Charms: Rules, Syllabus & Schedule on January 30, 2015, 02:14:38 PM CHARMSUNDER PROFESSOR DONOVANABOUTAs its name suggests, Charms is a core class designed to teach students about charms. Students will be taught how to identify and trace spells based on their linguistic roots, as well as specific wand movements, proper pronunciation, and how to use what they have learned effectively. NEWTs students will also learn to cast nonverbally. For the most part, the spells learned in class are taken from standard textbooks—The Standard Book of Spells, Achievements in Charming, etc. However, this year class will cover more than the usual subjects, as students are introduced to various disciplines and studies within the field. While considered “the softer option” by some, accidents may still happen, so for the safety of not just themselves but everyone around them, students are expected to abide by a code of conduct. Disregard for the rules will be treated as disregard for the class, and punished accordingly. Students who impede their classmates’ education in any way will be punished accordingly. Punctuality, preparation, and participation are also considered integral to maintaining a safe and effective learning environment, so failure to meet these requirements will have their consequences as well. That said, I, Professor Donovan, am not asking for much; just come prepared, be on time, and follow the rules. Behave. Don’t waste my time.Or detention will be the least of your problems. Come to class prepared and on time. To pass, completing classwork is essential.• TARDINESS/ABSENCE. You are allowed (2) unexcused latenesses before I start deducting points from your overall grade. If you are absent or will be, notify me, or I will not accept any late assignments. Nor will I allow you to make up for a test or presentation you might have missed.COURSEWORK. Practice spells before and after their assigned date (see itinerary). Essays (1’ in length) are due when research papers (2-3’) aren’t, and projects should be handed in or presented at the end of term (no extensions). Assignments lose half a grade for every day they are late.• READINGS. Do the readings, because I will know. Don’t, and your classmates can thank you for extra homework or sudden tests.• TUTORING. Students who tutor or go to tutoring may earn extra credit and housepoints.• EXTRA CREDIT. Research a specialization or obscure field of study and hand in a paper on it (4’ minimum). To get credit, you must turn in all requisite assignments. The less you’ve turned in, the less your extra credit submission will be worth.TESTS. Once a week or every other week, unless I suspect that people aren’t reading. They’re usually written, unless I think people aren’t practicing either. • EXAMS. Held at the middle and end of term, and consist of both a written and a practical part.HOUSE POINTSOOC-ly, points will be given for joining in class threads (+2 pts), participating in tutoring sessions (+10 to 20 pts per student) and working on research papers (+10 pts). IC-ly, points will be given or deducted based on class participation, behavior, and whatever else Rick deems fit. So when classes begin, all students are assumed present and on time unless I’m notified otherwise.
