The circular, cell-like room was bright with all number of strange creatures shimmering with white-blue light. Witches and wizards went about their work with clipboards, quills and parchment, and a multitude of strange devices. Above them hung a great glittering net, tense like a snare.

Gamp stood silently, staring up at it while his hands were clasped behind his back, wand in hand. He felt pride amongst his staff for their achievement that night, and knew that a long night was ahead of them while Hogwarts feasted and young heads slept on their pillows for the last time that academic year.

Hanging in the air, moving from one side to the next, recoiling from the many patroni was the dementor unaccounted for at the funeral in Nottinghamshire that late afternoon. The net had proved useful for once, and was now placed to swallow the dementor again if necessary.

They had a series of experiments to try, from whether they could control dementors with patroni alone, or whether they could appease it with a happy human nearby to feed on every now and then, and whether they could communicate with it.

Mortimer had his own thoughts on what to experiment with - he would rather love to have one of the worst criminals in Azkaban brought to the very room, to be left beside the dementor - not for a kiss - but to find their magical potential torn from them. However, Zephyr was all for protecting the prisoners, so Gamp did not expect any application or request to get past.

He would have to find "willing" volunteers….
