by one parent. Jonathon Elliot had always wanted children. Miranda Elliot had not. Jonathon had been a natural father, doting on his daughter from the moment she’d been born. Maya had been his entire world. She hadn’t been the entire world for her mother who preferred to be at St Mungo’s Hospital climbing the ladder in her career.
Maintaining that it wasn’t until the death of her father that Miranda Elliot realised she had a daughter; Maya didn’t have the easiest childhood growing up. She was 9 years old when she’d been taken to her grandparents’ house and left there for hours without being told anything that was happening. When her mother had finally shown up in the middle of the night, her face red and blotchy from dried tears, Maya realised that the parent that wanted her was gone forever.
The next few years until Hogwarts were a struggle. No longer needing to live on the Dragon Ranch in Norway, Maya was pulled from her home and friends, everything she had known, and taken to live in a small two bedroomed cottage in a tiny village in Devon. Miranda tried to be both parents and failed miserably because all Maya wanted was her father to cook for her and tuck her into bed at night. Miranda was rarely there at bedtime. Therefore at the age of 11, Hogwarts came as a relief and Maya was thrilled to leave their new home in Devon for the castle hundreds of miles away.
During her seven years at Hogwarts she excelled, loving school. Her ambition throughout was to become an auror upon leaving. This changed when, during her final summer, Maya met Bug. Artemis Bug was a wizarding butcher who sported some fantastically unique tattoos. He was an older wizard who showed the young Maya Elliot a lot of love and attention. Her attention soon moved away from books and studying to get into the auror force to love, babies and a happily ever after.
Despite having excellent NEWTS, out of school, Maya was reluctant to apply for auror training as it meant less opportunity to see her tattooed and rebellious boyfriend. Instead she took up work as a shop assistant in Diagon Alley until she became pregnant. Miranda Elliot had vanished (presumed dead), so Maya and Bug took up residence in the Devonshire cottage and Maya stopped working. She certainly wasn’t distraught about her mother’s vanishing.
When her mother returned to the country very much alive, Maya refused to move out of the cottage, claiming it was now their family home. Her mother, having always spoiled her, allowed it and all was well until one evening, Maya came home with young Katrine to find all of Bug’s things had vanished along with her tattooed boyfriend.
She’d been distraught.
For all of perhaps a month.
She now had to provide for herself and Katrine.
Describe your job duties and how you go about them: If asked what her job entails, Maya would say “Personal Assistant stuff” means "paid slave stuff". That means whatever her boss (being the Head of the DMLE) requests, within reason. In essence, she does what it isn’t necessary for a HoD to do. She makes drinks, copies letters, sends memos, tracks down people and eases the boss’s ego.
Elaborate on your expertise in your field: Expertise isn’t really needed in such a position. Maya has a brain, as evidenced by her NEWTs. Her name also helped her get the job. Being the daughter of St Mungo’s Esteemed Head Healer and the niece of a former auror and Wizengamot elder made it easy for Maya to prove her credentials and get the job.
Writing Sample: Sum up your character in one paragraph: Maya is a witch who, for her entire life, has been spoilt. Now a change of circumstances has led her to finally wake up and grow up. With a child to look after and provide for, the selfish witch has been forced to get a job and take responsibility.
