  BIOGRAPHY

AISLING  Elizabeth  COOPER
December 20, 1988.  Braemar, Scotland.  Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
OWNER  OF  WYRMWOOD  GROVE  NURSERY
[ 11 ¾”, rosewood, dragon heartstring. Unyielding, with a delicate braid of Celtic knots engraved along the handle. ]

Physical Description

Skinny yet lean, squarely jawed and stubborn-chinned, Aisling often gives the impression of one who has only just grown into herself; she holds herself comfortably – almost like an afterthought – but there’s still a self-deprecating slouch to her shoulders, something painfully earnest about her expressions as if there is much to make up for. Freckled elbows and knees sport old scars—marks of childhood awkwardness, carefree endeavors and muggle parenting.

But if her features appear blunt, then they are offset by a small, wry mouth, a husky laugh, and mirthful eyes.

Aisling has no particular style when it comes to the way she dresses, but if it’s to be summed up in a single word it would be ‘comfortable’. Skirts or trousers, she prefers loose, airy things that give her room to move about. Sometimes she’ll dress up when she feels like it – slip on taller heels, style her hair, use mascara – but those occasions are rare; she is somewhat lazy about appearances. After a childhood spent among trees and dirt, the bare minimum has always been just enough and she sees little reason to change.

Personality

With Aisling, what you see is what you get: a mellow, sensible witch without pretense.

Perceptive, easygoing and candid, Aisling is a good judge of character, yet far from judgmental. She is quick to notice things, like tells and flaws, but loath to criticize—forever optimistic that one might prove her wrong. Everyone is a little weird, and lingering awkwardness from her years as a wee, gawky thing has left her more than aware of her own shortcomings, such as a want for tact.

But even the occasional blunder isn’t enough to snuff out a (mostly) sympathetic nature, and Aisling is not above embarrassing herself to make up for it or admitting her mistake. Preserving her own image at the expense of another’s leaves her feeling uncomfortable and guilty. She has a highly developed if somewhat basic moral code (it leaves a lot of room to haggle with) and a sense of integrity that is harder to compromise.

Myrna was very firm in that respect.

Still, her daughter is a bit of a troll. While an honest lass at heart, a streak of mischief is hard to suppress. Aisling’s eternal fascination with foolish or overemotional behavior has, inevitably, led to innumerable accounts of mockery. Luckily they are usually preceded by good (or at least harmless) intentions, even halted before things go too far; she can be irritating, but generally stops short of being spiteful or catty and lacks a certain self-righteous air.

She has little patience, though, for those who give unsolicited advice, can’t (or won’t) see the truth of their actions past their own noses, or imply that she doesn’t know her own mind; then, they are quickly shut down. Beneath that laidback exterior she is fiercely independent. She might understand where the concern is coming from, but ultimately her business is her own. Attempting to prove otherwise is only tolerated so long before there is mutiny. When it comes right down to it, Aisling does best with those who know when to push and when to give her space.

As far as likes go, she is fairly easy to please. Like her relatives, Aisling enjoys a good drink and thrives in company who are welcoming but do not rely on her for interaction. Outside of pubs and the nursery her interests center around trashy muggle television, funny or exciting films, and rap—the latter from which she takes great pleasure in teaching to her youngest Spectre cousins as their elders look on in bemusement.

Relationships

Chief among her most important relationships are the ones she has with beloved cousins Balfour and Nathaira, good friends such as Leon Faulkner, JJ Bassir and Irina Manning, and her father, David. With them, Aisling reveals a wicked sense of humor and a radiant laugh. Though she is considerably less fortunate when it comes to romance, she does not allow her experiences to embitter her or hold her back, which can be seen in the easy displays of affection present in her current relationship with beau Sylvain Onuris.

History

When Myrna Spectre met David Cooper, she was already pregnant. But as far Aisling is concerned, he’s always been “Dad”—just Dad.

The result of an extramarital affair, the relationship ended before Aisling was born, and once she began to show Myrna decided not to tell her daughter’s father; by then she was already starting her own business – Wyrmwood Grove Nursery – and had met a very kind muggle named David. Before long the nursery was doing well, and with her secretive smiles and his sheepish laughter they fell in love. After two proposals, a well-timed confession at Wyrmwood for David’s benefit (the grass cushioned his fall) and an introduction to Myrna’s strange but welcoming family, Myrna gave birth in Braemar. The couple married in spring.

For little Aisling, childhood was spent with family. When she wasn’t with Myrna at the nursery, she was with David, peering over his desk as he worked, or with other Spectre children, running about the castle with neither aim nor care. She, like many, grew especially fond of her older cousins Nathaira and Balfour, charmed by their obvious charisma and convivial manner. As an only child the prospect – and reality – of siblings would forever be a foreign one until she had her own, but as it were her many cousins were a more than acceptable substitute.

