Full Character Name: Charmaine Olivia Donovan
Character Birthday & Age: February 29, 1924. 87 years old.
City & Country of Birth: Born in Godric’s Hollow, but has spent the majority of her life in Cartagena, Columbia.
Blood Purity: Halfblood
Alma Mater: Ledesma School of Magic, on the Caribbean coast of Columbia
Job/Position: Retired old crone (Former professor)
Wand: Dragon heartstring, Silver Lime wood. Rigid and knobby. The wand is kept in her ornate, beautifully carved walking cane.
Physical Description: In her youth, Charlie was quite a beauty. She insists that she has only grown better with age, like fine liquor. She looks rather young for her age, which is not uncommon in witches—muggles do age terribly, don’t they? Charlie has a petite nose, thick eyebrows, and high cheekbones that are so characteristic of the Donovan family. Her full lips are usually curled up in an all knowing smile, and her dark eyes are often full of elderly judgment.
Charlie’s hair, when long, is silver and curly. When short, it is straight and styled to perfection.
She walks with a cane, and has ever since she was twenty two years old, after a duel that went sour and left her with permanent spell damage in her back. Better the back than her mind, she always says—refusing to be coddled or pitied because of it. At 5’3 in height, being hunched over with a cane often makes her look smaller than she actually is. What she lacks in height, she makes up for in personality. As she was born on leap year, when asked for her age she claims she is 21.
Personality Description: No nonsense, curt, and headstrong, Charlie has mastered the art of making up her mind before asking for input from others. Such input is usually responded with, “that’s an interesting thought, dear” before she goes and does whatever it was she planned on doing in the first place. Very few people are worthy of actually having their opinions considered, and those people are usually her favored Donovan granddaughters. Differences in opinions are usually met with a condescending, “oh honey, what sweet dreams you have” or a, “When you grow wiser, you’ll look at this in an entirely different light.”
She is prideful, and was quite offended when her firstborn granddaughter was not named after her. As a result, Rick was. It still isn’t good enough, but she says that she’ll settle for him. After all, it’s not his fault that her son Rhys made such an egregious, offensive mistake. After all, it’s in his nature. The dangly bits between his legs lead to errors in judgment—of course Shona should’ve been a Charmaine!
History: Charlie was born in Godric’s Hollow and raised in Cartagena, Columbia—into a well off, wealthy family. Her father was an immigrant from Britain, her mother a resident of Cartagena. They met, fell in love, got married and had one child. After her birth there was much debate over where they would settle down—her father left his family home as her mother wanted to raise her child close to her family. Charlie will insist that she was by far the most impressive child out of all her cousins, much to their irritation. When she was old enough, she attended Ledesma School of Magic, her mother’s alma mater. Charmaine quickly picked up on Dream Magic and Mind Magics. She was a competitive student, domineering and sometimes difficult to work with. However, her performance in class was excellent—other than having strong opinions paired with a large mouth, she was a model student.
After graduation, she did her fair of travelling, tutoring and teaching dream theories/dream magic. Occlumency and legilimency played a very minor role in some educational scenarios. It was during her travels that she met her husband, a magizoologist and conservationist named Patricio. When they married, she stayed firm with keeping her last name, and after much debate, he took hers. Her travels were not all positive—she did spend some time in the hospital after getting in a duel with a wizard who had disrespected her authority. His spell caused some permanent damage to her back, though that didn’t get in the way of the wedding.
A few years after her marriage and injury, she accepted a job offer at her alma mater to work as a professor of dream magic. During that time, she and Patricio had five children, twelve grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. She taught for fifty seven years. After a long illness, Patricio died and Charlie was left with an empty home, with all her children and most of her grandchildren grown. She decided to retire and move to Godric's Hollow, where her father had left her his family home so long ago. After a series of renters had come and gone, the house was left needing to be fixed up just a bit. After all, she was going to be staying there now, much to Wheezy the house elf’s delight.
Describe your job duties and how you go about them: She is recently retired and very much enjoying it.
Elaborate on your expertise in your field: She scoffs, "Are you implying that I don't deserve retirement after my years of hard work?"
Writing Sample: Sum up your character in one paragraph: Charlie is a fierce, majestic woman who has only become more glorious with age. Some ladies are a mere wine, she is firewhiskey.
