    About You, the Writer:

    Your Nickname:
Annie! (I’ve done this before, yes sir.)
Have you read and do you agree to the Code of Conduct?:
Of course! I’d be a bad seed if I didn’t.
How did you find us and decide to write with us?
I found Absit Omen through a large search for a new Harry Potter site, and I thought it was a lot better and simpler than other sites. I was right.
If you have written other characters here, list them all:
    Beatrix Dark.

Full Character Name: Spencer Brendan Bates
Character Birthday & Age: March 17th, 1995, Thirteen years old.
City & Country of Birth:  Oxford, England.
Pureblood, Halfblood or Muggleborn:  Halfblood. Mother’s a witch, father’s a muggle.
House & Year:  Hufflepuff, 3rd year.

Wand:  Springy, smooth surface, unicorn tail core, Hazel.

Physical Description:  Spencer’s height ranges around 5’11”-6’0”. He’s fairly tall for his age and it runs in his family. His features aren’t the most lavishing, he has scruffy, medium-length, hair and he has an oval-shaped face. His cheek bones are rather sharp and he has a tiny bit of freckles on his nose, but it’s not that noticeable. His hair color is a darkish brown, but in the sun it has blonde streaks in it. It can be rather wavy and untamable. Spencer’s eyes are a very light brown, sometimes golden, and are rather small compared to the rest of his face. His nose is a little big, but it doesn’t bother him.

Spencer’s shoulders are broad and he’s fairly muscular, but not so much that he looks older than he really is. The way he holds himself is like how any other thirteen year old would; he sits with a slouch but doesn’t stand with one. He can’t walk in a straight line, which can be bothersome when he walks next to his friends. He has dimples when he smiles, which he does often. Girls have always thought he was cute because of them, but he never really thought so.

Spencer likes to wear the color orange, it’s his favorite color. Whenever it’s the weekend he wears t-shirts (Sometimes he wears a collared shirt over them), jeans, and rugged shoes. He wears his whole school uniform in respect of the school, and he parts his hair in the middle when he’s attending something formal. Other than that, his fringe dangles into his eyes. His mother embarrasses him by trying to brush it out of his face whenever he’s in public, she also calls him her “Cute Snuggle Puppy”, which Spencer secretly likes and never wants her to stop.

    Personality Description:
Spencer’s personality isn’t out of the ordinary. He’s very shy and secretive; he’s been that way since he was little. Spencer hasn’t ever gotten close enough to anyone to be outgoing, and he probably never will. Spencer has never gotten too close to anyone in his life, but he has had a few best friends whom he was willing to open up to. It just took him a while to say it.

Spencer’s emotions range from neutral-happy. He hardly gets depressed, and he’s rarely gotten angry. He’ll get a bit testy if someone is picking at one of his friends or his little sister. If he’s pressured enough, he will speak up about it. Though, it’ll probably be something little like, “Stop pushing me, will you? I’m only one man!” Which is one of Spencer’s many jokes. Spencer cracks jokes randomly in class, and usually gets embarrassed right afterwards. He mainly likes to make fun of how young he is.

Spencer lets little things get to him, like names and such. It’s not that he gets upset; he just doesn’t know what to do. Mainly he just gets a little sad and thinks the person doesn’t like him. It’s hard to say sorry to Spencer because he usually won’t accept it. Unless it’s something little, like if someone bumps into him or steps on his toe. But if someone intentionally tries to hurt him, he won’t let them take it back. He doesn’t hold grudges, even if he never accepts apologies. He does, however, stay a little iffy with the person. You could just say he silently forgives people after a while.

There’s always something that Spencer wants to look up on, but is always too afraid to step foot in the library. He usually has a buddy with him when he’s there since it’s the breeding ground for bullies. Spencer has mediocre grades and he doesn’t mind, nobody’s perfect. But his Father doesn’t like it all too much. He doesn’t like know-it-alls and he doesn’t like it when people point out the obvious. It’s his biggest pet peeve.

Spencer thinks that everyone is good in some way, and thinks that everyone deserves a chance. This usually crumbles beneath him, but he keeps his spirits up. He doesn’t like it when someone tries to bring him down and he isn’t easily influenced by bad people. Unless, that is, they’re incredibly cool. Of course he would look up to them then. That’s when he’s careless and weak-minded. This doesn’t happen too often.

Girls were never really big with Spencer, but he secretly watches them. In a creepy way. Spencer is going through… Changes… And he had started noticing girls quite quickly. He chases skirts like there’s no tomorrow and he doesn’t hide it. He may be shy, but not when it comes to his needs. Of course, there was the occasional slap of the face, but Spencer would just blush and smile. He could always forgives a pretty lady.

    History:
On September 21st, 1994, Briar Greer, a barmaid at a small Inn, met Hayden Bates during his mid-day walk. They hit it off almost immediately and were married a year later. Even though Greer’s parents didn’t like her marrying a muggle, she came clean to Bates and he didn’t care at all. (Though he was in a bit of shock at first, he got over it after a very long hot bath… Away from his fiancé.)

Soon after the couple married, Briar Greer-Bates had become pregnant with her first child, Spencer. After talking it over with Hayden (And convincing him Ashley wasn’t a suitable name for their child) they came to the conclusion that they would name him Spencer Brendan Bates. There weren’t any complications with having Spencer, and he was born a healthy, wizard baby.