For a time, things were good.

The Second War

But then times grew dark and the Second War arrived, plunging England and its neighbors in chaos. Muggleborns were plucked off the streets. Folks were murdered. Yet it was not Death Eaters or Snatchers who brought grief to the Coopers – and Spectres – but a looter, fueled by notions of opportunity. When Diagon proved too dangerous to stay for a witch with a muggle husband, Myrna returned to Wyrmwood to shut it down until times were safer; she loved the nursery with all her heart and it would be Aisling’s when the time came. But to do so, it had to collapse – a delicate process – and to accomplish that the wards were suspended so as not to interfere.

It had almost finished when the wizard entered. Spying the wand in Myrna’s hand, he struck her with a Stunning spell, sending her flying into the grove before panicking, and fled.

The incident was reported, but until times were safer, the nursery would not be opened. A contract assigned ownership to David until Aisling was older; still grieving over the loss of his wife (the lack of a body was a terrible blow), David would have washed his hands of it. In the end, he left ownership to Myrna’s most trusted worker, Cornelius de Witt. For now, he and Aisling would stay away.

The Spectres were a great support. David was simply grateful they wouldn’t take Aisling from him, but they continued to welcome them both; they were family. Myrna’s death did not change that. Aisling would have her relatives and her father.

Hogwarts

Still, at Hogwarts things were better. With David, Wyrmwood, and the castle out of reach, her mother’s wand was a piece of home. Sorted into Gryffindor, she met children with whom she had much in common—even a dead parent, which helped put things in perspective. She made friends, and they helped ease the ache.

As a student, Aisling’s grades were less than stellar; she had things she cared about (Herbology, Care of Magical Creatures, trashy muggle television) and things she didn’t (everything else), and her overall performance made that clear. She was good at Quidditch, but could have been better if she had cared more. Even Herbology was no exception; lessons were spent throwing dirt at her friends and usually ended with detention.

(She cared only slightly more about boys, although after so many terrible dates she has since accrued a fortune’s worth of anecdotes and begun looking forward to the next one for storytelling value, rather than actual companionship.)

Then seventh year came around, and Aisling returned with new confidence and ambition. At the end of the year she graduated with NEWTs in Herbology, Charms, Care of Magical Creatures, Astronomy and Transfiguration, and went on to take ownership of Wyrmwood Grove.

2008 – Present

At present, life mainly consists of trees, family, and select friends she has bothered to keep in touch with. She lives at Hiraeth Gardens, and spends most of her time at Wyrmwood and Spectre Estate.

Wyrmwood Grove

• Experience:  10 years growing up in, working in, and managing the nursery, OWLs in Herbology, Charms, and Care of Magical Creatures, natural talent.

Located in Diagon Alley, Wyrmwood Grove is an indoor tree nursery started by the late Myrna Spectre. It sells seeds, shrubs, and a few herbs and flowers, but mostly, it sells trees.

Aisling always had a knack for green things, but for the most part her skills are hard won; her earliest memories are of squatting in the dirt, poking at it with a bright yellow trowel and a green floppy sun hat while her mum did the real work. It was only until after her death that Aisling took it more seriously, as a way of feeling close to her once she was gone. Much to Aisling’s relief, she is good at it, and after graduating with NEWTs in Herbology, Charms, and Care of Magical Creatures, she has been taking care of the grove ever since.

As a nursery worker, Aisling’s duties include planting, growing, watering, transplanting, pruning, and generally caring for the plants, shrubs, and trees of the nursery until their purchase. She is responsible for maintaining a strict level of quality and determining the conditions necessary for optimal growth and development. With the help of a few loyal hands, she monitors the whole process from the initial planting to harvest.

As the owner of the Grove, Aisling makes the decisions and has the final say. She decides who they work with, what they sell, and where they get their stock from. Hiring is left to her assistant manager, though not without her approval. Overall, she is an easygoing boss but a hard worker; most of her employees have been around since her mother’s time, watching her grow up, so they enjoy a certain amount of candor when speaking with her. As a result, honest opinions and advice are offered more easily. This isn’t a perfect system, but it nips more problems in the bud than it creates.

Summary

The proud owner of Wyrmwood Grove, Aisling is a mellow, freespirited witch with an earthy sense of humor and a knack for trees, mockery, and trash television. An easygoing lass, there is an approachable air about her that invites others to relax and join in her amusement. Her current goals in life include finding a less shitty boyfriend (maybe) and to teach the clan’s youngest minds how to beatbox.
