Full Character Name: Macaulay Ezra Nettlebottom
Character Birthday & Age: October 24th, 1992 (17)
City & Country of Birth: Tongwynlais, Wales
Pureblood, Halfblood or Muggleborn: Halfblood
House & Year: Ravenclaw, 7th Year
Wand: Pliable, 11" Oak with Dragon Heartstring core with a knobby shaft.
Physical Description: Build: Like nearly all Nettlebottoms, Mac’s build is lean and willowy. Jokes about his ape-like limbs and the way he was forever tripping over them as a fourth and fifth year. He’s muscular without being bulky, very aerodynamic on a broom.
Height: 6’2” tall, considerable portion of that is found in his legs, which he has been known to painfully bump under various desks and tables.
Hair: Dirty blonde, fashionably long and usually spiked with some potion or other.
Eyes: Unlike many of his Nettlebottom cousins, has hazel/green eyes verses the trademark brilliant blue. Does not mind this because his mother has brilliantly green eyes, also “blue is so ordinary”.
Skin tone / Complexion: Fair skin, prone to breakouts that are usually hidden by potions and cure alls brewed by his eldest sister. He must be very mindful of time in sun as he burns quickly.
Style Influence: Though he would be loathed to admit it, Mac is rather image minded. He likes his robes tailored just
so, but can often be found in muggle apparel as he feels it makes for ease of movement around the garden and in the casting of spells.
Personality Description: As a Ravenclaw and a Scorpio Mac has an innate curiosity and desire to learn. He becomes fixated on subjects, often to his detriment as a younger student. He would spend hours and hours learning everything he could about a particular plant or potion only to neglect his actual studies until the last moment which often left him frantic. It is something he had hammered out a little better with age but he can still get lost in his cauldron and lose all track of the world around him. Moderation does not seem to be a particularly strong word in his vocabulary. He is very much an all or nothing type when it comes to everything he loves. This makes relationships more complicated than they might otherwise be for the seventeen year old, who had really only come into his own sense of self in the last two years (prior to that was constant awkward competition with his elder brother Malachi).
As a middle child his disarming charm is often used to diffuse touchy situations between his younger siblings. He prides himself on brokering peace between his headstrong sisters who are inclined to scrap over any little perceived slight. He is a deeply empathetic seventeen year old (a fact his father and brother often mock) as a child he felt it was an inherent weakness he had to fight but with age has come understanding that the classic definition of “manhood” is inherently flawed and not particularly good for anyone. Despite having accepted this, there is still a deep sense of resentment between he and the other males in his family. He has to work to keep his spiteful streak in check, especially when that final nerve is being frayed and his temper is right up close to the surface.
Though it shouldn’t be it often comes as a shock to people that he’s a bit of a Mama’s boy. It comes from the deeply held belief that in a world of roughly spoken men his mother and sisters were the source of all that was good and sweet in their world. It is from his mother that he gets his true tenderness, the part of himself willing to quietly listen wanting nothing more than to find a way to help. Though he has been accused of having a White-Knight complex, it isn’t actually that he believes women need to be saved. It’s actually quite the opposite. He is acutely aware of how much more men need women than the reverse of that. His adoration for the fairer sex has nothing to do with his own ego, or wanting to add notches to his bed post. He genuinely just loves everything about women..
History: Kelly and Fiona Nettlebottom were married in the spring of 1983, that winter they brought their first child Wallace into the world. In quick succession another son (Hamish) followed, then a daughter (Caleigh), Mac, and his three younger sisters Maisie (15), Lisbeth (13), and then little Edie (11). As large as the family is they are incredibly close knit, and Mac takes special interest and care with his three youngest siblings, though his relationship with his elder brothers can be quite competitive and he finds his father emotionally stunted and distant.
Early Childhood: Macaulay was a very particular little boy, always ready with a charming smile and happy to babble along about any old thing, he obviously preferred the company of his mother than his heavy handed father who worked long thankless hours at the Ministry and felt providing for the family financially was where his duties as a parent ended – save when one of the massive brood needed a dose of discipline. Mac would never suggest that his father was abusive to any of them, but he had an incredibly old fashioned way of looking at the world and wasn’t one to try and emotionally connect with his children. Fiona, on the other hand walked the razor thin line between being a nurturer and mollycoddling her children like a skilled circus performer. Always one to express her affection through stories and food, Mac became enamored with both at a very young age. By the time his eldest siblings had taken off for Hogwarts he was a well-established Mama’s boy (for which his bothers and father
still torment him mercilessly).
The Awkward Turtle Years: Sorted into Ravenclaw (his elder siblings were dispersed throughout the other three houses respectively), coming to Hogwarts was a bit of an adjustment for 11 year old Mac. For the first two years it wasn’t really so bad, everyone was basically in the same boat. They all still had the distinct air of being children, of course then third year happened and it seemed overnight he grew a foot in the legs and arms, and he couldn’t quite seem to get a handle on how to make them work anymore. He constantly tripped over himself and his tongue. It didn’t help that Wallace and Hamish had already been through the terrible pre-teendom and had come out the other side strapping meatheads (according to Mac, tinted with a little bitterness). Even Caleigh seemed to have foregone the struggle and woke up on the other side a bright bubbly knock out. In this time Mac alternated between charming self-deprecation and feeling like a lumbering tortoise completely out of place on land and only marginally better equipped in the water.
Recently: Those were rough years,
really rough years. The thing that has carried him through (besides his love of learning, of course) was the immense joy he found in cooking. Somewhere around the middle of 5th year when everyone else decided to catch up in body mass, Mac was learning to accept his unruly limbs and trying to use them to his advantage – accepting he would never be the hulking mass of muscle his brothers and father were. Now in his seventh year he has settled comfortably in his skin, quieter than before perhaps, valuing the weight of words but never the less on his toes with a quick jab when the moment presents itself.

How Do You Fit Into Your House?: There can be the perception that all Ravenclaws are withdrawn, cold, analytical. People sometimes forget that they’re also dreamers who can exist in a world of pure theory. The one common thread is the hunger for knowledge, and a keen sense of how things work. Mac had always asked “why” and it wasn’t until he found his home with the lofty Eagles he felt he had found his people. His particular fascination currently lies in plants, potions, and the evolving world of food alchemy.