When Spencer was born, Briar quickly got pregnant again. He was so adorable and cuddly that she just had to have another child. Another nine months passes and on February 28th, 1997, Penelope Channing Bates was born. Penelope now attends Hogwarts as a Slytherin first year student.

On August 19th, 2001, when Spencer was five, there was a burglary inside the Bates house. Before the burglar could get anything, Hayden Bates hit him in the head with a golf club. It was the most significant event in Spencer’s life, and there wasn’t anything even valuable in his house. This wasn’t traumatic, nor was it important. It’s just emphasis on how boring Spencer’s life was.

That’s not so true, though. On January 14th, 2003, when Spencer was seven, Briar Greer-Bates told Spencer that he’s a wizard. It explained why strange things happened whenever his sister got temperamental or when he had strong feelings. Spencer, at first, was fine with it. But as he reached his eleventh birthday, he began to get excited. On September 1st, 2007, Spencer began Hogwarts school of Witchcraft and Wizardry. He was sorted into Hufflepuff, and he could have never been happier.

Penelope was a surprise to the Bates family (Well, more so the Greer family). Every one of them had been a Gryffindor or a Hufflepuff, not once were they a Slytherin. Penelope had a temper and she liked to show it. Spencer wasn’t very surprised, nor was he concerned. He knows his sister and he knows she’s a stuck-up. A Slytherin sister didn’t seem so bad, anyways.

At the beginning of Spencer’s first year, he had his first girlfriend. She wasn’t a looker, but she was a girl. Their relationship ended after two weeks because Spencer got a little too close to her. And not mentally, either. Spencer was sad at first, but he got over it after seeing that there was way more prettier girls at Hogwarts. This made his ex-girlfriend upset because he’s a cutie, and that he knew she wasn’t worth the pain.

Now, Spencer is at the end of his second year and he’s as happy as ever. He’s still watching girls and still very shy. Spencer doesn’t have any real plans for the future, and isn’t going to worry about it until he’s older. And not as young, naïve, or lustful. Even though that would probably never happen.

How Do You Fit Into Your House?:

Spencer fits into his house because he’s loyal and tolerant. Also, he doesn’t fit into any other houses. He’s very sweet and he values hard work. He just doesn’t… Do it. Spencer knows that he’s very nice and he thinks every Hufflepuff student is also the kindest people. Besides a couple, but Spencer doesn’t mention names. Because he’s loyal.

    Writing Sample:

It was a hot day at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Exams were over and the drama was all gone; everyone just wanted to sit and relax. One of these many students was Spencer Bates. He was shying his way through a crowd of Gryffindors, only to be swallowed up by another crowd of Ravenclaws. He didn’t mind all that much, but it was a little rude. Spencer smiled, politely, as he wedged his way out and down the steps of Hogwarts Castle.

The air was warm and everyone was enjoying their freedom by lounging around the court. Spencer looked around, hesitantly, before spotting a few of his fellow classmates. He recognized them, but never really talked them before. Spencer built up enough courage and sat down next to the Hufflepuffs. His eyes darted back and forth between them to see if they had any objections.

“Hey, Spencer!” One of the boys grinned and waved at him. He thought of their name, quickly, and grinned right back at them.

“Hey, um, Rodney.” Spencer replied, quietly. He wasn’t big on talking, but he tried very hard. He didn’t really notice who was next to Rodney, really, until now. It was a very pretty blonde who Spencer always had his eye on. She smiled, brilliantly, at Spencer, whom blushed in return.

“Hey, umm…” His attention was now drawn to the girl; he was now completely ignoring Rodney. The girl stared at him for a second before realizing what he was asking. “Oh. I’m Jennifer.” She grinned broadly at Spencer. He had the urge to get closer to her, but he stayed where he was. “So… Jennifer… Have you always been so…” He paused, “Hot?” Jennifer gave Spencer a strange look, and he continued: “’Cause… I’d like to have a piece of that.”

With that, Jennifer had slapped Spencer. He placed a hand on his cheek and blushed, wildly. “Don’t be a pig, Spencer! We just met!” She squealed before getting up and stomping away to her friends. “Uh- Wait! Jennifer! I was… Kidding!” He was being serious, but at the same time he knew deep down that he meant it. He would like a piece of that. But Spencer didn’t want to cause any trouble. “S- Sorry…” He said, sadly.

“Nice.” Rodney chuckled at Spencer, whose face went a bright red, “Yeah… Um… Sorry.” He shrugged. Rodney waved it off and grinned, “It’s fine. It just makes me seem like a better choice for a guy.” He then stood up and walked over to console Jennifer. Spencer sighed and continued to sit. He mean to make Jennifer upset, but not only that… Now he was alone again.

Sum up your character in one paragraph:

Spencer is a shy boy who accepts no apologizes. He loves the ladies and likes to watch them in the wrong way. He has self-c0nfidence, but he just doesn’t show it. He likes to stay quiet all the time and is afraid of the Library. Spencer can be influenced easily if he isn’t in his right mind. He’s never been angry, and solemnly gets depressed. He jokes around sometimes, which surprises people. Spencer never gets close enough to anyone to share his secrets, but every once in a while there’s someone he trusts enough to listen to him over time. Spencer is a cutie, and his mom likes to remind him of that.
