[March 28] Breakfast with Mum [Snapshot]

on April 05, 2015, 02:45:16 PM

Coffee had never been part of the Hollingbury household; it was always tea. As much as the Hollingburys prided their connection with Greece, their breakfast was very much British in the end, apart from the occasional Greek cheese. Arcturus bit into his toast as the teapot set itself down onto the table with a porcelain chink. His mother sat down at the table soon after.

"It's been a while since we've had breakfast together," she said as she picked up warm slices from the toast rack. "Ever since you moved out it's been a bit quieter. It's good to know you'd come back once in a while to spend Sundays with us."

"I did disappear off to Hogwarts for seven years, mum." Arcturus dusted crumbs from his fingers. "I know you feel the house is too empty now, especially because Rustle's not here."

"You mean Rustle's not here to steal the cheese."

"Same difference." The young man smirked.

Lydia smiled. "So how's your relationship with your boyfriend of late?"

"It's been going well." Arcturus picked up another slice of toast. "I spend a few nights with him on a weekly basis."

"A few? Your father did not maintain his relationship with me just by seeing me a few nights a week."

"I'm a healer, I have night shifts. I want to spend time with him as much as he does with me." The healer turned red, a little, as he buttered his toast.

Lydia rested her chin on her hand. "So, you two get up to much on these nights, then?" She laughed at her son's face. "Your secret lies safe with me. Thank Circe your father's out working on some early morning paperwork for his deadline. What do you two do?"

"Things people get up to with other people they're in a romantic relationship with!" snapped the healer, well on his way to lobster red. His mother's grin wasn't helping. "Look, it's a whole new thing, let me have my space in discovering exactly what goes on in a relationship, okay?"

"Can we be blamed for expecting a happy announcement soon enough?" Lydia's grin still hadn't faded.

Arcturus gave her an unimpressed look. "I don't want to think about the future for this relationship at the moment. Just...I just want to enjoy it." He looked down to continue his arrangement of cheese on his toast, clearly embarrassed.

"I don't doubt you're enjoying it." She patted him on the shoulder. "He's a lovely man, really. You should invite him over to Sunday breakfast with us a lot more. Once is really not enough, dear. Doesn't matter whether you're going to live with him for the rest of your life or not, your father and I figure that you getting into a romantic relationship after all this time is enough to celebrate."

"Mum."

Lydia laughed. "All right, all right, I'll let you have your breakfast in peace."

Minutes passed. The red faded from his face. Then Lydia leaned forward and spoke in a theatrical whisper, "Need any advice for the bed?"

"I'm eating!"
