[5 November 2010] God save the... [open]

He sipped absentmindedly at his beer as he watched Aidan’s chest rise and fall with each sleeping breath. Jason leaned into the door frame as he waited, making sure the three (and change) year old didn’t wake up for more play time. He talked so much now that Jason occasionally missed the babbles of infants. Still, it was fun to see his son come alive with his environment, even if it meant he was getting into everything.

The desk at work was already littered with little drawings. The fridge in the apartment was a whole different ball game. A day didn’t go by that Aidan wanted one of his masterpieces featured on the magnetic hall-of-fame. Thinking of that, Jason smirked and took another sip. That reminded him...

He walked back out to the kitchen and took down a few of the pieces to make empty space for the next day’s artwork. Jason chose one to keep and threw the rest away. With his bottle now empty, he went to pull another one out, walking slowly out to the living room. His work that he’d brought home was littered across the coffee table. Jason sat down with a huff and picked up one of the reports he had to review.

Budgets were his least favorite things to review. He was good at it, and he almost always managed to come out just under, but that didn’t mean it was fun. Kind of like taxes, and bill paying, it was necessary and unpleasant.

Jason had just popped the top off his beer when he heard a weird noise. Glancing up, he peered over to his discarded wallet and badge. Eyes widened as he set the untouched beer down on the table. Jason pushed himself off the couch and moved over to the spinning and jumping badge; the rattle of it woke him up better than it turning hot, and he’d chosen that as his emergency beacon.

Cursing under his breath, he took a moment to pinch the bridge of his nose. Fiona was out of the country, hence why he had Aidan for longer than usual. Not that he minded, it just made... emergencies harder to juggle. After a moments thought, he pocketed the vibrating badge and moved about the apartment. He pulled on some clothes before picking up favorite toys, crayons, Aidan’s drawing pad, a few snacks and drinks, and stuffing them all into a backpack. Once it was shouldered, he went into the bedroom and stared at his son.

Aidan would be cranky the next day, but Jason didn’t know who else to call upon right then. He’d need to get more reliable babysitters after this. Scooping the little guy up with a blanket, he soothed his son as much as possible. “Shh, shh... no it’s ok, we’re just going to daddy’s work.” The little boy rubbed at his eyes and gave a pitiful little cry. Jason held him close, closed his eyes, and apparated them to the safe place.

When he walked in, he pulled his badge out and put it on. There was chaos in the reception area, people crying and screaming and being silent, different injuries for each person. One man sat there, fuming, purple as someone holding their breath might turn, his face and hands edematous. Next to him sat a woman holding a bucket, vomiting who knew what. The sound turned his stomach just slightly, and Jason stalked through to the lift. Once up on his floor, he slipped into his office, laid his sleeping son down on the little sofa he had, covered him with the blanket, and put a small charm around the little boy. It would alert him if Aidan got up.

Jason fixed a few things up in the office, pulled his extra set of healer robes on, and stalked out to his floor. “What in Merlin’s name happened?”
