Physical Description:

At just over six feet tall, Marco feels comfortable with his height—not wanting to be much taller. His build is rather sinewy—there is not much fat on his bones, but with some lean muscle. He is sturdy, with good posture when he walks. However, he has slouched shoulders when he is sitting down and relaxed. Marco is physically stronger than he looks, owing to his love of heights and climbing things. His hands are gently calloused; his fingernails kept short and clean.

Unlike many of his peers, Marco's skin is clear of most blemishes, though when he gets acne, he is prone to those awful under-the-skin bumps. His jawline is well defined; his cheekbones are high though his face is soft and gentle rather than angular. Marco’s eyebrows are dark and archless, and his hair is pin-straight. His hair is so straight that when short, he barely needs to brush it—it does not tangle easily. Though he does not admit it, his conditioning regimen has left his hair ridiculously soft.

His clothes smell faintly of tobacco—he rolls his own cigarettes and is hopelessly addicted with absolutely no interest in quitting anytime soon, no matter how many house points or detentions he receives. With his oral fixation, he tends to chew on the strings of his hoodies. One would be hard pressed to catch him without a pack of gum and cigarette makings on his person.


Personality Description:

Marco is sometimes a difficult person to be around. He is generally distrustful, and that distrust is amplified when others treat him with kindness or sweetness. He feels that there is an ulterior motive, and if there’s no payment he owes at that moment, it will come eventually. He can be vicious with his words, and very rarely feels apologetic afterwards. He expects others to treat him with the same harshness—and because he can handle it, he expects others to as well. However, this does not mean that Marco is not friendly—he certainly is capable of being polite and flashing a smile. However, warmness and sincerity is granted only to those he has allowed past his walls.

He is a sentimental person, though he hates the fact that he is sentimental, and tries to ignore it. As a result, he also tends to look down on sentimental behavior in others. He finds comfort in physical intimacy—a hand on the shoulder or an arm around his waist, or a hug. However he is not one to initiate such things unless he is feeling particularly lonely or close to that person.
Marco absolutely despises any situation in which he is emotionally vulnerable—as a result he tends to push people away before they get too close. Romantic, emotionally intimate relationships are nearly unheard of, and the few he has had, he has sabotaged. 

He enjoys feeling in control, and sometimes puts himself in reckless or dangerous situations—controlling his mortality gives him a rush that very few things can. He is fond of heights, and is known for climbing up trees or trying to scale the side of the castle. Broken bones used to be quite frequent in his earlier years, though now he has acquired enough strength and dexterity for injuries to be quite rare other than the occasional bump or scrape. He has a fascination with fire, and may be caught literally playing with it from time to time.

Overall, he is an unhappy person who truly doesn't realize that he is unhappy. Marco feels as if he’s leading a good life, and has no reason to feel anything but happy.

History:

Marco Caldara was an unexpected baby—his mother’s pregnancy hadn’t been discovered til she was nearly in the third trimester. His parents rushed to get married, feeling as if they were stuck with a new life together and a heavy responsibility that neither of them wanted. Despite support from both sides of the family, they felt overwhelmed with a child and woefully unprepared. In reality, they never really did feel prepared for parenthood, and to this day, Marco feels as if he is a burden to them.

His childhood had its happy moments—visiting his grandparents and playing with his cousins were all wonderful memories. However, as he got older he realized that his aunts and uncles were much more affectionate to his cousins than his own parents were to him. Hugs and tender words were a rarity in the Caldara household, and he was often affection starved—though if he clung to his mother or father, they shook him off as needy and would ask him to go play outside or with one of his toys.

It was a relief to his parents when he got his acceptance letter to Hogwarts. He was put into Gryffindor, though the hat sincerely considered Hufflepuff as an option. He made friends early on, though when he came back for his third year he began to distance himself. Over the summer, everything had come together for him. His parents were not happy—his mother had the perpetual smell of alcohol on his breath and his father took any excuse he could to be out of the house. The few acts of kindness and gifts given to him always came with some sort of payment, whether it was to listen to his parents whine about each other to him, or whether he was supposed to do some extra work around the house on top of his usual chores. Any resistance or rebellion on his part was met with a “I carried you for nine months and raised you, so you owe me” kind of attitude from his mother and indifference from his father.  He realized his parents went through his things, which was such an invasion of privacy. It made him feel as if they did not trust him, and therefore he could not trust them.

Or rather, he could not trust most people. So he distanced himself from most of his friends, who moved on to other social groups. He still greets them with a small wave or a smile in the hall, but even that lacks the genuineness that it once held in his earlier years. He is not unfriendly, but he is not warm and he is hesitant to open himself up to others.  In school so far, his marks have been erratic—with Ps and Ts one week and Es and Os the next.  He tends to test well, though his homework assignments are often turned in late. Towards the end of his sixth year, his grades stabilized to As and Es depending on the subject. We’ll see if he keeps this up for his final year.

How Do You Fit Into Your House?: Marco has a reckless streak, and has always admired fearlessness, those who live in the moment, and stubborn determination. He may not have all of the qualities of a Gryffindor, but of his values, he has the most in common with Gryffindor values.
